Location: UK | Well, I think I've finally got to change the strings on my Elite Special which I bought last November! I can't believe how long the original set lasted and how good the guitar has sounded up to now.
I've pretty much used the same model of string on all my acoustics for years, which is D'Addario J11 or J16s light guage. I've no idea how these will sound on an Ovation and before I take the plunge I wondered if I could ask for some guidance from the Board? Any recommendations as to manufacturer and set?
If it helps, my style is acoustic folk, a mixture of finger style and flatpicking (so although I prefer light guage I don't need to do extreme string bends or Steve Vai runs).
BTW, when I bought the guitar, the shop threw in a set of Elixir strings which they claimed were the best ever. Are they?

Location: High, in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado | Hey biglouis, sounds like you got some good mileage off of those original strings. I have never used the Elixers, but hear they are nice. If I had a set sitting around, I'd give em a try.
Living where I do, high and dry, I always take the opportunity to give my babies a good cleaning and a drink of Lemon oil during string changes.
I play it hard before, take my time with the string change and cleaning, play it hard after wards. Then I can get a good idea about the new strings.
It's all part of the enjoyment for me... ;)

I envy your string endurance abilities! I have to change mine every week and wish I could afford to change them more often. I use D'Addario EJ16 on my Ovation. They have a good feel and sound (for a few days). Don't worry, I wear other brands of strings out just as fast. There's my two cents worth. I have never tried Elixirs.

Location: Colorado | I used to put Elixers on my Ovation. They are absolutely amazing. It was like playing a new guitar. Unplugged the sound was louder and brighter and it was much easier to play. However, at about $15 per set, I can't afford to use Elixers all the time. I usually just use D'Addario (don't know the gauge off the top of my head). But Elixers last much longer than normal strings. With the kind of mileage you get out of your strings, Elixers might be a sound investment :)
