Location: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida | I am into a custom scale on a used 12 string, 12 fret, neck, from a Pacemaker circa 1975-1980... I spoke to John Bundy today at the mothership and he helped me a lot…
I forgot to ask him about removing the Polyester gloss finish on the neck… Not everywhere… just the places I am doing some work on… Is good old sandpaper the best way to go, or will some type of stripper help ???
Also when it comes to RE-finishing what will stick to the 25 year old Polyester, on this baby, and where do you buy it??? Stew Mac has zip for Polyester, finishes...

Fine lines and pinholes can be filled with cyana-psycho-glue (super glue).
Slightly bigger - there will always be a mark, even if you find a poly coating. All can be leveled and buffed.
I picked up the Stewmac abrasive pads in 2400, 3600, 4000, 8000 and 1200 grit. After that use a car polish or one of the swirl removers mentioned in other posts.
Aircraft Stripper, sold in Auto parts stores takes the Poly down. It does not go without a fight though! Mask off any binding since it eats plastic along with the coating.
Abrasives will take it down - be patient, use control. The top face of the peghead is usually veneer thin. Go with the grain. Mahogany can splinter easily. Did I already mention, be patient? |

Location: NJ | While we're on this topic, I've been pondering the possibility of re-doing the top on my Ultra 12-string. It's my beach/boat/knockaround guitar, so I was thinking of doing a bit of a funky, "nautical" paint job, possibly with some gold leaf . . .
What's involved with removing the rosette??
(I was considering doing the rosette pattern around the soundhole in goldleaf . . )
What grit sandpaper is recommended to remove the finish?? It's black now, and I don't need to take it down to bare wood for any kind of transparent finish - I just wanna have a nice, flat, clean "canvas" to work on . . .
Any advice?? |

Location: NJ | Yeah I know, Woodster . . but if I go with the goldleaf, it's gonna need a protective varnish over it once it's burnished . . . besides, it'll be subjected to a lot of outdoor abuse, so it'll need a degree of permanence/protection . . .

Thanks CW, I figured sandpaper was the way to go...
Now that I started an "ART SHOW", I still need to know, if it's possible to get, the same brand of polyester, that the factory uses ???
