Location: Central Florida | 1980 will always be remembered as the year that began with the world wondering "Who shot JR," and ended with the world wondering why ANYONE would shoot John Lennon. A sad day indeed.

Location: NJ | I remember a couple days afterwards, they had a memorial at Central Park across from the Dakota (the area is now "Strawberry Fields"). It culminated with 5 minutes of silence. I was on the road that day with my wife driving somewhere listening to the coverage of it on WNEW-FM. At the last 5 minutes, instead of broadcasting "dead air", they cut to the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. The Capitol was completely dark and empty. The only inhabitants were jazz pianist David Sanctious, an engineer, a microphone and a grand piano on the stage. Sanctious filled the five minutes with a very emotional and empassioned improvisational piano piece. Throughout the piece he would intermittently weave in and out of the melody of "Across the Universe".
I pulled over and cried like a baby.

Location: Tennessee | I had a similar experience. I tuned into KMEL in San Francisco on the morning of December 9th where a new disc jockey had just started the previous day. His name was Alex Bennett and he had been working in the NYC market for many years before and had interviewed John and Yoko many times in studio. Alex did a walkthrough of John's life and impact, including a lot of audio from Alex's tapes of the sessions. The eulogy culminated in an in-studio session that Alex had taped the previous week before he came to SF. John talked about what a resurgence he felt and how excited he was to be starting his new career in music. It was just heartbreaking; I had a very hard time keeping myself composed as I drove across the Bay Bridge. |

Location: Cherry Hill, NJ | What a very sad day it was. After that, the pieces in the puzzle of life could never fit. How could someone murder him. I was ashamed that this great man who chose to live in the US, was murdered on our streets. JL had so much more to give and deserved so much more in return. His music and lyrics will live forever.

Location: Fayetteville, NC | I remember it like it was yesterday. Sitting at home watching the football game and hearing Howard Cosell make the announcement. I felt like i was dreaming. through the course of the next few days, there were numerous tributes on the air at differnt Radio Stations and of course, TV was covered with the news. The day of the Memorial service, radio Stations wer playing all beatles and lennon tunes, I cried like a baby. |

Location: Tennessee | Not realizing that this sad anniversary was approaching, during a road trip we took this past weekend lady stonebobbo asked me to cull through my iTunes collection and burn a disc of John Lennon tunes relating to his unique expression of love and relationships (a couple of her favorites are “Don’t Let Me Down” and “I’m So Tired” – not bad for a child of the late 70’s!). She likes the way that JL could blur the space between sensuousness and despair, turning one into the other, and still express deep love. So this is what I came up with for her disc which I burned for her on Sunday:
