I have two questions for you. I just purchased a CVT W597 from ebay (in it's last few minutes) but after researching some more the guitar appears to be an SMT 1597. On the phone the owner tells me that it's a special edition CVT and it has Directional carbon pattern because in 2001 they didn't make a Uni-Directional model. Is this true? Did they make a "special addition"? He tells me it cost him $2300.00 new and that's not list. I still plan on recieving ownership of this fine instrument either way but I'd like to know some truth about it too.
Please help me.

The pictures show it's Uni-Directional and owner says that it's not woven although he claims that it's a CVT W597. I agree with you. But I'm still confussed. Need more info.

Have the seller take a picture of the lable on the inside of the guitar. That way you'll know for sure. If he does not take a picture, then it's dubious what it is, and you won't know until you get it. As to the other stuff the seller said, I've never heard of it, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Cliff, I didn't want to be the one to tell you this, but you ARE the adult XXX rated section of this board.

Bentman, post a pic. This sounds like a guitar that was built for the overseas market. If we can see it, we can give you better advice.

I believe this is the auction in question, I was watching it and bid at the beginning. I ended up chickening out when I saw that the description did not seem to jive with the pics and the description looked suspiciously similar to another current auction (like a cut & paste). Add to this the fact that the seller had a history of low dollar book and trinket auctions and the Adamas did not seem like a safe bet. I think I'll use the TAF approach from here on out.

I agree that it's always a bit risky to buy anything from ebay. A women sells those other items. The guitar belonged to her fiance. I didn't send cash so I think my money is safe.

Hi Bentman, that photo is a photo of an SMT top...

..ebay is always a 'buyer-be-ware' consideration, so that particular seller is either ignorant, mistaken, or 'practising to deceive', as they say...DONT send him any payment until you can verify...

Thank you Steve. I've been in the market for an LX and had not been able to find an Adamas new anywhere. In haste I didn't have much time to research this guitar but the guy (on the phone) states that it's in new condition and that it was a special guitar made specifically for Mars Music. Whether it's an SMT or CVT isn't the most important thing, both seem to get rave reviews, it's just that I'd like to know if it's what he says it is. The owner says it's returnable if I'm not satisfied. He sounded honest and my wifes a lawyer. With both things I think I'm safe.

Hi again Bentman, my limited experience says it's a smooth top (SMT) and not a textured top (CMT); if it was a special order made for Mars Music then it may have been a 'customer' special-order and the customer failed to purchase it from Mars...

bentman, when did you talk to the seller?
"... the owner tells me that it's a special edition CVT and it has Directional carbon pattern because in 2001 they didn't make a Uni-Directional model... He tells me it cost him $2300.00" ???

it's a regular SMT 1597. the seller sent me a pix of the factory label. he admitted he made a mistake that it's indeed 1597, not cvt. obviously he gave you bs.

not sending cash won't give u extra protection.
credit card companies don't give you protection or refund for paypal transaction. call your credit card & find out.

btw, the final bid price is kind of high for ebay (from buyer's perspective).

Before you pay for this auction make sure you get the guy's HOME address and phone number in case you have to sue him. Tampa's small claims court is a bit of a drive from Georgia, I think your lawyer would be upset to have to get down there. The Dude says he's honest, and he won't take a picture of the inside label???? OH BOY!

Steve,
What we seem to have here is a possible misunderstanding of terms, though I could easily be wrong.

The term textured is generally used to characterize surface roughness and in this regard I believe the SMT and CVT are both quite smooth and shiny. I think the term that would more appropriately describe the CVT top is a crosshatch pattern indicative of its underlying woven structure. In a-DOM-mus land ;) , textured refers to some specific Adami (not even going to wonder about that declension) that appear to have either a very thin finish applied to the top or no finish applied to the top. Either way, the surface finish is left rough to the touch and somewhat matte in appearance.

I apologize if this is overly explanatory, I'm still reeling from my humiliation (apparently well deserved :o ) at the hands of a GC toad. I expect to recover next week.

Actually, the CVT top can be smooth with no visible indication of the cross weave visible. Just look at a MEWP. I understand CVT and SMT only to refer to how they are made, not their appearance.

I knew I came to the right website. You guys are great. The guitar is on it's way. I should have a better idea what I have once it's here.

Question: When did Adamas start using the cross-weave pattern. And does Adamas make "special" and "custom" order guitars like Ovation does? If so how would you know if it was a special order?

Thanks

hey chatman, that's a great explnantion, one of the few opportunties i have had to learn more about the adamas models...i remember something about there being an audio/acoustic difference between the smooth tops and textured tops, but there are so many models in the history of the adamas guitar i couldn't relate to it all...

I believe the general consensus is that the textured tops are the more desirable ones.

I am sure quite a few here will correct me if I am wrong ;)

I have also been told "go textured."
Don't know if I completely agree. Depends on what you can afford and intended use.

The Adamas 1 & 2 are such fine instruments, both appearance and voice, but the CVT and SMT should not be disparaged...fine quality instruments, usually with newer pre-amps and lower cost.

I have the Millennium (CVT) and an SMT...both great guitars.

Like it? Want to play it? Buy it!

Just talked to Al - he now has a ruby red SMT 6-str (Optima) for sale...mint condition!

I have the same finish - gorgeous, great guitar.
