my 16 year old nephew just called me. He has a pickup gig on Saturday afternoon and the guitar player he was using is not going to make it (apparently he is going to an iron madien concert) anyway the kid was begging me to fill in at the gig. I really don't want to do it but don't see any way out.
I am looking for some cool tunes to do with these kids hopefully easy ones to learn since we will have only one reheasal. (did i say the gig was saturday)
I need your suggestions
so far I have
sunshine of your love
gloria
purple haze
20th century boy
house of the rising sun
and my mind is blank.
remember these are teenage kids into classic rock. so I need tunes that are easy to do and good for on stage.
if you have any suggestions let me know and better yet if you have lyrics and tabs e mail them to me.
thanks |

Lynard Skynard is also a good choice, but you really want more guitars.
A little psychedelia? Pictures of Matchstick Men, some Small Faces, maybe some Animals. |

How about Smoke On the Water or anything by Bachman, Turner Overdrive. If you want to jump ahead 10 years, do you suppose they'd go for any Eagles songs? |

I knew none of their alternative (and all original) songs, but they stuck to the basic rock progressions which they jotted down for me during the pre-set break, and I managed to get by. Plus, the music was so loud and the audience was so stoned I doubt that it made any difference. |

John Mellancamp (is that how it's spelled?) - Jack & Diane. More on the "classic rock" side.
Or, if you're going way off the deep end, put on a scary black wig, crank your guitar past the safe zone, scream into the microphone, and pretend you're Steven Tyler. |

Ultimate Guitar Tabs Archive. 200,000+ Guitar Tabs, etc.... This is where I get all kindsa stuff that I am not talented enough to play! They've got everything, almost.

Looking at the list again... If you wanna be weird, put on an orange mullet wig, some leotard, and do Ziggy! (Stardust, not Marley) Ziggy went too far, but man, could he play Guitar! Or fall black into old Punk. Ramones!
"If you play more than three chords, you are just showing off!"
GangGreen, Samhain, Circle Jerks, Butthole Surfers, Holymen, Minutemen, Vasco de Gama, Echo & the Bunny-men. Good names, crappy bands. |

It's not just you Jason. Let me start out with the only defense I've found. There are only two punk bands that're good, Misfits, and Ramones(both from the 70's). The only good rap song is Rappers Delight which is also from the seventies.
Now to my point; The punk today... is not punk. The Rap today, is not music. It's poetry to a beat probably created by pre school children pressing random buttons. Not music.
Zappa... now THAT'S music! |

Actually, I have heard some "punk" musicians who have a lot of talent. I don't care at all for the voices or the lyrics, which do make me want to bang my head against the wall, while imagining myself as an angry 12-year old boy trapped in an older body...
I'm rapidly closing on 30, and even I can appreciate that most music these days sucks. Country, which I grew up on, isn't the same these days. When the top 5 a few weeks ago included Keith Urban (Australian pop-country), a horrible song from some red-neck wanna-be, and #1 was by Bon Jovi...let's just say that it's lost something in recent years.
Moreover, the "pop/soft rock" genre of the 80's and 90's is gone, replaced by cheasy teenage drama queens in slutty clothing pretending to be able to sing. Whatever happened to Gloria Estefan and Peter Cetera?
Hey, Al, back on topic, how about something from Chicago? |

I remember The Police openned for some local acts there. They stank then, too. I went for the Ramones. Great 2 minute songs. Say yer peace, then move on. At Gilley's Pub (Bleeker St & 5th Ave.) John Lennon, playing with David Peel & the Lower East Side, (bought us a coupla quarts of Ballentine Ale). And I'm surprised that CBGB's didn't burn down too... But Vomit and Beer don't burn well. Classy place, two blocks from the Bowery Mission. YIPPIE Headquarters, two blocks the other way. Good Location. Damn, I'm old...
So "alpep", did you try Ultimate Guitar? Time's a-wastin'
