I know that a twelve string guitar is heavier , due to more bracing and maybe thicker sides and top. But my question is, has anyone actually strung a twelve string up for SIX strings ?
I would like to know just how bad - or good - it sounds.Does it sound just a little worse , or a lot worse, or what?.
I ask because the neck on a twelve string is 1 7/8 inches , and that makes a dandy finger style width for a tavel/knockaround guitar.

Location: Phoenix AZ | The difference in weight between a 12 string and 6 string is not really that much. The bowl is the same (Felix - Ovations don't really have "sides". As far as I know the top is the same thickness. There are maybe a few more braces. The bridge is heavier and maybe pinned in 3 places. The neck, as far I know is the same, just a bigger headstock and more tuning keys. I don't really think the truss rod or k-bar is different than on a 6 string. I could be wrong.
The neck width is the same as Folklore or Josh White, so yes it would be a nice finger picking guitar. I think the sound with only 6 strings would be fine. But playing it would be a little odd. The 6 strings would be off-center slightly fron where they should really be on a 6-string (i.e. right in the middle of the 12-string pairs. To do it right, you should really install a 6 string nut and saddle.
In my opinion if you really want a wide neck knock-around guitar, look for a cheap Folklore. You can probably find one less than $300. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | The top is braced for more pull but that's about it. Should sound OK maybe a 90% The 1 7/8 is really nice. I find now that anything less than 1 3/4 I find too small. |

| The new "X" brace has filtered to most of the production line,including the 12 strings .It's the same bracing as the 6 with the major X a little taller and thicker.The tops are the same thickness on both the 6 & 12 strings.I agree with Bill that a wider neck is more comfortable to play.I had my'76 Ovation re-fitted with a 12 st. width neck.I'm not sure how much the sound would be changed with different bracing,there has been so many patterns over the years.One could always finger plane down the braces to loosen up the top till they get the sound they are looking for. |
