Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | I went to Kaki's gig at the Knitting Factory in NYC last night...what a great show! My friend and I really enjoyed her performance-we'd been trying to catch one for nearly a year or so. Watching her play is amazing, and inspiring!
Her "tapping" stuff is cool, but that's not really what wowed me-and that technique wasn't the majority of her performance. She really commands that instrument with interesting chords, voicings, melodies, and dynamics and I was just really impressed with how she thinks outside the box in her whole approach. Definitely someone to see live.
I've never been one to mess with alternate tunings-heck, it's hard enough for me to remember how to play in standard tuning, so forget having to remember new chord shapes! She effortlessly goes from one tuning to another and utilizes the whole neck/guitar in creative ways. To me, it was like she looked at the guitar without any preconceived notions about how it's "supposed" to be used, but rather as a tool to be manipulated and coarsed in whatever way she needs to create the sound in her head. It also wasn't like she used the alternate tunings as a crutch to make simple things sound complex (as I dare say some popular bands do) -she, as I said, commands her guitar extremely well. She gave a fantastic and impressive performance, and held the audience. Her banter between songs was fun too.
Her whole set wasn't my flavor, the second set was a little more out there for my taste, and she played with a drummer, but I enjoyed the spirit and vibe she was creating, and it certianly still held my attention. My friend enjoyed that part a lot. Decent size audience too. She's got a really great thing going, and I'm really happy for her attaining success with her uniqueness.
I barely had the chance to say hello...but managed to get a quick compliment in as she raced passed me while I stood on line for the unisex bathroom. I kept hearing comments from the women in line "now the men know what it's like to wait in line to pee!"
It's all part of the adventure. I'm glad I went.

I'm not sure, but I think it MIGHT have been for like a dating service. . .
An exterior shot of a toilet stall where this couple have obviously finished "getting it on" in.
The door opens, and the woman comes out, buttoning up her blouse, and straightening her skirt. The caption comes up:
"Fulfilling Men's Fantasies . . . . "
The guy walks out buttoning his pants.
He stops, turns around, takes his foot and puts the seat up.
Add to caption:
" . . . and Women's."
