Because of early influences:

Peter, Paul and Mary
Pete Seegar
Burl Ives

As far as the closet goes I have only one regret. When the Culture Club album came out I kinda thought the chic in the komono was a little hot... but I don't think I was the only one taken in on that !

A few members already know this, but I actually enjoy Opera. My favorite composers are Verdi, Rossini, Richard Wagner, Schumann, Bizet, Offenbach, Berloiz and Prokofiev.

In Ireland you can't admit to liking country music but that's largely because of the artists listed here http://www.irishmusic.co.uk/
Some of them seem to play Ovations... http://www.irishmusic.co.uk/bigtom3.htm

Nobody. If I like 'em, I'll let anybody know. I do however have a confession about TV. Although I haven't owned one in many many years, and will not allow one in my house, years ago I was a closet "Waltons" fan. And if I'm traveling and staying in a motel, I still tune in.

Not sure why Neil Diamond keeps popping up here. He's one of my all time favs and the first concert I ever went to (yeah, mom took me).

The opening to Hot August Night leading into Crunchy Granola still gives me goosebumps.

Back on topic though. I have a penchant for hardcore and extremely loud obnoxious music at times. Then again, I don't mind a good polka either

Didn't usually talk about The Carpenters or 5th Dimension whom I still listen to, but when the other topic about artists we like came up... and I narrowed down the list to two whom I'd buy anything they put out...

The ORIGINAL J-LO, Jennifer Love Hewitt. I don't know why, but I like her music (yeah her other assets too). It's not great, it's not all that special, but maybe like came up in the Ozzie thread... it's her passion, always has been, and that's what comes across in her tunes. Jennifer Love Hewitt

Also, and from the other extreme is The Meatmen. I met Tesco Vee several years back. He actually did a webcast from my house in the early days of such things. If any of you investigate the music... consider this your warning, it's NOT for everyone. I get embarrassed listening to it if anyone else is even around. But as I said, I've met Tesco, and understand (somewhat) why they did what they did. It was kindofa "lets-see-what-we-can-get-away-with-that-people-will-still-buy" and he still has fans today in fact a NEW DVD COMING OUT!!!! I debated long and hard about even posting this link. I don't want to see ANYTHING from his site here.

You've been warned!!!!!

If you are still curious, and don't want to click, this is an interesting primer. An interview by Metro Times

CS, isn't it amazing how much you can do when you don't have a TV? We didn't for about 10 years and I always had time that I don't have now. Our oldest daughter didn't see a TV for several years and she never really has been interested in TV. Our second grew up with it and watches constantly.

My interests range from opera to Hank Williams, Johnny Winter, Ralph Stanley, Robert Johnson and so on.

I don't really give a toss what people think so admitting things isn't an issue; but in the spirit of the question, I'd respond by saying that I really like Patti Smith and Nina Hagen and those two would certainly raise a few eyebrows if I played their music for some of the people I know..lol

Yeah Mark, TV will waste your life away, but then some people say plunking on a guitar is a waste of time too. But I must say I am proud of my former step-daughter. When her Dad and I got married, she had a fit knowing there would be no TV on the week-ends. But she got used to it, and I'm proud to say she is now 21 years old, in TWO bands, and won't allow a TV in her house!

I'm still trying to think of an artist I'm embarrassed to like, and I can't think of anyone. Some of my church-going friends are surprised that I love Zappa so much, but when I pop on Orchestral Favorites, they forgive me.

Conan O'Brien had George Clinton on last night... Brought back a memory or two.
Not many white folks woulda admitted liking George Clinton and the Funkadelic back in the day...
But it was a helluva show.

And everybody hand you da spliff cuz you da only white boy dere!

They would have the Statue of Liberty, Starships, cross-dressing, and a dude in a diaper.

And pretty cool music...

Guess you had to be there...

Does this work in reverse, or should I have started another thread? All my life I have taken a lot of flack because I never liked the Beatles. I was listening to John Mayall back then, and the Beatles sounded like bubblegum music (even though that term hadn't been invented yet). I still don't really care for them. (Hope I haven't made a lot of enemies here, but I'm used to it.)

Ditto, but as a preteen boy I think I was jealous of all the attention the girls were giving them. I really thought the swooning and fainting and saying you had a toilet seat that John sat on was just plain stupid.
Now they have mosh pits. Stoooopid, except that it gives the guys a chance to grope the girls.

I used to tell them that all the time, although I never thought of that spelling. I bet I had a better chance of pissing people off by saying that in North Dakota or Kansas than you did back East. Except there weren't as many people to hear me.
I've grown to like some Country music, but they would probably say the stuff I like isn't real Country.
OK, I confess. I have always lusted after Dolly Parton. Or parts of her.

Cliff, I don't like what they call cOuntry music nowadays either. But I do like the old stuff - Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Patsy Cline. It's a good thing too, because I have a "coffee crew" in the shop almost every morning who plays that stuff. (And I play my banjo along with them.)

My tastes run from Gregorian chant through Praetorius through the 3 B's, Haydn and Handel through Strauss (both J's and R) through Ives and Shostakovich, Bernstein and Berlin to contemporary Christian. Would you believe...Josh Turner? (The video for "Long Black Train" blew me outa the water...)

Cliff, I've never been a big country fan either, but I have always loved the Red Headed Stranger album by Willie, And lots of stuff by Hank Sr. and Emmylou, especially her album Luxury Liner.

Go figure. I like Bad Brains and Fugazi, but when it's country, I gotta have it twangy. I've also got Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant on my ipod.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've been looking at this list of artists we "would rather not admit the fact?" we are fans of... and I see a LOT of artists I think are great would happily admit. Neal Diamond, ABBA, Patti Smith, Patsy Cline, 5th Dimension, Peter Paul and Mary, Michael McDonald Doobies, The Tubes, King's X, all great stuff. Why would anyone feel funny admitting to listening to these?
