Location: SoCal | I just sent out this email to a few people and thought I'd post it here for feedback.
Finally got around today to doing a back to back comparison of the GC 12 with Big Blue (Adamas 12). Not surprisingly, acoustically, Blue blows the GC 12 out of the water. Much better sound, much smoother.
Plugged in, the GC 12 may actually be the better guitar in that the OP 40 preamp is better than the OP 24 in Blue.
I like the neck on the GC in that it has the gloss finish and feels better, and it's a flatter neck. Blue's neck has more of a v shape and has a satin finish.
Both are very satisfying to play. It's like a 30 year old Porsche vs. a new one. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. When playing the GC 12, I couldn't help but think that if it had Blue's top, it would be about perfect.

Location: Long Island, NY | Funny you should mention the comparison testing as I have been doing the same... I rotate the outgoing CL12(94) and the incoming Adamas 12(02). I agree the difference in sound is awesome however I do like the new satin neck more than the gloss. Since i first started picking up Adamaii (sp?) for a quick strum in Sam Ash I have been anxiously awaiting my own satin neck. As far as electrically I love the CL12/OP24 sound and i haven't had a chance to plug in with theAdamas.... have to make time tomorrow :) |

I already have a GC 12-string. Please send me your Big Blue Adamas 12-String and I will be more than happy to write up the results of my testing them side by side.

Location: So. Cal. | I don't have a GC12 but I do have an Adamas I 12. I compared it against a 1987LE 12 and a SMT 12 and here's my personal thoughts.
Adamas I - solid and punchy, bright and warm
1987LE - even brighter, body seems to ring a lot more, acoustically superior, less punchy
SMT - overall nice balance, middle of the road, does not stand out compare to the previous two, a bit boring if I might say so.
All 3 guitars are stringed with Adamas 1616, tuned to concert pitch.
That said, however, everytime I pick up any of the Ovation/Adamas guitars they stand on their own. I seldom compare them with anything else while playing it. They are just so damn satisfying to play.

I'd be more than happy to do a comparison test on your 12 strings, and I'd throw in a comparison of your Deluxe Viper with my stock one. Just ship them all to my address, I'll even pay the shipping costs. Great idea getting other members to play and compare your guitars.

As a close personal friend, let me first say I am somewhat concerned. I've never noticed such a conflicted tone to your posts in the past. In order to maintain your mental well being my friend, may I suggest the following.
I will send you $350.00 for your GC 12 (by the way, we all say GC because nobody's really sure how the heck to spell Cambpell :eek: ), thereby clearing any confusion as to which of your 12 stringed collection sounds the best, and thus restoring 'Ol Blue back to the unquestion status it once hailed, and surely still deserves!

I'm starting to feel your pain. I sent my Haida Gwaii guitar back to the maker in order to have the bracing retuned. I sent US Air Mail. They told me it should be there in about 6 days.
That was two weeks ago! I haven't heard a word.
Bad thing is, I didn't know I had to pay extra to have it tracked on their web site.
I hope it doen't get lost.

Location: SoCal | I've decided that if I ever win the lottery and can afford to have Ovation build me a guitar (like some people on this board), I'll have them build me a slothead, 12 fret to the body, 12 string, with an original Adamas top. The neck would be similar the my 69 GC 12, same shape, with a gloss neck. Fretboard would be ebony and same design as the GC. The top would be the multi hole design, reverse blue burst. I'd put on the exact sound systme that Paul T. has.
My guess is that you would have a 12 string to beat all 12 strings. You'd have a killer acoustic sound (with the bridge moved to the center of the guitar and the sloted headstock giving a bigger break of the nut) and be able to put together a killer plugged in sound. |
