...however, I think you need the computer screen so you can 'see' what you're doing. And maybe need the computer's hardware to generate the
sound...?
(Why am I answering this, when I haven't got a clue; just an uneducated, but common sense guess?!)

Location: Midland, MI | No, the GuitarPort can not be used sans PeeCee. The whole idea of the GP (sorry, W2!) is that you get a Pod without any of the chips. All the processing is being offloaded to the host system (your PeeCee). The only thing that the physical GP hardware does is act as a line-level amp for the guitar, a conduit to/from the processing being done on the host, and a line-level/headphone amp out. Oh, and it has a big chicken head volume knob.
If you want something to use with headphones and no PeeCee, search on this forum...there was just a thread on this a day or so ago. I think the recommendations (summarized) are Korg PX4, Pocket Rock-it, PocketStudio 5, and some others that I can't remember off the top of my head.
Or, you could get a small practice amp that has a headphone out and kill two birds with one stone. Unfortunately, I'm thinking any of the smallish practice amps are not going to be voiced for an Ovation, but rather a solidbody electric. =( |

Location: Scotland | To do the amp-modelling thing without a computer you need something like a POD, a Behringer V-Amp, a Johnson J-Station, a Digitech Genesis, a Tech21 SansAmp or an old Tom Sholtz Rockman, all of which are good for electric guitar & pretty awful for amplified acoustics. |

Location: NJ | ART (Applied Research Technologies) used to (and I emphasize "USED" to) make an "Acoustic" effects pedal. This is basically the effects pedal that I use on live gigs . . .
It's got GREAT sound, a bunch of really cool "presets", and (with the AC/DC converter) will "boost" your acoustic signal (with "effects") to a pair of headphones . . . |

Location: Las Cruces, NM | My Zoom 505II works great with headphones and it has stereo output, you can crank in anything you want from no effect to full blown Marshall amp, various echoes,compression, etc, and they are cheap.
And once you get a sound you like, you can duplicate it through an amp but it works best if the amp has a stereo input.

I have only used it with my Viper solid body but I see no reason it wouldn't work with an acoustic electric, it has straight through if you don't want effects and has a boost in that configuration, it also has a built in tuner.

Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | i have had a guitar port for over a year. i had hoped they would be building their site faster than they have. it's fun and a decent tool, but not something i use that much. i am tethered to my computer with it. for a good learning and composing tool, check out guitarpro.com i won't even attempt to describe it as i would fall short of giving it all of the credit due. |

I cancelled my guitarportonline account. I downloaded a bunch of tones off the locker, but there really wasn't much 'content' available that was compelling, to me anyway.
Further, I think Line6 missed a huge opportunity by making the forums only available through the GP software. If they were publicly available, users wouldn't have to fire up the GP interface just to read/post and prospective customers would be able to get pre-purchase questions answered. On second thought, maybe that's why they don't make the forums publicly available. |

Native Instruments Guitar Rig may be the next big thing in PC-based amp modelling, especially with the floor controller, which guitarport doesn't have right now, except via MIDI.

Location: Midland, MI | Don't get me wrong, I have no complaint about the GP being tethered to the host PC. I knew that before I bought it. It works just fine when I want to lay down some guitar in Sonar. I bought the PocketStudio for those times when I don't want to be umbilically connected to my laptop, though.
For $99, it *is* fantastic at what it does...model amps, speakers and effects with the ability mod away to your heart's content. My only real complaint about the modelling is that they didn't model an autowah (don't ask).
Now, the customer service and the fact that you have to plug the danged thing in to the computer and then fire up the GP software just to read their forums...that's a complaint. ;) |

paul, i guess what i mean is if i want to use it anywhere but where it is, the computer has to go with it, meaning unplugging lots of stuff and hooking it all up again. maybe a pod would have given me the options i am after. the guitar port cost 165 when i bought mine. i like it and its fun. a lot has to do with my computer being in a u shaped station. so far i dont have a dedicated music computer in a better spot. i wish there was more new stuff on the site. |
