Personally I like them, the look very cool & really make a statement. I've heard Matt Smith use one plugged-in & it sounded fine. Unplugged they sound as good as a laminated-top is capable, the mid-depth rather than the supershallow version will help with the unplugged sound |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I have one and agree with what Paul T said above. The design / looks get comments from both extremes. I have not met anyone who has said "it's ok", they either love it or hate it. Although I haven't tried it out camping or the beach yet, it looks and feels very durable, the electronics are great. The round back (mid-depth) gives it enough kick for outdoor play too. |

Location: Seattle | I've played 2 different MOB's and liked them both. I thought they sounded pretty damn good. So good in fact that I'd put it up to most current low end USA Ovation models. It's definitely a different approach to the round back guitar that some traditionalists will dismiss, but I think it's a step in a valid direction as effectively demonstrated by your interest.

Location: SoCal | It's like any other super shallow bowl Celeb. Any guitar that you expose to the beach, is not going to be a great acoustic guitar. But that's not the point of the MOB. It's a guitar that you can take to the beach, play around a bonfire, and still take to a gig and plug it in. |

That was the Ovation in the 70's, tough, good sounding, "It's a guitar you can take to the beach, play around a bonfire, and still take to a gig and plug it in." Those words would have perfectly described the Ovation in southern CA in the 70's.

I say take it to a beach and start a bonfire with a crowd of surfers and a keg on a warm summer night, play the shit out of it and sing beach type songs, drink beer, walk sand, emote with bikini clad beauties, howl at the moon, and evaluate it the next day. DID YOU GET ANY NOOKIE? If so it is a great guitar, if not trade it in on a new Thunderbird, That should get you nookie of the 1957 variety. |

Location: Tennessee | DO NOT start a bonfire with it ... the stench from the burning plastic (errr ... fiberglass) will be so frigging bad even Paul H will come running down the beach to "Save the MOBs". |

I'll bet there isn't more than one of these sour grape types that has ever hit the beach at La Jolla, sure burn the guitar in the bonfire, but you still have to do a Dick Dale to get any nookie. Surfin' originated at La Jolla in the 60's, and those kahunas never saw a guitar, surf music came later in LA. |

| I lived at the Huntington Beach pier ever summer from 58 to 61 and if you could body surf and had the balls to jump off the pier when the life guards weren’t looking you could get the girls attention. Then, if you had some food and a pack of cigarettes you could hold their attention and if you had a 55 or later Chevy and some money you’d have to beat them off with a stick. I don’t remember guitar burning as a real girl getter but maybe that’s what it takes now days and that’s why I not getting the nookie I us’ta. |

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | Sonny, I did not play one in Lafayette. I was in Dallas when I had that displeasure. Tell your friend to look on ebay. Does your friend come to Lafayette much? Also, tell him he can find an older Ovation on ebay that is a WAY better guitar than the MOB for less money.....Paul Hebert |

| Bailey,
‘Did I ever meet Bob Nolan?’ No, but I worked one summer for a Gun Smith in Long Beach in the late 60’s who know him. This guy was an x cowboy stuntman for one of the studios in Hollywood. He played the guitar a little and was a quick draw expert. He liked to play Ghost Riders and Cool Water. Anyway the story goes he had met Bob on some movie set and said ‘if you’ll teach me Cool Water on the guitar I’ll teach you how to quick draw a Colt single action Army and hit a bear can from the hip at 50 feet.
I was left with the impression that neither learned the others craft very well.

Shooting a bear in the ass with a six gun sounds kinda dicey to me, even from 50 feet.

I had to ask about Bob Nolan as he was rumoured to be very unlikely to show up for a Sons of the Pioneers session if the surf was up. Good story, I am and always have been a big fan of the Sons of the Pioneers and Roy Rogers, I was never so happy as when I saw them playing a roundback mandolin just like my vintage roundback Washburn. Caused me to go through my complete "Son's" repertoire on it, "Empty Saddles", "One More Ride", Tumbling Tumbleweeds", "Blue Prairie", "Cool Water", etc. before I traded it in on a Martin acoustic preamp for my B.B. jr on one of my mandolins. Again, good story.
