Location: Vernon, CT | Thought I'd throw this out to the OFC team. What are the top ten Rock guitarists of all time living and/or dead? Keith Richards would probably fit into both categories but he's not in my top ten. Here's my selection in no necessary order: 1) Jimi Hendrix, 2) Jimmy Page, 3) Eric Clapton, 4) David Gilmour, 5) George Harrison, 6) Eddie Van Halen, 7) Stevie Rae Vaughn, 8) Peter Townsend, 9) Brian Setzer and 10) Chuck Berry.
I'm sure there are some differences of opinion but these are the one's I've taht I like the most.
Play On!

Newest to my list would be William Russell, the guy that played "America the Beautiful".
Sorry about not listing 10, but I'll be interested in what the others have to say.

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada | Making music-related top-ten lists is a minefield these days. Back at the dawn of time, when I was young, there was rock, folk, blues, jazz, and classical, and that was pretty much it. Now we have (meaningless?) categories like best new shred-metal-hiphop-thrash-medieval-fusion-blues band.
This thread is about top-ten "rock" guitarists, but I see names like Glen Campbell and Chet Atkins? Even Clapton: would he call himself a rock guitarist, or would he claim that's a bygone (Cream) era, and that he's really primarily a blues guitarist. Stevie Ray Vaughan: rock or blues? In the thread about bass players: are Jaco and Stanley Clark rock bassists, or fusion, or jazz? Tough to categorize things in this increasingly fractured world of music. |

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | Joining Keith in the "or both" catagory, I'm thinkin that Joe Perry is running a close second. Though I wouldn't put him in my top ten, he definitely used to be one of the coolest guitar dudes in the early days of aerosmith. However, I just saw him on the cover of one of the new guitar magazines, and it looks as though his former lifestyle has caught up with him. He's could easily pass for Keith's slightly younger brother. Come to think of it, Steve Howe is lookin quite different these days too. Years of touring does wonders for the body, I guess. |

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | It amazes me that so many have mentioned Gary Moore. Since he went blues in the early 90's, I've really dug his stuff. But many guitar players I talk with don't even know who he is. In fact, I don't know anyone, other than you guys, who are fans. Pretty cool.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | - Don "Buck Dharma" Roeser
- Randy Rhodes
- Slash (I didn't used to think so... but the "rock guitarst category is getting thin).
- Eddie Van Halen (also, doesn't do much for me, but does/did a lot for Rock'n Roll)
- Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) Not the greatest musician on the planet, but definately one of the great guitarsts on the rock scene.
- Bitchy Blackmore (pun intended)
- Steve Vai
I guess this begs the question "What is a rock guitarist?" Is it just musicianship, influence on the genre, attitude? A couple of great rock musicians who aren't normally sited for rock'n roll are Prince and Zappa. Even Roy Clarke used to "shred" long before it had a name.
Like lists?

Top ten. At what? Virtuosity? Technical expertise? Creative improvization? Best at making money? Influence on music? What type of music? You get the idea.
Some favorites are Chet and Les, Mark Knopfler, Chuck, BB, Phil Keaggy, Steve Howe is very gifted, Carlos, Frank Zappa, EC has made a name for himself, Wes Montgomery, Jimi.... These are just some of my favorites. I don't pretend to say they're best at anything, except makeing me smile. |
