This is NOT meant to become a political post, but I will certainly understand if it gets pulled.
I just want to encourage all of us to exercise the right that has just been given to the Afghans, and hopefully will soon be given to the Iraqis, to choose our "public servants" on so many levels, and to also vote on local initiatives (here in Nebraska there are several gambling initiatives on the ballot).
There are young men and women overseas right now risking their lives to protect us, our right to vote, and trying to make the world a safer, freer place. Let's not slight their service with apathy.
(If you don't live in the USA, please forgive this somewhat "local" post topic.)

I hope I'm not rejected like last time. The poll people said that they had no record of me voting in Illinois even though I've voted here all of my life. This time they will NOT get away with it. I have my voter card, my application for a voter's card, and the knowledge that I can still vote with a special ballot even if it is later rejected.
Get out and VOTE! IMHO it isn't a right, it is a duty! |

But whether people here agree with me or not on the issues, it's a pretty bright group of people. I hope everybody here does get out and vote. |

Please make yourself aware of the issues & the candidates positions on them, THEN vote!
We vote by mail in Oregon. I sent in my ballot last week.

My wife and I voted early a couple days ago. Voting is a great privilege and a greater obligation if democracy is going to prevail. Having some knowledge of why you are voting seems worthwhile, on this board I have no doubt that all of us know exactly why we vote as we do.
Please do not tell me anymore about why, I need a vacation from the political campaigns.

It's quite different in Australia, we're one of the few countries where voting is compulsory so all the talk about voter turnout and registering voters in a little strange.
I know it's a cliffhanger but I hope for the sake the the American people that one of the candidates is a clear winner. |

I know you'll all do the right thing, and vote for Kerry! ;) (Uh-oh, hope I haven't started something; you OFCers are so hot-blooded!) |

He also has the ability to see all sides of an issue (since he's come down on all sides at various times).
Not. |

Remember that all republicans vote today and Democrats vote tomorrow!
On a more serious note we've had early voting in Florida and it's a wonderful thing. We went last week and haven't had to watch the TV since then. I really am getting sick of all the PolitiSPOO being spread.
I also want to clarify that the early voting in Florida was not so that all the recounts could be completed by midnight tonight. That just isn't true, more politispoo from the Massachusetts I'm afraid. |

Your first point (first post) is well taken; if you don't understand the issue or the candidates, please, don't vote in your ignorance and screw up the results! ...but I didn't want to include that in my first post and get "preachy."
Your second post (in response to a nice try by our Canadian brother to cast a vote for Kerry) may well plummet this post into the place I was afraid it would eventually go...
 |

On another note altogether, I just came in from taking my youngest to school, sat down in front of the computer and realized that I had the wrong glasses on for the computer. I've got three pairs of glasses. Bifocals for out and about (or for those in Canada "Out and aboot"), my old reading glasses which are perfect for the computer, and my new reading glasses which are for, well, reading.
Anybody else dealing with this kind of crap? |

I'm in the same boat, but I opted for tri-focals. They took about a week to get used to, but now I can focus on the computer/desktop, but, more importantly, I can see the audience, the music book and the fretboard... all without changing glasses.... hmmm, now where'd I put my teeth... |

Location: Toronto | Hey Paul - I just got my first set of bifocals on Saturday... About all I can use them for is watching tv and reading the newspaper and only if I'm planning on doing that at the same time!!
Can't get use to them - now I got distance glasses, distance sun glasses, bifocals and now I will pick-up a pair of reading glasses...
Hell - the problem with getting old is that we have a whole lot more to carry around!!
Good luck today y'all - it seems that folks here are more interested in your election then we are in our own...

We got personal calls from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson regarding voting propositions, and it was like they refused to listen to what we had to say. They just said what they wanted and hung up. How rude. You know, if they take the time to make a personal phone call, you'd think they'd stop and visit for a while.
Maybe they were just too busy, making all these calls. |

Location: Upper Left USA | For what it’s worth I would like to share my voting strategy. Please feel free to take from it all you need to make your life more complete. Or just find an interesting post.
Absentee Ballots are the way to go. Since you all need a place to put your guitars you probably have an address and a mailbox.
Start a separate box for all of the political ads you will undoubtedly find in said mailbox.
At a time of your choosing sit down with your Voter’s guide, pile of solicitations and cup of coffee (substitutes allowed).
If you really like what someone’s been doing give them 50 points. If they pissed you off, take 50 points.
If their picture in the pamphlet is either missing or they had their Wife take it – take away 10 pts.
If their ads don’t say what they did right – just why the other person is wrong – take away 15 pts.
If they called you during your Dinner with a “Personal Message” – take away 20 pts.
If they were a previous Radio/TV/Talk show host – take away 20 pts.
If they were ever in a movie – AFTER – 1970, take away 20 pts.
If they were in a movie – BEFORE – 1970, consider them.
If they were ever a member of the WWF – consider them!
If you just don't know - vote for the women. Unless they remind you of Bella Abzug or Hilary!
And remember, if you don’t vote – you can’t snivel!! |

Paul, I've found that I need the magnifiers 1.75 for doing work on guitars these days, filing nuts and all the soldier work. Just can't see them little things anymore. Hate that! |

I have my favorite candidate, but I also am optimistic about the future of our country. The first election that I can remember was Dwight & Adlai in the early 50's. Always dire predictions about who wins. Yet, the USA just keeps on going. The real greatness of this country depends on it's PEOPLE!
About the eyeglass thing, I went the no-line route this last time, focus from up close to way out there. Takes a bit of getting used to, but worth it. I am probably a little older than most of you and have gone from the magnifier for computer work, and bifocals for other things. Also, have finally got to the point of just wearing them all the time.

As for glasses, I've have those bifunckles without a line for 10 years. I was lucky & I caught onto them really quick so I can get along pretty well with just one pair of cheaters.
Don't need to see much to play a guitar so as long as I can focus fairly clearly on my front sight I'm in 'em....

If you are upset about the election, why not be upset with the Demo party...they fielded a poor candidate and attempted to spin him into something he isn't. Nothing wrong with opinions, if based on facts and not emotions. Democrats are trying to figure out what went wrong - first recommendations I would make would be to replace the Chair of the DNC and stop trying to maintain their block voters by fear. Terry McAuliffe, DNC Chair, attempted to win based on spin to create anti-Bush voters. Spin/lies/divisiveness, not substance.
Now, let's get back to guitars. |

Speaking of that, I am so glad that I don't have to see the Dixie Chick, REM, Jon Bob Jovi, and the rest of those idiots doing their little anti-Bush concert. When o when will these people realize that no one give a flying ^#*& what they think. Just take out your instruments and sing your songs. Keep singing, because when you speak you do one thing really well. You show the world how CLUELESS you really are! |

We are fortunate to live in a country where we can be exposed to all points of view ... it is this that makes us a great country. No one person can make us good or bad ... it is our collective voices that tell the world who we are. It would be a disaster if we leaned too far to the left just as much as it would be a disaster if we leaned too far to the right. For me, the key thing that makes the US so special is that the Constitution is there to protect the rights of the one, so that I am not trampled by the many. Forget about which side anyone is on ... listen to the bit of truth in the other side's position and work to integrate it into one's own position. But never be cowed into not standing by (or stating) your own firmly-held beliefs, whatever they may be. |

I hope you were being sarcastic with that statement...I've never seen a gun - or a car - kill anyone of it's own volition; a human being with a will had to be involved. |
