| I am in the process of getting a new custom 12 string made for me. Should I get the XLR Jack put into it or not? I pretty much just do home recording stuff. Would I ever even need this thing? Has anyone out there ever used this feaure? If so let me know...... Randy |

Location: Central Oregon | I've never had a guitar with an XLR, but I've read about 'em in here. If you're doing any recording at all, my guess is it would be a handy option. If I had the scratch to order a custom made 12 string I sure wouldn't skimp on an option to save a few bucks. Besides, I don't see how it can hurt anything even if you never use it.
Bear in mind, I have no first hand knowledge on these.

Location: Scotland | The advantage with the XLR output is that it eliminates the need for a direct-box so you can go into mic-level balanced inputs. This makes for a cleaner, stronger signal. It also allows the pre to operate from phantom power. Anyone who has had a battery die in the middle of a show will appreciate the phantom option. As far as recording goes you'd be better off investing in some good microphones. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | My CL 12str is my main guitar. I plug in every week with several sound people rotating week after week. Invariably,as we go through the sound check, the sound person will look up at me and say..."WOW, that guitar is HOT!" XLR DOES make a big difference when you plug in. Phantom pwr is a nice bonus, too. If you're having a serious guitar made, this is the time to put it in. IMHO. John <>{ |

Location: Netherlands | Paul: I prefer the XLR sound over the XLR + mics or mics alone sound. Maybe i'm a bit weird, but i like the mellow sound the piezo gives without the overtones. Tried both, with good AKG's, but it just couldn't convince me.
Anyway: I agree having XLR out saves a lot of trouble, provided there is phantom power around. I prefer it over the regular jacks. There's another advantage when playing live, it's the 'safety-click' which keeps you from pulling the plug while stepping on your cables. (I'm a bit clumsy sometimes).

Depends on the guitar you are having made. No idea on what it would cost you but if the similar model (CL, Adamas) has one, I would recommend if you are ever going to sell. Don't think it would add value but it may be a reason that someone later doesn't buy it. |

If you're going through the expense of a custom-build, why not go for accoutrements.
You'll use it eventually.

I believe it makes a great deal of difference in the sound. I believe it is a MKGT. point that the "Mother Ship" should push when one guitar has it and another doesn't.
It will be your "only" hook up once you try it.
