Location: New Orleans | Hello. I am a new member and a proud owner of a mint '91 Elite 5858 Flamed Walnut 12-string. It is truly a wonderful guitar. This is my first Ovation and I have a question for the list. Is there a secret to removing the saddle to lower the action a bit? It appears there are two buttons, one on either end of the saddle, but I cannot see how to get the saddle out. Help is appreciated. Lewis in New Orleans.

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | Hello Lewis, I am in Lafayette. You can take the pickup out to remove a shim under the pickup. On either side of the pickup are back pegs that you remove to get the pickup out. Just pull the pegs up and the pickup should come out. Under the whole pickup assembly are shims that can be taken out to lower the action. There should be at least two of them there. Welcome! |

Location: SoCal | Take off the back access plate. You'll see a cable coming from the bridge. With the strings off or loosened a lot, very gently, push up on this. The saddle should come up and out. |

Welcome, love New Orleans and all of Louisiana having spent time there in 1955 on an airmobil exercise with Army special forces choppers.

Moody is correct. The bridge pins are best removed by finding them from underneath, inside the body. That guitar is 13 years old, and if the bridge pins have never been removed they may take a bit of wiggling and cajoling to get them to pop up. They can break, so take your time. In the worst case scenario, use a small pliers and pull them from the top. That will score the plastic surface, however. Replacement bridge pins can easily be obtained from Ovation customer service.
How does that guitar sound? I just sold a 5858 six-string, and it was sweet. |
