the OFC guitar, the 12 fret slothead, and some of the other great guitars coming out soon.
If I am not careful, when Al takes roll call and wants some money I will be left standing on the sidelines crying in my beer. :( |

I would think anywhere between the current price and another $150 for that guitar would be a sweet deal.
Of course with Al you would get the new owners lifetime warranty. (His winning personality and physic powers come at no additional charge ;) ) |

IMHO, I would think that this would be a good deal if you could get it under $850 to $900, given the highly positive opinion here about the superb sound of this particular model.

. . . it really DOES "sound" the way it "looks" . .
. . . it has a very warm, "reddish-brown" tone to it.

The way this auction is going, it makes Al's price even more attractive for the 2001. You should go to his website or give him a call. |

I can't believe the price, I let them go for significantly less. |

This is no "dress it up to make it purty" PanelMeister.
Solid redwood top that gives it a fantastic sound, very distinctive, and very unlike anything else (soundwise) that Ovation's produced.
One day . . I WILL own one of these! . . |

I think you missed my point.
I said that it was a great sounding guitar but that this particular one sold for more because some people will pay more for it's looks.
Otherwise, why wouldn't they just buy it from Al or someone like Al. As Al said "he sells them for significantly less". |

Does the sound differ between the roundhole and the Elite-style versions of this guitar? Any preferences? |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | I had a round hole 2001 Redwood top that was #2, but sent it back to the factory because the top was defective. At that time, I was told the round hole versions were custom order only. If that is true, there should be very few of them around. Al can confirm this, if it is true. |

Personally they both sounded great but I prefer the look of the epaulets. |

You mentioned that the 2001 Redwood was one of the best sounding ovations out there.
How would you compare it soundwise to the new LTD 2005 12-fret slothead that you played. |

I doubt that the whiff from Tim's causes a desire to smoke a tobacco doobie, dang, I never learned to spell stogie.

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Does the 2001 Collectors have any "aroma" of redwood, out of curiosity? I just got a custom mountain dulcimer that has redwood top and bottom and it has a STRONG aroma of redwood when I take it out of the case. This is a good thing.
Maybe that is why Tim has the urge to smoke the foot-long stogie??? ;)

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | This thread inspired me to take out my 2001 and noodle a bit. No it doesn't smell like redwood... that would be nice tho.. Just like my Robert Burns cigars (which for machine rolled, store bought is a nice smoke).
The 2001 has a unique sound. The Ovation characteristic it carries is the consistant volume and tone for the entire scale. I have the epulet version, although the only difference Al and I were able to determine about the sound between Ep's and soundhole was that the soundhole sounded a little better to the person playing it, and the epulets projected away a little more.
The tone and overall sound of this guitar is closer to that of some of the high-end all wood "box" guitars. Very full range, very balanced without the normal mid-range punch. I'm not sure how this tone/sound would stand up as a lead in a mix, because it doesn't have that mid-punch and crispness that most of the other Ovations have. But as a solo instrument, the tone can only be described as sexy or romantic. I'm sorry, but that's all I can come up with. I used to use the term "smooth" but that really doesn't do it justice. It also has that "unfinished" style neck that I like and feels very comfortable.
I think they stumbled onto something with this model that really sets it apart from most of the other Ovation acoustics I've played. No you can't remotely compare this to a Carbon fiber or almost any other top for that matter. An Adamas sounds like an Adamas, this sounds like a 2001 Redwood Collectors. |
