I've been going back and forth from lights to mediums and have even been mixing lights/mediums... still not the right match.
Then I saw the "Bluegrass" Phosphor/Bronze strings at www.Webstrings.com E=.012 A=0.16 D=.025 G=.034 B=.045 E=.056 and decided to try them.
I played at Church last night and those strings made my Balladeer SING! The were bright, fast, comfortable, held the tuning.... everything I wanted! It is really special when the "ahhhhhhh" factor happens!
Give 'em a try.... at webstrings they are VERY cheap ($2.85/set 1-11 and $2.60/set 12-more)and I can afford to change my strings as often as I like! :D |

Location: Yucaipa, California | I haven't noticed the need to adjust the neck (yet) .... strings (like many other things) are a very personal matter... but these have finally "scratched my itch" and playing with them last night was pure joy. They gave me that "Martin D28 sound" that the wooden-guitar-snobs are after!
I'm sure that many strings of the same gauge would respond as well, but the price at webstrings.com is too good to pass up!
What are the gauges of you strings? |

Location: Carle Place, NY | Martin also makes Bluegrass gauge strings, .012-.056, which are standard bronze. They're also inexpensive at either Music 123 or Musicians Friend, $3.49-$3.99. I think that they sound as good as Elixir, but obviously they don't last as long. They work great on my Custom Legend, however the action has to be set low at about 3/32". |

Location: 6 String Ranch | There is something to be said for having to change your strings frequently. When you do you tend to give your guitar a much better overall cleaning, oil up the f/b, check the inside (if it's a round hole) and whatever else strikes you when you have it appart in front of you. And it always sounds better when you're done! |

Location: St. Petersburg, FL USA | Tim, I ordered three sets each of the bluegrass and the lights from webstrings a few weeks ago. Prompt shipment, great price.
I tried the bluegrass ones first, I have the lights on right now. I don't think I noticed a huge difference, but I'll keep listening after changes. The bluegrass low E definitely "cleaned out" the hole for it in the bridge :eek:
I had been using elixir nanoweb, kept breaking Gs. I really liked the feel of the elixirs, I miss that, but otherwise I'm happy with these. I'm gonna try that stuff that PT recommends (stringlife.com) & see if I get that feel back. |

I tried the Elixirs but had these issues:
1) Way too expensive, couldn't afford to change the strings as often as I would like
2) Too slippery for me: My finger calluses tend to get thick and rather stiff and I kept "slip sliding away" off the strings... the Elixirs didn't have any "tooth" to help keep my fingers on the strings.
For the price of strings at www.webstrings.com, I can change as often as I like and not break the bank!
But, like one Sage OFC member said: "It's all ice cream"!
p.s. I just ordered a bottle of Stringlife from www.stringlife.com and will post the results once I've tried it. |

Location: St. Petersburg, FL USA | The cost factor is huge. As much as I love the Elixirs, I have always been looking out for a cheaper way. The best deal I got was from a buddy who owns a music store, & he sold them to me for $11. Hopefully, the Stringlife / Webstrings combo will be the winning recipe. I was really getting sick of breaking them. MAN is THAT expensive...
I guess the "feel" thing is somewhat in my head, 'cause the second set of the regulars felt much more normal to me. I do like the slippery thing, though. I'm gonna order stringlife today. Looking forward to reading your take on it... |

Location: Rocky River, Ohio | Hi guys....I still like the John Pearse custom lights 80/20's on my adamas and legend..they last and last and just have the warmest bass response..
I use the D Pro Arte extra hard for the classic..they still sell the 9 string sets, you get an extra set of wound strings.. |
