Hello there.

I recently bought a Celebrity CC243 - I know they're hardly well thought of here, but it's good enough for my purposes...

All has been fine until today when I've found that the tuner no longer seems to be working: when I try to activate it, the up and down arrows just blink alternately. I've tried changing the battery but to no effect. The preamp still works fine and the tuner was working perfectly the last time I used it several days ago.

I'm sure I'm just missing something really simple but if anyone could offer some advice it wuld be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Yousef

Does the letter for the key/string light-up, or just the arrows?

It's just the arrows - slowly blinking, one after the other...

Okay, I'm Lost. I had a coupla Celebrities with the OP4BT before, but I have never had that problem. And I cannot find a manual for one of them online. Don't be insulted, but are you sure the new battery is Good?

Anyway... Welcome Yousef!

Maybe one of the smarter members will wake-up soon.

Ooo! I just remembered. Don't they do that when the tuner is on, and it is waiting for you to hit a string? If you hit a string and the key don't light-up, could the wire from the pick-up come loose? It just plugs into the back of the box that the pre-amp is in.

I still know nuthin'... I'm just guessing.

Well, the other batteries I've tried weren't absolutely brand new but I've tried them all with the voltmeter and they really should be good enough.

I'll definitely see if a wire has come loose - the weird thing is that the guitar has been sat perfectly still for at least a week (damn work and real life getting in the way.) Unless someone has knocked it over and didn't admit it...

Thanks for your time and advice.

We'll all encourage you to buy a higher end Ovation or Adamas, but if what you have is what meets your purposes, nobody is going to run you down for it around here!

Is your guitar new or did you buy it used? If it is new you should be able to get service from the seller.

As far as electronics go, one thing you can try is to disconnect the battery for a full 3 minutes. If the electronic hardware has locked up, it will fully discharge by 3 minutes without power, allowing a clean reset. Probably this won't help, but it's worth a try.

The guitar was new from a shop but bought as a 'second' because of some untidy glueing. So I'm not sure where I would stand on the question of service from the seller. Worth looking into though.

I'll give the three minute reset a try but I think it's probably had at least that long without a battery while I've been messing around.

Which brings me to my next question: how the devil do you get to the back of the preamp to check the connections? I've unclipped the front panel and taken out all of the screws and although the unit now slips from side to side, I can't get it to lift out. What am I missing here?

Again, thanks for the advice.

Here's a hint on batt voltages: Most batts will display it's rated voltage on a voltmeter, even if near depletion. Why? Basically no 'load' using a meter. Once a load (re circuit) is connected then the questionable batt voltage will drop due to current demand.

In short, a voltmeter will tell ya the batt voltage, but not the capacity.

Some experts may technically question my explanation. But for the average citizen, it's sufficient.

That's useful to know but even so I would have thought that the preamp would have had a greater demand on the battery. It seems a little strange to me that the preamp and eq would work perfectly well while the tuner was struggling for power.

Anyway, I've checked a couple of the batteries in high drain devices and they seem to be full of juice...

I'm working on the assumption that a wire has come loose somewhere but I'm a bit stuck until I find out how to get the connections without pranging anything...

I recently purchased a 2077lx. I had a similar problem with the pre amp. The up and down arrows flashed, but the tuner did not work. Afer a while the flashing stopped and the tuner would not engage at all, but the pre amp still worked. My guitar was still under warranty so I brought it to the dealer who looked at it. I was not the connections or battery. The unit was broken. Ovation is replacing the pre amp for me. The dealer would have given me a new one on the spot, but they had no similar pre amps in stock.

Sounds like a faulty unit to me - there wouldn't be a loose wire just for the tuner.

Anyway - welcome yousef. Do you think these guys realize that when Special Branch impound your computer they are all going to Guantanamo? ;) :D

Ahh...

I wonder how I'll go about getting a replacement given the slightly shadowy origins of my instrument.

Not too bothered about the tuner really, but I'm worried that this might be a sign that the whole preamp is about to pop its clogs.

Special Branch? :)

It's probably just something in the tuner-circuitry itself.

I've got an Adamas LongNeck that has a dodgy tuner and the pre-amp works fine.

Ironically, it's ONLY guitar I have w/an on-board tuner, and it doesn't work.

I generally just tune off my pedal-board . . .
