Hey guys. Crossing over from the HFC to pick your collective brain. I have almost zero experience with Ovations and would like some guidance with buying my first one.

I'm looking for an acoustic to replace the Takamine I've been using during live performances. Mostly I'll be with a full band, but I'll also be doing some solo stuff. I have a bead on a '94 Elite Standard that looks nice and is certainly priced well.

Unfortunately, I'd be buying this blind. I was wondering how these sound (straight to a PA and unplugged) and if the flavor of preamp (FET-3?) is drastically different than the newer ones. Basically, is it worth it to shell out more money for a newer model with the updated electronics?

Any tips at all about the guitar in general would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nathan

As far as I'm concerned the pre-amp is irrellevant. The newer pres have some nice extras like the tuner & feedback notch, but the basic sound of all of the earlier versions is fine, if you need extra EQ or feedback control there's plenty of outboard gear that will do the job. If you like the guitar, get it, the FET3 works fine.

I like the newer preamps but Paul is right there are a ton of ways to get around their limitations.
