Sometime this week, I'll finally receive the 2003 Ovation Collectors Edition guitar I ordered a couple weeks back. I'm just wondering - what do you all use when you record your Ovations? Are the pickup systems good enough on their own or do you mike your guitars as well? I figure the OP40 system in my Ovation is supposed to be pretty danged good.

actually it's not uncommon to see People Record Ovations Plugged in and mic'ed as Well. Miles and Paul T could give you some good technique/Mic Placement when you record. Just EQ adn Pan your signals slightly to the right and to the left. You'll be amazed with the sound. |

Location: Scotland | Personally I never record with pickup only. There isn't a pickup yet that sounds as good as an OK microphone. I occasionally mix a little of the direct sound with the miked signal but usually I use a pair of good condensers, either AKG414 or Rode NT3. Having said that, if the guitar is in a band mix with bass, drums keyboards & electric guitars then you can usually get away with direct-only, but for solo guitar & voice or acoustic ensembles it's got to be mikes. |

Location: Canada | I have an SM57, SM58 and a condenser mic, so I can use any of those. I will freely admit though, that the main reason I got the Ovation is for its plugged in sound and therefore the ease of recording. Ovation's had so much experience developing an excellent plugged in sound that I hope I can use *just* the plugged in sound if I want to without it sounding too thin. But if miking only adds to it, I'll happily do both.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I'm with Paul on this. If you really want to get the "sound" of any guitar, you need microphones. However, depending on the mix, sometimes just the onboard pre-amp is fine. I always record the pri-amp, and mix it in. The pre-amp picks up a lot of detail that can be useful in making a great end result sound with the mic's. |

When your record, do you use a mike too?
