Your dad brags on you a lot. Be proud that he loves you. As for embarassing our kids in public, it's not part of the job description of being a parent, it's just one of the perks.
I may try to get to Santa Monica for one of your gigs with my wife (great excuse for a date aways from the kids). If we get there, can we say hello? |

When in San Luis, stay at the Madonna Inn if you can afford it. It’s a hoot.
Don’t drive drunk! It’s a college town and the cops are every ware on Friday and Saturday nights.
When in San Juan try the El Adobe for a classy dinner, Nixon used to eat there.
Or San Juan Depot Bar & Grill usually has good entertainment.
For a real treat have someone take you to the Swallows Inn. It’s across the street from the El Adobe. If its after 10pm don’t go inside it can get pretty ugly. Just stand in the door and check it out. I’ve spent a lot of nights in that honky-tonk.
All these places are within a mile of the Coach House.

Sorry for getting on the bandwagon so late... but you all have me REALLY curious about Kaki's playing and her CD...where can I get it or hear her music (in Jersey!)?
It's a real treasure to have a supportive parent when you're a musician. It's actually a blessing beyond words.
I played my father one of my newest recordings the other day and he said nothing. Nothing. I would rather he said it sucks (which it doesn't) or he simply didn't like it. But he's too F**King self absorbed to even acknowledge that hours of heart and hard work went into something someone else created.
(Do you hear the violins playing? They're playing [sob] a song of sympathy for me! tee hee)
Kaki, I wish you and your dad all the best!

She just played in NYC a few weeks ago.
I wasn't able to make it as I had a gig.
If by chance Dave doesn't have anymore CD's available, I can burn you a copy of mine and arrange to get it to you. After all, you ARE a "local boy"!
Lemme know. |

Location: atlanta | Johnny, thanks so much for your interest. The CD you are inquiring about was a self-produced, do-it-yourself which Kaki issued under her own copyright in April 2002. Let me quote from an earlier post I made on one of the boards:
"The DIY CD is in the process of being re-mastered by her new record label for commercial release in April 2003, and it will include CD-ROM data including a video of Kaki playing her guitar onstage. I have a few of the do-it-yourself CDs. The fan club has been so helpful, in so many ways, that until they run out, I will send the CD, free of charge, to any of you who would like to have it. Email me your mailing address and I'll try to get one to you, no matter where you are in the world . The way I look at it, any fan of Kaki King is a friend of mine."
I didn't have that many to begin with, and completely ran out about three weeks ago! So there's bad news and there's good news. The bad news is all of the DIY are gone; the good news is that her label release (packaging, artwork, remastering, and CD-ROM) will be during the first week of April. Her record label is Velour Records, and will be distributed in the Sony/Red distribution network. I'll put a notice on the board when it hits the market.
Scott and Paul, thanks for the Texas suggestions. I'm originally a "Texacan" myself, born and raised, but have been in Atlanta for so long that by now I'm completely "southern fried". She is scheduled to appear in March at the SxSW music industry convention in Austin, and in early May at the New Orleans Jazz Fest.
Rich, I don't know of any Midwest appearances other than Bonaroo (July-Tennessee).
6-Stringer, I wouldn't be surprised at all if she tours the mid-Atlantic later this year.
Stonebobbo, by purest coincidence, I'll be in SF on the day of the Fillmore show. It will be my pleasure to buy you at least one "tall, cool one", and introduce you to Kaki between sets.
Best regards to everybody--
Dave King |

Sometimes dad's don't know what to say. They are so busy being dad and responsible that when the time comes to praise their kids, they just don't have the words.
Be tolerant. You can be angry about your dad, or you can just accept the fact that he's doing the best he can and it just might not be up to your standards.
Now I'll shut up. I've probably said too much. |

Location: ma. | Kaki and proud Papa, congratulations it sounds like we've got a rising star. that's a feeling not many musicians can experience. seeing the country is it's own reward for having enough talent to support your journey. i don't know to what extent your label is setting up or supporting your website site, if you think you' re lagging in that area, click on http://afxs.tripod.com/ this guy can do amazing things with audio and video. he's based out of Santa Monica but he does stuff on the cheap. Kaki, enjoy the ride! |

Location: Scotland | I beg to differ, seeing the country is the purgutory that has to be endured between gigs. The hour a day on stage may be fun, if there's a decent sound system & a friendly engineer with half-decent ears, but the rest of it is just something that you put up with, especially when you've ran out of socks & your underpants are inside-out for the third time, and that's before we consider what being on the road does to your eating habits...aaaagh!!!!! |

Mr. Dave King-Thanks for your response...you are most generous to have made that offer to the OFC fans of Kaki. You really seem like a fantastic guy, and your support for her is very admirable! I'm really looking forward to Kaki's release and your post! How exciting for both of you!
Mr. Paul- Thanks for your input on the "dad" thing. Truly, I understand you are right, and despite my bitter comment, I have had that understanding for quite a while. Patience between parents and kids is tough at times, from both perspectives. My father and I have a tough relationship, but where it counts, for the most part, it's on target, and I appreciate him very much.
Still, I'm sure some therapy is in order! Heh heh!
Have a great day, guys!

Location: atlanta | Pep, I guess there will always be a market for promos as well as for used cds, that's just the nature of things these days. I would merely point out that an artist makes absolutely nothing on the sale of such items. Of course, we all must follow our own conscience about these issues.
In Kaki's case, her record deal was pretty slim on the front end, but made up for by a generous per-disc royalty. Sort of just the reverse of what happens with the "major stars". At age 23, I know for a fact that she is really going to depend on the retail sales of this new record in order to make her living and keep her career going long enough to produce a second record of original Adamas-oriented music.
In a sort of happy coincidence, I'm happy to tell all the OFC members that her record is now available both at Amazon and at Barnes & Noble, and that their prices are actually competitive with the copyright-violators at e-bay. Don't take my word for it, check them out:
http://bn.com
http://amazon.com
Just put her name in the search box, then click on the link.
The cd also has cd/rom content including a professionally-produced video of her performing onstage and being interviewed "MTV-style".
On her behalf, let me again express the most sincere appreciation for the interest you all have taken in her, and deepest gratitude to the Ovation/Adamas management who have shown such honor to her.
Finally, on a personal note, I will always believe that the members of OFC had a a lot to do with her becoming an Adamas Artist. Thank you one and all.

Location: Bethel, Me | Point taken. Just wanted to hear more of her music and the link on her sight to cdbaby said it was permanently out of stock, do not order. Didn't know at the time that it was coming out later this month. I've read the rave reviews on this site and heard a few songs on MP3.com. Had planned to see the show in Trenton, but it coincided with the OFC factory tour. I'm looking forward to hearing her live when she comes back to the east coast. |
