sorry for my lack of knowlege but how can i alter the set up to suit my playing style?

lower the action by taking the bridge pickup/saddle out and taking out the shims. You can change string gauges, you can scallop the fingerboard, you can take a pocket knife and scallop the braces, you can put peraloid tuner buttons or wood to lighten the headstock.
give us a clue...
