check this one out and see how an innocent potential Ovation buyer's question has turned into a schizophrenical discussion.
Enjoy it. http://www.acousticguitar.com/ubbcgi/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Gear |

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada | Whew!...all the "salad bowl" clichés sure came out of the woodwork (or should I say plasticwork) on that thread.
There will always be types who build themselves up by cutting others down. There were some on that thread who simply stated that they didn't go for the sound of Ovations, and there's nothing wrong with that. But those "salad bowl" and "bedpan" comments are just plain snobbish and immature, and reveal nothing but their speakers' closed-minded attitude.
I used to play "real" drums. Do I have anything against electronic drum kits? Not at all. I find them rather fascinating, and wish I had the money to buy 'em and, more importantly, space in my condo to set 'em up; I'd probably get back into drumming. |

A lot (not all, but most) were made by one person using various psuedonyms . . .
It's happened before there . . . as it has here.
That's all I'm gonna say about that . . . . |

Click on the link then use the scroll to go to gear.. the topic is your Toughts on Ovations.
I read the posts. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I honestly think they gota bit abusive in several places. And what the said to Cliff is uncalled for. their have been some heated discussions and opinions expressed on this board, but to my knowledge no one has ever been treated the way these guys are treating others.
Lets Caul Chuck Norris to kick their ass into shape! :D
I know, it probably wouldn't work, but i just had to make myself smile thinking about it. |

The "Playing Guitar" section is alright, but that "Gear" forum is a sad, sad, place. |

| Hello. I pointed out on that site that most of the negatives are from one guy using a bunch of names. I listed most of the names and the starting dates in a post to demonstrate the point. There's a good long post from Teja on there that states some good points. There are jerks everywhere, but the majority of folks over there are just fine. The last 5 or 6 posts are pretty positive, believe it or not. |

Location: Central Oregon | Hmm. I went & read the thread. I would have probably though it was funnier before all the editing went on. That one goofball seemed to think of the OFC as a bunch of terrorists & our lovable fuzzball Cliff was some sort of bogeyman ringleader. Very humorous stuff. It appears that the nuts were eventually put back in their respective trees by the management & the last half dozen posts were all reasonable.
However I still don't see any reason to go back there.
Sort of on-topic:
I went over to play with my buddy Dean last night. Instead of his old Country Western Gibson that he usually plays he was playing his (nearly new) $1,800 Tak. (Pretty guitar, lots of MOP & a nice flying eagle inlay around part of the soundhole, sounds nice, plays well.) I took over my freshly set up 2002 Collectors. He was surprised that I had it back already. He was also impressed with the work done & the personal service. (I got two coast to coast calls from Kim during the three business days it was actually there.)
Anyway, Dean told me he had plugged in his Tak before I got there & it was dead. Nuttin' from the amp. He had forgotten to turn off the pre-amp the last time he'd played it.
I was a little surprised. I told him all my Ovations had pre-amps that turned on when I plug 'em in & turn off when I unplug 'em, I thought all guitars with pre-amps were that way, all of mine are. It was kinda' funny, he had no idea that I didn't have to manually 'turn on' my pre-amp when I plugged in, I had no idea that he did. He said something to the effect of "I wonder why these aren't made that way?"
I showed him how the buttons on my OP40 worked & the notch filter. He really hadn't paid much attention to it until last night. He knew it had a built in tuner but had never heard of a mid shift or pre-shape or a notch filter so I showed him how they worked. He was impressed. His Tak only has the tuner & four sliders for vol/tone. Oh yeah, & a button to turn it on & off :)
He also told me he can't turn up his amp very much or both his Gibson (w/aftermarket in-hole pup) & the Tak would feed back badly.
I saw no reason to point out that he had paid over a thousand dollars more for the Tak than I had for my like-new 2002, he already knows that, heheh.
He's really starting to warm up to my O's. Maybe he'll take my advice & try one of the Ovations with the wider neck, he's always complaining that the strings are too close together on his guitars.

Location: 6 String Ranch | In the end the Ovations just work better in their natural environment (on stage) than any others. Those pretty wooden ones are great for the living room but to plug it in and make the guy in the 20th row happy, you need something that was built to do that. |

That is true, but my Elite still sounded better, acoustically and to my ear, than many of the GibsonMartinTaylor's that I compared it to. I don't know if it was acoustics in the store's 'acoustic room' or something else, but I was not an Ovation afficianado when I started on this path. I have yet to find a wood box with the balanced tone and volume I get out of my Ovation.
And besides, the engineering behind the bowl appeals to my mechanical side...it's just danged cool. |

If by chance you're unsuccessful in making a "convert' out of Dean and he wants to stay with the Tak, turn him on to one of those big, FeedbackBuster plugs. They work really well with boxy acoustics at high volume. |

Location: Central Oregon | Thanks Cliff, have you got a link to one? I'm unfamiliar with them. Nothing came up when I searched for FeedbackBuster.
Off topic-- I just returned from the airport. Sent off the wife to Vegas for four days & nights at the Flamingo with her sister, sis in law & (grown) niece. I told her that if she see's a guy carrying an Ovation case to say hello to Cruster.

Tony explained what you were talking about. I was thinking of something electrical for some reason. Maybe because I've never actually seen one of the hole plug deals it didn't click. More likely because I'm feebleminded, as has been pointed out to me lately.
At any rate they won't work for Dean. His old Gibson has the pup mounted in the sound hole, & the Tak has an oddly shaped hole because of the flying eagle inlay around a portion of it. It's almost round, but not quite. I guess we could Red Green some duct tape over the holes, that might work. :)
Thanks for the suggestion though,
