Location: Texas | I know is not even Thanksgiving yet, but the Holiday season is upon us, so I would like some suggestions for your favorite Christmas music.
Mine are, not in any favorite order:
David Grisman - Acoustic Christmas. Great acoustic instrumentals of Christmas classics.
John Denver - Rocky Mountain Christmas. What can I say, I grew up with this album.
John Denver and the Muppets - A Christmas Together. A favorite of my kids and a must have.
Dan Fogelberg - The First Christmas Morning. A great album by Dan, highly recommended.
Lara & Reyes - Navidad. I recorded this album back in 2000 and the concept is of duos with guitars and mandolins of 18 Christmas classics.
Just like having us playing in your living room.
Serge

I also like A Very Special Christmas, Vol. II ... especially the Pretenders version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". I'm still in love with Chrissie Hynde. Mellencamp's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is also very good.
I picked up a disc called "It's Snowing All Over the World" from World Market a few years back that is really great.
And this is not a CD, rather a vinyl LP ... but an all time favorite ... "Christmas with the Chipmunks". It includes all the great ones, plus ... a jazzy rap version of "The Night Before Christmas" by David Seville in his own voice. It's everything William Shatner can't be. |

I have never bought a Christmas album, I just listen to what's being played all over the place. Sergio's "Lara and Reyes" sounds like someting I might buy though, I'll see if I can find it, anything mandolin is my bag.
Paul T
Any thing by Dan Hicks is my favorite, they need more exposure.

Seriously, nobody mentioned Johnny Mathis? He is the voice of Christmas, isn't he? :) My wife has the Very Special Christmas albums (I and II) and there actually are some pretty good renditions on there. I'm more of a traditionalist, though...Frank Sinatra, Mannheim Steamroller (although the last couple of years they've been way over played on the commercial stations around here), that kind of thing.
Now, for klezmer music... |

Location: SoCal | Glen Campbell did a Xmas cd about 5-6 years ago that was considered a bit of a throw away cd, but it's one of the best Xmas cd's I've ever heard. He's on the cover with a full body Ovation classical that he puts to good use on almost every tune, taking long solos. My favorite tune is the jazz verison of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.
Usually, you find this cd at Target for $10. Well worth the money. |

Location: NJ | One of the very early (it might be the second one) Windham Hill "Solstice" albums has a track of Michael Hedges playing "Bach's Cello Concerto" on a Dyer harp-guitar. In one passage, he plays this descending bass line that, just when you think it CAN'T possibly go any lower . . . he hits this note that'll just turn even the best speaker cone to an elephant phart . . . .
It's almost inconceiveable that a note like that can come out of an acoustic guitar.
The series of albums are a BIT "NewAge-y", but they ARE a bit of a departure from the usual "Jingle-Jingle" or "Holy/Holy" faire . . . |
