I have been listening to a bunch of Dave Mason songs that were recorded from 1975-1985. I know he used several Ovation guitars during that period and was particularly fond of a few of the 12 strings. Can anyone identify which models he was using at that time?

The 12 string is particularly prominent on his Mariposa De Oro album. I heard he stopped using them because he was all about getting paid and being given free guitars.

I saw him live once and he played a model 1615. Not sure if that's what he recorded with or not.

Which musician isn't all about getting paid?

I saw a "behind the annoyance" or whatever that show is, and noticed as soon as he reached a point in his career where he didn't have to buy his own guitars, he stopped playing Ovation. He was pretty much exclusively Ovation up till that point, or so it seemed.

He used 1615s and many were in open E tuning. He probably got some for free and paid for the rest. After Ovation he went to alverez? I remember seeing the ads and then who knows what. He also went down hill around the same time. Great album that golden butterfly.

Yeah,

English Player, it's great to be paid, but it's a greater thing to just to play and enjoy the work - enjoy the instrument in hand, the crowd - even all the hours that go in to putting a performance together. If it were just "all about getting paid..." I'd find something else to do with my time.

I don't know if he left Traffic or if the rest of them "left" him out.

Saw him a couple of years ago, great show, his guitar work impressed me greatly. Why he did
"Dear Mr. Fantasy" I don't know. That was a Stevie Winwood tune. No Ovations on stage though.

I always liked his "It's like You Never Left" album . . .
Saw him once in the late 70's at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. Solo acoustic. Was opening for Renaissance. Was very good.
Last year, I was skimming through a CD store and saw a live album of his that had him playing what looked like a Pacemaker on the cover ("Live at the Cow Palace(?)"). CD was absolutely abysmal. I scanned the cover into my "Ovation" folder and took the CD back for a refund . . .
