Sound "Ports"

Duncan J Posted 2004-11-17 11:45 AM (#173037) Subject: Sound "Ports" Joined: May 2004 Posts: 295 Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada I've noticed some acoustic guitar makers are making models with sound holes (what they're calling sound "ports") in the sides. One even makes a model with a sliding door to close the "port." Does anyone have any experience playing one of these? I imagine it would project a lot more sound in the direction of the guitarist, but I wonder if it would affect the sound projecting to the audience. On a purely aesthetic level, I can't say I'm crazy about the look of them; maybe it's just the newness of the concept. I played a Manzer archtop that she built for Scott Chinery that had a door on the top for a sound port. It was the first I ever saw of it and thought it was rather interesting. The player got to hear the sound but it does effect the forward projection of the guitar.
