help
my 16 year old nephew just called me. He has a pickup gig on Saturday afternoon and the guitar player he was using is not going to make it (apparently he is going to an iron madien concert) anyway the kid was begging me to fill in at the gig. I really don't want to do it but don't see any way out.

I am looking for some cool tunes to do with these kids hopefully easy ones to learn since we will have only one reheasal. (did i say the gig was saturday)

I need your suggestions
so far I have
sunshine of your love
gloria
purple haze
20th century boy
house of the rising sun
and my mind is blank.
remember these are teenage kids into classic rock. so I need tunes that are easy to do and good for on stage.

if you have any suggestions let me know and better yet if you have lyrics and tabs e mail them to me.

thanks

AC/DC? C'mon, there's nothing easier than Highway to Hell, Hell's Bells, or Have a Drink on Me.

Lynard Skynard is also a good choice, but you really want more guitars.

A little psychedelia? Pictures of Matchstick Men, some Small Faces, maybe some Animals.

I can almost tell how old you guys are by seeing what you think is "classic" rock.
How about Smoke On the Water or anything by Bachman, Turner Overdrive. If you want to jump ahead 10 years, do you suppose they'd go for any Eagles songs?

The same thing happened to me a few years ago. My son asked me to sit in on a set in his band when one of their guitarists took ill at a club in San Diego. I knew none of their alternative (and all original) songs, but they stuck to the basic rock progressions which they jotted down for me during the pre-set break, and I managed to get by. Plus, the music was so loud and the audience was so stoned I doubt that it made any difference.

Anything Eagles would be good, and easy.

John Mellancamp (is that how it's spelled?) - Jack & Diane. More on the "classic rock" side.

Or, if you're going way off the deep end, put on a scary black wig, crank your guitar past the safe zone, scream into the microphone, and pretend you're Steven Tyler.

I think Al and I are talking about the same thing when we say "classic rock". It should be at least 30 years old.

Most 16 year olds describe classic rock as Green Day, Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, Social Distortion, Stray Cats, Smithereens, etc. At least around my house. That other stuff everyone is mentioning here is referred to as "hippie music".

Mother by Danzig is a pretty god dang easy rock song. Although I hate them, I'd say Ac/Dc is the best bet.

Why not call him up and ask him what they know or something?

Here's that annoying new guy again...
Ultimate Guitar Tabs Archive. 200,000+ Guitar Tabs, etc.... This is where I get all kindsa stuff that I am not talented enough to play! They've got everything, almost.

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

Looking at the list again... If you wanna be weird, put on an orange mullet wig, some leotard, and do Ziggy! (Stardust, not Marley) Ziggy went too far, but man, could he play Guitar! Or fall black into old Punk. Ramones!
"If you play more than three chords, you are just showing off!"
GangGreen, Samhain, Circle Jerks, Butthole Surfers, Holymen, Minutemen, Vasco de Gama, Echo & the Bunny-men. Good names, crappy bands.

Actually (keeping with Danzig), Glenn Danzig from the Misfits has a really, really good voice. Even in the Misfits. His solo stuff was awesome voice and guitar wise... for the first two albums. Then he sucked it up hardcore.

Gosh, I was always of the opinion that punk was crappy musicians with even crappier voices. I must admit though, it is a small step up from rap, which is basically rappy musicians with even rappier voices.

I must have a few years on you I guess.

WARNING: This post is Scatter brained midnight dribble.

It's not just you Jason. Let me start out with the only defense I've found. There are only two punk bands that're good, Misfits, and Ramones(both from the 70's). The only good rap song is Rappers Delight which is also from the seventies.

Now to my point; The punk today... is not punk. The Rap today, is not music. It's poetry to a beat probably created by pre school children pressing random buttons. Not music.

Zappa... now THAT'S music!

That is one of the most succinctly put descriptions I've ever heard...how old are you again? :D

Actually, I have heard some "punk" musicians who have a lot of talent. I don't care at all for the voices or the lyrics, which do make me want to bang my head against the wall, while imagining myself as an angry 12-year old boy trapped in an older body...

I'm rapidly closing on 30, and even I can appreciate that most music these days sucks. Country, which I grew up on, isn't the same these days. When the top 5 a few weeks ago included Keith Urban (Australian pop-country), a horrible song from some red-neck wanna-be, and #1 was by Bon Jovi...let's just say that it's lost something in recent years.

Moreover, the "pop/soft rock" genre of the 80's and 90's is gone, replaced by cheasy teenage drama queens in slutty clothing pretending to be able to sing. Whatever happened to Gloria Estefan and Peter Cetera?

Hey, Al, back on topic, how about something from Chicago?

I never thought that I would MISS punk rock. But my boss and I were riding in the work van, I was seeking music on the radio. And could find NOTHING worth listening to. Finally settled on the Country station. That bad! What happened to the Rock-n-Roll Legacy that we wanted to leave the next generation?

Uriah Heap - The Wizard's Birthday,(album) any song.
Bad Company
Tom Petty (pinch yer nose)
Hope you've decided something. Saturday's comin' quick!

"Helpless" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

D - A- G progression-- over and over and over and over and.........

And for all of its almost(?) mind-numbing simplicity, it's still one of the greatest songs ever written.

"C'mon out to NYC this week for the final week of operation for CBGB's"

I remember The Police openned for some local acts there. They stank then, too. I went for the Ramones. Great 2 minute songs. Say yer peace, then move on. At Gilley's Pub (Bleeker St & 5th Ave.) John Lennon, playing with David Peel & the Lower East Side, (bought us a coupla quarts of Ballentine Ale). And I'm surprised that CBGB's didn't burn down too... But Vomit and Beer don't burn well. Classy place, two blocks from the Bowery Mission. YIPPIE Headquarters, two blocks the other way. Good Location. Damn, I'm old...

So "alpep", did you try Ultimate Guitar? Time's a-wastin'

Hey you typed your song list while I was typing this. It looks real good. Rock the House.

we did the gig today.
it was a blast.
totally unorganized. played on the top of a flatbed truck that still had a ton of mortar residue on it. No one thought to sweep it off.
The generator was almost louder than the PA LOL.
what fun.

we played
20th century boy t rex
wild thing the troggs
purple haze hendrix

girl singer sang along to
Let's give em something to talk about
killer voice I told my nephew she needs to be in the band

came back did 2 more
all right now free
sunshine of your love cream

here are some pics

me with my hamer monaco superpro which is currently my main guitar.

here is how we looked on the truck

Tim my nephew on bass and vocals and Vinny on drums. Vinny is a great drummer he will be killer in a few years.

solo shot of timmy and his Hamer import velocity bass. A killer value for this korean made bass.

some kid was wearing a gorilla costume with the first band so we decided to call our band "we don't need no stinkin gorillas"

no current future gigs scheduled.

oh I forgot to mention. the crowd loved us.

With the proper cap, longer hair and a beard, Vinny could be the next Alpep!

Great that you helped out your nephew and that you all had fun. He will remember that for the rest of his life.

Nice, we got pics... Glad you had fun! And, of course a female singer would be good. If given a choice a looking at a few ugly dudes.... Nice clear day. Good choice of songs. Happy for you. Nice wood on that git-fiddle.

I knew you guys would pull it off, Al. And sometimes the panic just seems to add a little adrenaline - which isn't always a bad thing. Glad you guys had fun.

I was laughing the whole time we did the gig. My only concern was that we played songs that were easy and we could all pull off at a moments notice.
it worked out well.
