I am no expert, but I remember reading about it in the Ovation history book that the first ones were molded plastic like material, then the later ones were machine carved wood pieces (glued on the headstock, not one piece). From looking at the various Adamas that I have, the later ones do look like real wood carvings, whereas the older ones are either plastic or having a thick plastic coating on top.

Just me and my Adamas!

I'm not sure when they went back to carved Walnut, but I'm prettyt sure an '81 will be Urelite
