| Hi-
I need to remove the Op-30 receptacle from my Ovation so I can see if the wires are loose. I can't see enough through the soundhole. I see what looks like a mini-plug, then an empty hole, then another wire. The wires on the jack end of the cable are intact, but I'm not getting any connection.
I loosened the 2 screws after removing the battery/vol/eq part, and it comes out an 1/8 inch or so, but there's something else holding it in place. I can't find anything on the Ovation site. Can anyone tell me how to do this or point me to additional information?

I've neever had to remove mine. But i believe the question has been asked befor ehere some time back. If you don't get a response quick enough to satisfy your curiosity. Try Contacting Kim Keller at Ovation Customer Service either he or someone else from there could walk you through it.

Location: The Shop | You need to keep unscrewing the screws so the feet that hold it in relase their grip on the body.Dont worry about losing anything,you will notice that the can will loosen up enough to remove.When you put it back in,just tighten until it is back in place. |

Location: Houston, Texas | The two screws thread into little wings that rotate out to catch the edge of the hole in the bowl to hold the can in place when tightened. When loosened enough, the wings will fold in against the sides of the can to allow it to be removed. You may need to maneuver the guitar to allow gravity to help hold one wing or the other in against the side of the can when you attempt to remove it, but you need to make sure that you have loosed the screws enough to allow the wings to fold all the way in. :cool:

That was it, thanks! (man, those are long screws!).
There's a mini-plug connected and a mini-mini-plug connected, and that's it. There's a hole between those, and a 5-pin connector with nothing attached. There don't appear to be any loose wires inside.
I know this is a long shot, but can anyone tell me if the above sounds normal? esp. the connector with nothing connected. I'm trying to avoid taking or sending it somewhere for repair.
The problem is I get absolutely no connected sound. I know my cable's good, and the jack connects firmly.

Yes, that is the same situation on my OP-30 and is normal. Make sure that the red battery led comes on briefly when you plug your cable in and that the preamp is not in tuner mode (which mutes the output). Other than that the easiest way to check it would be to take it to a guitar shop and see if they will let you quickly plug in a known good OP-30. If it fails to work I would suspect the piezo pickup.

| Hi all-
I was distracted for a few days, but I got back to this wanted to let you know all is well now, thanks to you folks! :)
It was a combination of a weak battery and a poor jack connection. I didn't realize that the battery is always in use when the jack is engaged (is that even true?). I had changed the battery when I first heard all the static, but since it didn't go away I thought it was the jack. The battery was probably running down for awhile after that, but since I didn't see a light I sort of forgot about it. As you can tell, I'm not used to a guitar that needs a battery, having only had electrics and acoustics before!
The jack was loose, and when I tried to tighten it it fell through the body hole, which is what started this whole todo.
Anyway, I adjusted the tangs a bit, tightened everything up and changed the battery & it's fine now.
Back to the battery: what's the average life expectancy, and do you get any kind of warning when it's running low? And pls confirm if you will that the plug in to the guitar is what completes the circuit, so any time that plug is in the battery is in use, even though the light isn't on?
Probably dumb questions, and I'll check the manual again, but I figured I'd ask while I'm here!

Location: So. Cal. | Generally, the power is turned on only when the jack is connected. I have removed the batteries in most of the guitars that I do not normally take to gigs. I also make sure the cable is disconnected when the guitar is not in use (at home or during breaks in a gig).
The Optima does have a low battery indicator. The Op24 also has a check battery button. |

Plugging in turns on the pre-amp & an indicator light will blink on & then off when you plug in to show that the battery is good. It will stay off even though the pre-amp is powered up.
I can't say exactly how long a battery will last, but they last a remarkably long time in my OP40's as long as I unplug when not in use. I'm guessing here, but I would say a battery should last at least 30-40 hours of actual plugged in time. Probably more than that. When the battery begins to get low the light that blinks on when you plug in will begin to blink continuously. At that point it's still good for several hours.

| Hi-
I'm still having problems. I'll call Ovation again but thought I'd post here as well.
The new battery is already lit all the time it's plugged in, even though it's only a few days old and I've been unplugging it when I'm not playing. If that signals that the battery's low, I don't understand how it can be already. The light is supposed to go out after coming on briefly when it's first plugged in, at least as I read the manual.
Does anyone have a clue why this might be happening? I can try another battery, but there must be something else going on.

Location: Upper Left USA | Definately try another battery since that is the cheapest solution. Give a good visual to all of the wires, plugs and connectors. Something may have crossed and shorted.
The answer is always simple - finding it can be frustrating. |

Location: NJ | You also may wanna try taking a skinny little emery board and just "scuff up" the metal contacts that connect with the battery posts. There may be some sort of build-up or oxidation on 'em that's hindering the pre from getting the full voltage, so the preamp thinks the battery is dead/weak . . |

And KUDOS to Ovation's Customer Support! I just spoke to Kim Keller and he's going to send me a new jack assembly. If that doesn't work he thinks it might be the pre-amp. I'll try another battery and check the contacts in the meantime.
