Hello Folks,
There were 16 people who signed up for this project to submit tunes, but I have only received TWO entries so far. Only one of the emails sent out to all of the participants got rejected so I assume everyone received the notice to print the release form and get the entries in. We missed being able to get it out for the holidays, but I was hoping to have it in time for the 1st Anniversary of the Fan Club, although that's getting down to the wire also.

If anyone is having problems let me know, I really think this would be a great CD that shows off REAL people playing Ovations.

You need to get a tune from Kaki King, who's dad visited this page a while back. That girl is an incredible player.

Miles;

I agree with Paul on the Kaki King route.
I've heard her play and she's an AWESOME player!!
(Very much in the vein of Preston Reed/Michael Hedges/Willy Porter.) Good stuff!

As for myself, I apologize because I was one of the ones that had originally signed up. I had good intentions to get something original put together and on tape, but band gigs, work, and life in general never afforded me the time to do so and I missed the original Sept. deadline to get something in. After that, time just got even "tighter".

What kind of a timetable are you looking at?

I (still) don't have the time to write/arrange an original compostion. I'd given some thought about doing an arrangement of a "traditional" song and sidestepping the "licensing" legalities.

If you'd be willing to accept it, what's the latest that I can overnight you a mixed-down casette?

I am going to sound like a jerk here but, so be it. If she is interested in submitting a song and being a part of the forum great but I don't feel that Miles nor I should go soliciting material.

If anyone still wants to submit an entry, then they should. I think it will be good exposure for the artists and Ovation guitars.

I updated the link at the left so that entries can be accepted again. Just follow the directions. I get notified when someone completes the form.

I would rather hear a submission from her dad at least he took the time to participate in the forum. (I realize that he has medical problems that prohibit him from playing)

Al, you have no idea how much I would love to submit something (anything!), but I'm afraid that part of my musical life is over for good. Eight years ago, at the absolute peak of my playing ability, I was able to render a fairly competent version of "The Blossoms" by the late Nick Drake. As usual, I couldn't figure out how to play it, so Kaki listened to it a few times, and came up an arrangement which I could play fingerstyle in standard tuning but with a descending "open voicing" that was just beautiful. It was about then (when she was 15), that I began to realize that she had some sort of special gift for guitar.

I haven't asked her about the fan club CD because I thought it was too late. Certainly I will ask her if she would like to submit an original tune. Copyrights and licensing agreements could be a problem--maybe all that can be worked out. I'll do my best.

Paul Moody and Cliff actually have an informed opinion about Kaki--I sent them a courtesy copy of her DIY CD because of the help they were to Kaki and me privately after my first posting about the loss of her Adamas. I sent one to Mike Bross for the same reason. The CD is in the process of being re-mastered by her new record label for commercial release in early April. I have a few of the do-it-yourself CDs. The fan club has been so helpful, in so many ways, to Kaki's dilemma, that until they run out, I will send the CD, free of charge, to any of you who would like to have it. Email me your mailing address and I'll try to get to get one to you, no matter where you are in the world . The way I look at it, any fan of Kaki King is a friend of mine.

Some things have been happening at Ovation about a replacement of some sort, and I'll post again when I know more.

Best regards to all.

Dave King

Thanks for posting Dave. Gets me off the hook with Al and Miles. Meaner, tougher people you've never seen. Except when it comes to dealing with people on this page. Or helping with guitars. Or any number of other things. Ok, I admit it, they're not so bad.

I haven't submitted anything for the cd because, quite honestly, my guitars have much more music in them then I can get out of them. If you heard me play, you'd say with a yawn, "So?" If you knew the truth and heard me play, that I have no musical abiltiy what so ever (hey, I'm a middle age white guy -- don't expect much) and what I have learned was learned by brute force -- well, maybe then you wouldn't think too badly of me.

It's only in the last couple of years that I've been able to separate the guitar from singing (I can't sing without a guitar in my hands). With the exception of a few Jerry Reed tunes and some other stuff, I'm not an instrumentalist. And I'm definitely not an original. There's not much I can contribute to the cd.

Haveing said all that, I'm very much looking forward to hearing what others play. I've heard some of Paul Templeman's playing and he's a damn fine player.

Nuff said.

Paul, thank you. I feel similarly trapped by the "originality" thing. I couldn't write a song if my life depended on it, I've spent my musical career as a sideman for songwriters. Unlike you, even if I could write a song, I couldn't sing it, I'd gladly trade instrumental abilty for a half-decent singing voice. I have some material for the OFC CD that I've played on & produced, by a couple of great songwriters. They're recorded & ready to go but waiting for copyright clearance.

As we hit the first anniversary of the OFC hopefully the new members will get onboard the CD project. It's a fantastic idea, a great promo for the guitars & an even better (FREE!!!) showcase for all the talent out there. I know that Miles is a little disappointed that it hasn't progressed as far as it should have, let's make it happen.

guess I am Hitler Mussolinni and Atilla the hun all rolled up in one.
I am sure if we put an open call on 5 newsgroups we would get more submissions than we would ever be able to accomodate.
I think some of you may be underestimating your abilities. You haven't heard my submission yet....

Al, you never cease to put a smile on my face and for once, I'm serious.

If this recording isn't going to be sold, then do we need to worry about copywrite laws? Maybe I should fly to England, play rhythm for Paul T, and sing the tunes he knows. Just a thought.

Sorry about the "originality" thing. I assume you all understand that we just can't make a CD of other peoples music without permission. As far as those who play but can't sing.. Instrumentals are fine, they show off the instruments better.

Hey Guys...Happy New Year to ya!

I would love to make a submission to the CD (couldn't before, just finally got my home studio), but I need to know a realistic deadline. I'd probably need about a week or so to put a song together on cd (I'm still trying to figure out this damn digital recorder)...will that work for you? Please let me know.

Thanks a bunch!

I'm sure you have a few weeks left. As far as talent and ability, I'm not sure that has anything to do with good music. I'm sure you would not be playing if it caused you to gag. I learned a long time ago to play what makes me happy... if others like it.. that's just a bonus.
Frankly, before we get too side-tracked, 12 people signed-up, with material, back before September. I have only received two of those entries, and actually only heard back from 4 folks total. I am a little surprised.

As one of the two who sent something in, I'm glad to hear I didn't hold up the process by not sending it right away : )

Fire up that recording software/turn on that tape deck/book a little studio time - I'm looking forward to hearing you all play!

Hey Paul I guess you and I can record a half of a side each and have our own cd.
I too am looking forward to hearing everyone's playing. This is not about ability or professionalism, it is about having your music heard and sharing your love for Ovation guitars.

Miles,

I am rather new to the board so I don't know much about the proposed CD. I will be glad however to send you a song. I assume you want to showcase the Ovations guitars, so how about I just record a basic accoustic guitar song (with perhaps a bass, but no drums, pianos or electric guitars) with vocals. I have one you might like called "I Know I'm Goin' To Heaven If God Grades On The Curve".
Just let me know the address of where you want me to send the CD and I'll try to record the song this weekend.
Thanks.
Mike

Glad the CD opened back up. I checked with my bandmates/songwriters and one of them has 5 new songs! We'll try to get something in the can within a week to send - it'll feature one of us on my Applause mandolin and my Celebrity doing the rythym...

I received a copy of Kaki King's CD "Everybody Loves You" yesterday and have to say it is sensational! Just the gal and her guitar, no frills or big production tricks and I just love it. I have been playing it non-stop.

Thanks Popcritic!

Wayne and Cliff, thanks for the kind words. And thanks to all of you who requested a copy of her CD. I just found out that her label will release her remastered CD in early April, and that it will include CD-ROM data including a video of Kaki playing her guitar.

Many of you have expressed an interest in how the problem of her stolen guitar turned out. Well, let me tell you how GREAT the Ovation Company really is. They have made a replacement for her, and she is back in business. Her first gig with the new instrument was for a charity event last week at the Bottom Line in NYC.

I still don't have much detail on who was involved and how it all happened, but basically she feels that some sort of miracle has occurred. And for all I know, people at the factory knew something about the situation from looking at the postings on this wonderful fan club website which Miles and Al created last year.

The guitar that was stolen was an "old" Adamas II 1581-7 (deep bowl cutaway, single epaulet, two knob). The Ovation Company made her a modern Adamas II 1581-7 (deep bowl cutaway, dual epaulets, modern electronics). She says it is virtually identical to the one she had.

What all this says to me is that the company really cares about the young artists who are out there on stage playing their guitars.

As soon as I get a digital picture suitable for posting, I'll upload it into the Members Gallery.

Does that mean that somewhere in the future that we may have a "Kaki King Signature Model?" That would be something...
Btw, I also received a copy of her cd (thanks David)- simply amazing! It's awesome to hear that Ovation was able to come through for her like that!

Great news, Popcritic! There's nothing better than knowing that there are fine people behind a fine company. We will to be sure to express our appreciation for the effort the company made during our factory visit in March.

Please keep us posted when the release happens. And tell Kaki there are 1000 Ovation fans lined up to support her CD.

Miles;

Am I too late to submit something?
(I know, I know, I know!)

It's just that my girlfriend's out West on business and I now have free range to turn our apartment's kitchen into a makeshift studio for an extended amount of time undisturbed.

If I'm too late, no prob.
Just lemme know.

If it's not too late, my son now has a digital recording setup and I might be able to get him to work on one of his original songs with my Viper and maybe some other Ovations that I can use. He's using my computer on his work so he owes me.

Watcha got in mind. Full online sessions, or just contributing to a common project via the internet? I have done the later with bands. Very handy, one person send a riff, the next adds to it etc.. etc..

I had only originally submitted cut# 8 (Thinking Of You) Off of my "Still Kickin'" CD, but if you need more tunes to fill 'er up, you can add cut #4 (It's Ok By Me)in which I was also pickin' my Ovation 12 String 1866 Legend.
