Location: illinois | here's my question.
i'm just starting to get into fingerstyle guitar (michael hedges, kaki king, justin king, etc.) and i'm considering saving up for an adamas. my current guitar is a gibson b-15 from 1969. (small, all mahogany, not really suited to my slap technique.) right now, i'm thinking of saving up for a 2080. any other recommendations for loud whumping noises and a left hand hanging over the neck? |

I think you'd also have to consider the 1581 original or reissue.

Location: Bluffton, SC | The Ute would be a great choice. Not perfect, in my eyes, only because I just can't see myself slapping away at that nice a guitar. That said, the 12 fret gives it a projection that you just gotta hear.
Well, on second thought, maybe it is perfect. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Saw Preston Reed slapping away last night on his Adamas. He has some sort of cover over some of the upper bout sound holes, or maybe they just never were cut in. He also played a box guitar that had an extra pick guard on the upper bout where he slapped it. |

Location: Chehalis, Washington | Definitely check out the U681, or the new 1680 Adamas slothead. Both should be right up your alley for style and sound, and both will take a beating a lot better than any box guitars! If you like all the bells & whistles, the 1680 has the new VIP preamp and some other features, for a mere $1000 more... |

Location: 6 String Ranch | On Preston's the holes were never cut in. Why you want to slap it? You got 10 fingers and that's plenty, or should be. |

Location: south east Michigan | When BrianT & I play Pretty Woman I use two fingers to tap out the beat during the intro. The texured Adamas top feels 10 times more drum like than a spruce top. I have to remember to tap lighter with the UTE. I'm afraid I could put my fingers right through the top. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Preston Reed played a couple songs on a box guitar and tapped the bottom on it. It sounded like tapping a pencil on a desk. When he did the same thing on his Adamas, it sounded like a drum. If you like a full percussion sound, go for the Adamas.
The other thing I noticed was that he spent some time futzing and tuning all the other guitars, but just picked up the Adamas and played it. Go to his website, prestonreed.com and I think you'll be sold on the Adamas. |

Location: East Wenatchee, WA | I beg to differ with some of you guys. I have the 2080 and the W597 (mid bowl) and the W597 is much more percussive when tapped or thumped with the thumb than the 2080. The 2080 top feels thicker or more firmly braced for some reason. First time I played the CVT it was more like having a deep tom tom with a trigger on it. Deep, crisp and loud when I use my thumb to whump it up a bit. 2080 doesn't do that very well.
I can't speak to the the deep bowls, but the 597 is even louder than my Ovation 1537 when it comes to drumming and slapping the top. |

Location: East Wenatchee, WA | P.S. and yes, you could call it rather self-serving since I am selling a W597, but before writing it off as biased in one direction or another, try finger tapping or thumping a CVT and compare it to the deeper bowls at least. It beats my 2080 but I have not done this with the Ute or any of the true deep bowl Adamii. Only making my point about the 2080. |

My comparison experience is with an AD-II. |
