I have taken the initiative to invite all those who are interested in a S. Cal. get together. I don't have a date or location yet. However, I would like to see how many would be interested first. Depending upon where you are coming from, we can then decide on a central location. For now, this is what I know:
Moody - Orange County
Tony C - San Diego
Erlend - Orange County
Myself - Walnut, CA (35 minutes north of Moody)

Didn't somebody just moved to Manhatten Beach, CA around the beginning of the year. Anyway, please reply to this thread if you are interested. Please state your city of residence and how far you are willing to drive (time-wise). Thank you.

Depending on timing, 5.5 hour drive from Phx is not out of the question. This is a ukulele jam session, right?

Al, ya' beat me to it!!!

I was gonna say "e-mail for an address to send the tickets to" . . .

Farthest west I've ever been has been that "bastion of American Culture" - Las Vegas.

I'm tryin' to make it out to NAMM in Jan . . .

Maybe to get Cliff and Al out, what we need to do is figure out how to get us non-members a day pass to NAMM...then have a get-together in the afternoon/evening??

I'm game for an OFC uke !!

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Mr. Moody might have something like that hatching . . .

The deal with tradeshows is basically that, they're designed for the "trade". Exhibitors spend a LOT of money to participate, and in return for that, the traffic that they expect to be coming through their booth are people with legitimate credentials that are viable customers . . and in all honesty, you can't blame them for that. One of the biggest complaints from exhibitors here at NY shows is that the non-trade "public" gets in, gawks, gloms whatever free stuff they can get their hands on, and pretty much diverts some of the exhibitor's time away from a prospective "deal". I constantly get requests from friends that want "passes" for particular shows. I'm usually very reticent about obliging, and when I do, it's usually through the actual association or show management company that's putting on the show. Some are pretty lax with the restrictions, some definitely are not. It's my understanding that NAMM is one of those who are (understandably) not. I'm fortunate enough to be working for a company who is hired by NAMM to produce the show. When and if I do go out, I'll pretty much just use my Co.creds. just to get in the front door, and then pretty much put 'em away as to not paint the company in a bad light on the client's show floor.

So maybe I need to get that Ukelele franchise up and running and come to NAMM. Mix in a Day Spa for my wife and I'm sold. Let me pitch a tent in someone's yard and it's even better.

This is good stuff!

I'm in too...

I live in a appartment community where we can rent a club-house for $25 per hour. It's located in Irvine (close to Newport).

Anyways...I'm up for some jamming any time.

My Std Elite LX arrived yesterday and it's a beautifull piece. I'll post some pictures later on today or tomorrow.

Erlend, great news about the club house. Could you find out more details (max/min capacity, size, time, how to book it etc.). You can reply here or send me a regular e-mail (see my profile). If they allow it, I can bring the Bose L-1 for a PA system.

Tony, thanks for the support. This is really just a get together more than a jam session. Everybody will bring one or more of their beloved "O"'s to share with the rest of the OFC'ers. Food and drink and we'll have a blast!

Moody, are you there?

Okay, so far we have the following responses:

Moody - Orange County, CA
Tony C - San Diego, CA
Erlend - Irvine, CA
Playadamas - Walnut, CA (35 minutes north of Moody)
Tim Chapman - Yucaipa, CA (50 miles from Walnut, CA)
12 stringer - Sierra Madre, CA
Mario - Palmdale, CA
Standingovation - Phoenix, AZ 5.5 hrs.
stonebobbo - N. Cal. 5 hrs.

7 of us locally and 2 from a bit farther.

The club house that Erlend suggested sound really good, location wise and capacity wise (around 20). If you have no objection, I would settle on it as the location. Cost will be shared by all those who attend (any objection?). Food and drinks will be donated by whoever wish to do so.

Date: 1. Saturday mid-morning / afternoon

Possible: 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 8/7. Please respond with your first and second choice.

Please respond early so we could get this thing going! Miles, do you want to sponsor a few goodies for raffle? Al, a free guitar?

Not trying to "butt in" here, but you might wanna check to see if the club house IS in fact available on any/all of those days . . .
. . . might save you the hassle of agreeing on a date and THEN finding out it's unavailable and have to then go back to Square1. I've had to organize stuff like this before, and have learned the "pitfalls" the HARD way

Cliff, thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking about the same thing.

Erlend, thanks for checking the dates. How much do we have to put down to reserve the room? What's the cancellation policy?

Tony C. - 7/31 is good (7/24 difficult)
(myself) - 7/31 is fine
Tim C. - Sat. is out
Erlend - 7/31 (good?)

Would all the other S. Cal. participants please respond at your earliest convenience. I would like to finalize the date ASAP and book the club house.

Suzie - my beloved of 35 yrs and who has always encouraged me with my guitars, never telling me "you stink" - is coming with me. We will get a hotel nearby - any suggestions?

Suzie isn't one to participate in "guitar talk" - will want ammenities such as a pool :}

Are any other spouses or significant others coming?

Too bad Serge doesn't have some Los Angeles business that weekend (hint, hint.)

Gonna leave my good Hawaiian shirts at home, picked up an appropriate one at Albertsons today -- non-wrinkle polyester.

The hotels are located close to the John Wayne Airport, about 10 minutes drive away from my apartment complex. The pool is just outside the clubhouse. I suggest that you use John Wayne Airport (in Santa Ana) instead of LAX.

So far, we have the following confirmed:

Myself, Tony C, Erlend

Moody, are you in or not? Tim and Mario, we can meet on Sunday 8/1 if you are interested (7/31 at Erlend's, 8/1 at my place?)

Cliff, Al is coming out, are you game? Dave and Stonebobo, we need you guys for the rhythm section.

Let's get the first regional OFC gathering going and set a benchmark for the rest of the country. I promise you an unforgettable time.

By the way...didn't ask anyone but I sure don't see any problem - if you wanted to trade or sell something - bring it over. I'm not planning to bring anything for trade/sell but it would be a good opportunity.

If this was a Sat & Sun...would be able to come up Sat. afternoon, stay overnight, and some of Sun. Dinner anyone? New Jersey contingent would by my guest(s).

Thanks for the offer of another day but the weekend of the 31st/1st is all bad because I am leaving town that week, so I will be getting ready. Just post whatever works for you guys and if by some chance I can make whatever date you guys pick, I'll do my best.

P.S. I like that buy/sell/trade idea. It could become the yearly "Westcoast OFC jam/meeting/party/swapmeet!" Sounds like a blast!

Thank you for all those who responded. I think we have a date! Erlend, please reserve the venue. I would propose 1 or 2pm in the afternoon to make it easier for Dave and Tony since they have a long drive. All those attending (minus spouse or children) agree to share the cost of the clubhouse. I'll work out the rest of the detail with Erlend and Tony.

Invitation is still open to all those who are interested regardless of where you're from. Again, we'll probably have dinner Sat. night and another impromptu gathering at my place Sun. morning. Thank you again.

...hey moody, before you leave town, howzabout hiding one of your "bugs" in the room so we can get a recording of the goings on? Maybe even a mini-webcam!

Al, I think Moody is backing out because he thinks you are coming. Mauve shirt has always been his weakness. Dave, why don't you throw in a shiny bowl for the raffle - that should keep Moody in the game.

I'm REALLY sorry Witko, but after being "privvy" to that hotel story with you and Templeman, that statement just conjures up VERY disturbing images . . . .

But I did notice that AAA has amended their list of emergency items to pack in your car for a trip. Flashlight, empty can for gas, flare, cell phone and toilet plunger.

Slow day in the office, Cliff? This plunger is actually pretty cool.Although I think the SS bowl might be inadequate for the job at hand.

Dave;
As I told Moody earlier, it took all of 2.5 mins. (timed myself).
I spent more time navigating the damned Gallery utility.
If it's for you Dave, it's time well spent . . .

Attention all participants in the 2004 S. Cal. OFC inagural extravaganza: I need ETAs from Dave, Tony, Stonebobo et al.

I would propose 3 - 4 hours for the session, then onto dinner.

Please respond ASAP as Erlend needs to tell the Clubhouse people when and how long. He's going to make the reservation today.

Thank you again for your co-operation.

Mike, I can be there by noon. Where exactly is "there"? Irvine, John Wayne, ??? Point me in the right direction and I'll be there. Plan will be to stay over someplace sat night and maybe have another small jam on Sunday with whoever (and wherever) is left. We could go watch Moody play at church - I'm sure he wouldn't be nervous at all.

I've got a tentative offer for sleeping Sat night, but if anyone wants to share a hotel room or other arrangements that could work as well (I'll bring my own plunger). Let me know.

Al - Are you really showing up? Let me know if you need picking up at the airport or anything like that.

Tony - I saw your list. Can't you bring them all? I think you should bring the FD14 (I won't bring mine). People will love to play that one. I'll plan on bringing my shiny bowl Glen Campbell and Adamas II Slothead. Of course the Uke goes anywhere I go.

This will be a blast. What about food/drinks for the event? Let's get a 100% list of who will be there and divide up the chores. This will definately set the standard for any future events around the country. Oh yeah - who said they needed me for the rhythm section? I guess you've heard me play lead and sing?

Cool. Mapquest says 6 hrs. 1 minute. Directions: Get on freeway in Phoenix, 6 hours later get off freeway in Ervine. I asked Glen if he wanted to ride out with me but he said he's still doing community service that weekend.

Figured I'd bring one of the 30th Anniv Custom Legends and the Glen Campbell Preacher Deluxe 12-str (gig bag so wouldn't take much room - got a GC trc to fit.) Should be able to bring the FD-14.

Of course, with only 50 made, might not be fair to show anyone how great it is...

Maybe the slothead Custom Legend 12 or the Adamas I ?? if enough room - sorry, used to have a trailer hitch on my Z-28 but not on the Mustang GT.

Is anyone bringing an Adamas I ?? Michael?? If anyone hasn't played one, as I recently found out, the textured top is amazing.

Unless Al wants to change location, we'll be at the Hyatt Regency on Jamboree Rd. Suzie is coming up with me and, depending on how she feels, may take her directly to the hotel, with requested 12:30pm early check-in.

Just let me know when and I'll try to work it out. Would hate to miss any of this...

Tony and all, I am thinking about bringing the GC nylon Adamas prototype, 12-fret Slothead Adamas, Adamas II (Templeman will endorse it's sound) and a Martin M-42 custom (for comparison). I will also be setting up the Bose L-1 (4-input) with Boss AD-3 and AD-5 for all to use. I can bring the CL30/Ad I if you want. Just let me know. Celeb double neck?

I think 2pm will be a good time. Please be punctual. We can plan on staying for 3 - 4 hours then onto dinner.

We will meet again Sunday morning (breakfast?) then a small visit to my office (where the Os' live) until whenever. You are all invited.

?? I can bring the CL30/Ad I if you want ??

Guys, no reason to duplicate...as I have limited space in the car, let me know the couple of guitars I should bring. Is there any guitar someone wants to play but hasn't found in the rafters of a Guitar Center?

From what I have heard, it would be worth the trip to just visit Michael's office/museum.

Someone should bring a SS celebrity CC057 just for comparison (ha ha). This is what I summarize from the guitar list so far:

CL30 Custom Legend
Adamas GC Nylon proto
Adamas I
Adamas 12 fret slothead
Adamas II slothead
FD14 Folklore Deluxe
'68 GC Shiny Bowl
Martin D42

Not a bad start. Somebody needs to bring an Adamas I or II 12-string, and a Legend LX. I could bring a nice 1719 CL as well.

Damn, I'm sorry I'm going to miss this. I'll be driving the family home from Shaver Lake that day. Might be able to get by the dinner for a drink if somebody will let me know where everybody is. Dave?

Sunday morning I've got to play at church but can break away after that for a couple of hours in the early afternoon.

Invited Rudy Montes to come up from San Diego Sat night and possibly Sunday...he works for me and I need him working Saturday - hopefully, he and his wife Wanda can join us for dinner.

He's got the transparent burgandy 1777 LX.

No internet yet so hasn't joined the OFC.

Ay caramba! I plan on being there, but I still have some wigginess in my schedule because of pressing business issues on the East Coast. Assuming I'm there, I'll bring my 2000 Collectors, Solid Body Viper, and Viper Bass. Anybody want me to bring my Hamer solidbody, too?

Gee, and all I could offer to Al was a GS or Tornado; not a Viper but mine have almost rusted strings so Al would feel right at home.

:p  :p

If you can attend, I'll leave mine at home. Don't want Al "inspired" to play Partridge Family songs.

Les, no offense. By the way, Las Vegas isn't that far...

My suggestions:

1. Self introduction and your O's - 2 minutes ea.
2. Q & A - anybody with a comment or question, anybody with a n answer to that; Al's unofficial response to any mothership related question - 30 minutes total
3. Each one prepares a tune to showcase your particular O (talent is optional), tell a short story about your favorite O or O's - 10 minutes ea. = 1 hour for the whole group
*** Please don't be shy or intimidated, it's all about loving guitar and playing guitar, not a professional show down otherwise Al and I wouldn't even bother showing up ***
4. Some impromptu duets, trios etc.
- Folk rock etc.: S&G, CSN&Y, JT, D.Fogelberg etc.
- Rock: (Al?)
- Classical: (anybody?) Cavatina? Etudes?
- Jazz: Autumn Leaves? Satin Doll? So What?
- Blues: (Al?)
5. Raffle/Lucky Draw - Al's donating a guitar, right?
6. AOB

Gotta have an electric for Al...bringing the Preacher Deluxe 12 and could bring the Tornado - someone said they were bringing a Viper? If no other electrics, will bring the Tornado.

I'll bring my E-20 Olympus digital camera...

So far, planning to bring the 1658 Custom Legend 12 slothead, the Preacher Deluxe 12, and the FD-14 (and maybe the Tornado.) Don't have much room in the Mustang...gotta leave a little room for my wife. ;)

Let me know if there is anything that I should bring v. what I listed above.

This thing is really looking like fun.

My only request would be Willie's "It's a Bloody Mary Morning", as that typifies all of our travelling songs.

What is an Ovation Ready XLR Cable? I just use a regular XLR mic cable and it works fine. Whats up with this?

Don't some of the older XLR-equipped Adamases require a cable with one of the leads shorted to the shell? (or so I've heard . . )

wonder how many pages we can do on one thread...week and a half from the event, should be good for at least another six or seven pages.

No prize from someone who's:

Addicted On Bluegrass

That is an important part of the band:

"Assholes On Banjos"

Every bluegrass mandolin player I know refers to them that way, when I think about it, So, yes, I suggest a prize for revealing a deep, dark secret.

AOB = Any Other Business.

The prize was a vintage Adamas I, but since nobody got the right answer it has been destroyed and recycled.

Thanks to Tony and Michael for all their generosity and kindness. To say I was overwhelmed is an understatement.

I had a great time and wish we all could do it again real soon.

Paul is probably curious himself.

Just a comment, these get-togethers are a lot of fun, far beyond my expectations. And the guitars - knew visiting Michael's collection on Sunday would be overwhelming but Saturday - check out the pictures. Really recommend putting one of these sessions together wherever you can.

Damn ... looks like you all had a great time ... am more than disappointed I couldn't make it. Only two more weeks on the road and I should be able to stay home for a week. As luck has it, I will be in Newport Beach Aug 21-23. Timing is everything.

Tony,
Don't know about the Mountains, Though that would be a good place. Since I live near Fayetteville, NC-It's convenient to those who travel I-95.
I guess it all depends on who's interested and how many NC, SC, and Va, Ovationites would actually commit to a get together.
We'll see.
