Location: Michigan | Hey lets hear some stories of anyone having an encounter with a Celebrity .
Maybe a Rock Star /Movie Star / Sports Star / ??? Porn Star ???( PG only please )
Slipkid ,, maybe you could tell us what else you use that coconut bra for other than Ovation encounters??
Maybe we will find the guy that played the drums for the WHO when they had a person from the audience play the drums for them one night.
My encounters were having Alice Cooper wear a hat of mine during a concert ( DETROIT )that I thru on stage at a concert back in the 70s .
A walk by and a hello from Edgar Winter & Rick Derringer backstage 70s ( DETROIT ) also
I got to meet & shake George Foremans hand in ( LAS VEGAS ) in the late the 90s.
Now I see Uncle Kracker & his wife a half a dozen or so times a year at the local (Suburb of DETROIT) watering hole & restaraunt by my house.
????????What about you ????????? |

This was kinda funny but not representative of many of the encounters I had.
I was mindlessly walking down the asile at the Namm show when security pushed me out of the way, i turned to be face to face with Paul Stanley of Kiss in full makeup. All I could do was laugh, which I think was not the reaction he was looking for at all.
Miles has a real funny one concerning Chris Squire. |

I imagine a lot of celebrities would just brush you aside or evade you. But there was Bob Seger having a beer in a club just enjoying himself and talking to people. I still think he showed a lot of class. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | Back when I traveled a lot I met Joe Foreman in a Las Vegas elevator and got invited back up to his penthouse suite....his bodyguard on the elevator made him look small!!!!
I met Mohammed Ali at the Tulsa airport and chatted with him for about 20 minutes while he was waiting for his people to pick him up.
Also met Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns at the airport in Las Vegas.
Old timers....I hung out with Mark Volman of the Turtles (and Flo & Eddie), met all the members of the Guess Who (my group was the opening act for them at several venues when they toured the south), Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders and many more in a purely passing encounter type of thing.
Later in life, my wife and I used to be big supporters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and through that association we became good friends with many "B" list actors and soap stars.....and a few "A" list at the time. Most "A" list celebrities were very wary of meeting and/or getting close to new people (probably for obvious reasons) while most of the "B" list were wonderful and engaging folks with marvelous sense of humors and would actually go out of their way to be nice and often become a longtime friend.
Since my son is now graduating and persuing a career in stage and film, I am hoping that some of the past friendships might turn out to be beneficial. |

Met Johnny Cash a County fair in 1959. He was between shows. Also met Luther Perkins at the same time.
Met Jim Reeves in a department store a couple of years before he died in a plane crash.
Since I've moved to Tennesse and have worked at Dollywood for the past 12 years I,ve met a bunch.
Merle Haggard, Steve Warnier, Marty Stuart, Rex Allen Jr., Jim Ed Brown, George Hamilton IV, Johnny Russell, Jim Glaser, and since I work at The Southern Gospel Music Association I've met a lot of Southern Gospel Singers and groups.
And last but not least,(I can't wait for the comments), Dolly Parton. :D
Every one of these people was very down to earth
and friendly. |

Talked to country/folk singer Suzy Bogguss at The Ark folk club in Ann Arbor, MI this last Friday evening!!!! It's common for artists at The Ark to do a meet-and-greet and autographs after their show. Have also talked to singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer and acoustic blues player Rory Block similarly.

Location: Tennessee | I've had a bunch. The best one though was at LAX. My daughters were about 3 & 5 at the time and were huge "A Team" fans. As we were waiting at our gate to board our outbound flight, the plane came in and passengers started deplaneing. One of the first off was Mr.T, in all his regalia. Needless to say the girls were awestruck ... and Mr. T stopped for a moment, got down on his haunches and gave them the BA schtick. My daughter just looked at him and asked "Did they knock you out to get you on that plane, 'fraidy cat?". The entire boarding area, including Mr. T, erupted hysterically. BTW, he was a genuinely nice guy. |

Location: Bluffton, SC | Like most everyone else, I've had a run in or two with a couple of celebrities but the one I remember most is this one. My dad's been in the auto racing game, professionally, for over 50 years now and has introduced me to some of the biggest names in auto racing including Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, AJ Foyt, Sterling Marlin and others. Well, once upon a time, he takes his young son of 14 (me) down Pit Row at Daytona. It's only a practice day, a solid week before the big race, and he wants to be a Big Guy to his kid. He walks up to a guy he has met several times in the pits and says to him, "Mr. Newman, good to see you. I would love you to meet my son. He's a huge fan."
Paul Newman looks at my dad and starts verbalizing a blue streak about "F*&! *&%@!&%^!!!...you gotta be an f&^$#!'in idiot to see that I'm not working here...take your kid and get the hell outta here..."
Now I know my dad's been around racing longer than most, and almost certainly longer than that jerk, and says to him "No problem, Mr Newman. Please pardon the interruption and feel free to get back to your coffee and paper while the guys work on your car. Hope you finish safely next Sunday. My son understands completely."
Have never seen a Newman movie since and won't buy the popcorn or salad dressing either. |

He was returning from a show and having coffee at the airport restaurant sitting at the counter. I knew it was him immediately, and sat in the empty seat at the counter next to him. I told him what an honor it was to sit next to him, ordered coffee, and struck up a conversation. I kept trying to get him to share his thoughts on everything by making small talk. We talked for about an hour, while he was waiting for his flight. Interesting conversation with a founder of Rock and Roll that I'll never forget. |

Location: Michigan | Interesting WeaserP , I work for a distributor of PPG products & in the 80s-90s they use to be the top sponser of the Indy car racing circut. Paul was 1/2 owner of the Indy car Newman Haus racing team .About the Paul Newman thing is he was always like that when he was racing. My girlfreind was a huge fan of his so whenever we went down to any of the races we always had preffered passes to get into any area of the racetrack and the one thing that we were told was if you meet Paul Newman do not ask him about anything but racing or he will totaly ignore you or get you thrown out of his area .He is well known for becoming very stand offish to the public when he is at a racetrack .He supports his claim that all of his time would be spent signing autographs & talking to people about his movie star status .We did get to see him a couple of times but I wasn't about to approach him just for the reason that you stated. Location: Bluffton, SC | Yeah, I can buy that if you're in the throws of a big race. Bottom line is it's big money. Again, I grew up around it so we had a fairly good idea of what an ok time to approach someone was vs. a lousy tme and based on others that dad introduced me to, he was a pretty good judge of that.
Given my experience, anyone who would treat a guy like that, especially in front of his kid, is a jerk and always will be. Just one opinion though. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | I was playing in the Vinny golf tournament in Nashville. Our fivesome had the celibrity Randy Owens, singer from Abalama. The other three were fat corporatelookin types. Randy had just shaved off his beard and I still had mine. All day long the people would come up to the group, check us out and then come to me and ask for an autograph. Randy just about pissed himself laughing. By the back nine people would approach him and he'd send them over to me and sit back and laugh. The last few holes there was this small group of girls following us on every shot. When it was over they approached and asked if I would sign their program book. I said OK and turned to the Ovation Ad page and signed Bill Kaman. They said thanks and I could hear them when we were about 30 feet away "But his name's BEAL !?!" Randy and I were laughing so hard, glad we were in the cart so we wouldn't have fallen down. |

Location: NJ | Last year, I was at a wedding out on Long Island.
I'm walking thru the lobby of the banquet hall, and I see Jerry Stiller there standing by himself wearing a tux and a RedSox cap. I shook his hand, told him I'd been a big fan of his for many years, and that Festivus was my favorite holiday. He got a big laugh and was very gracious (tho he couldn't hear too well).
As I turn and walk away from him, Ben Stiller (whom I can't stand) is walking in, pulling off his rain coat. We make eye-contact, and he gets that "oh shit, he's recognized me" look on his face.
I walked up to him and say "Hey! Check it out! that's Jerry Stiller over there!!" and walk away.
Totally rattled 'im. |

When I was with Mark travelling in my car ( I gave him a lift from the race circuit to a game of cricket), I asked him how often he practised, as I said that I played. He said not very often. I also told him about seeing Dire Straits on the Old Grey Whistle Test TV program, being their first TV apperarance, (Only UK people will under stand this)and saying that next day, I went into the record store in a place call Havant and no one had ever heard of Dire Straits. He laughed and said he used to live close by and new the record store.
Mark is a great guy and has a very nice Maserati 300S (listen to the new album). Nick Mason I have known from racing for 13 years, again a very genuine guy. |

I drove up from Univ of Oregon to Univ of Portland for a prom...Buddy Rich and band were performing. My date lost her contact lens in the middle of the dance floor, shut down the entire prom while a number of us got down on our knees to find the lens. Course, they had to turn on all of the lights. Later, one of the other gals took my date into the restroom and found it...fallen inside her dress. We may have been looking for only about 15 minutes but it seemed like an hour. Of course, everyone including Rich, knew that it was my date. Heck, it wasn't my fault. Later, Rich came over and said he'd been thrown out of a lot of joints but never shut down by a contact lens. So, later I took my date to a Pizza Parlor. Evening ended up early. Heck, I had long drive back to Eugene. |

| I met some interesting folks in Portland on the 19th of August. It was right near a day-glow flower painted on the street. Someone offered me a drink and I slipped into a dream... after that, memories are very fragmented and strange. There were all these odd shaped guitars and even odder shaped heads... I think someone must have been famous. |

I said hello to Jimi Hendrix once and he said hello right back. For the English members - this was in Watford Gap Services in 1967. He was barely famous in England in those days.
And obviously the Bill Clinton thing, no matter how many times he denies it. |

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | I've met/seen some stars, but have never been star struck. Until...
Around 1990, there was this relatively unknown (at the time) model that I randomly saw in a Spiegal catalog that just caught my attention. Ok, so I became a mildly obsessed young lad. An artist at the time, I painted and drew several portraits of her that adorned my apartment walls.
Then, about 2 years later, I'm standing in line (with my girlfriend at the time) for a hamburger at Six Flags Great Adventure, and I turn around to see this very same model, Roberta Chirko, and several of her model friends standing behind me. Panic struck, I freaked out for the first star struck time. Do I say hi? Will my girlfriend, who knows of my sick little fantasy obsession, get pissed if I do? What do I say?...
Before I knew it, I had turned around and in an out-of-body state of bliss and watched myself say "Roberta?" She, and all her friends paused, looking at me in puzzlement as to how I would possibly know who she was. Then, in a moment of completely pathetic, yet ecstatic bumbling idiot-drool, I managed to get the words out, "I paint pictures of you!"
Great first impression....("WARNING: FREAK STALKER ALERT!"). Probably the biggest dumb-ass moment of my life. Yeah, so...I'll forever be in therapy to get over this one.
Turns out that after I politely walked away (after attempting to form even more incoherant babble slightly resembling syllables), my too-cool-for-words girlfriend remained behind to explain that I actually did paint some good portraits of her, and asked if there was a contact number of her modelling agency so that I could forward photos of the paintings to her. Roberta did give a number...and rightfully a bogus one.
And the moral of the story is...well, there is absolutely nothing moral about it-except the deeds of my rightously cool girlfriend (I probably should have hung onto her, huh? Dumb-ass moment #2).
The model, Roberta, ended up marrying the long time bass player for John Mellencamp. 2-3 years ago I contacted her via the web, retold her of the encounter. She emailed me back, remembering the moment, and requested that I send her digital images of the paintings. I sent them and never heard again.
Such is life.
Excuse me while I plunge an icepick into my temple. |

I was sitting in local restaraunt at lunch time, and had finished my lunch when a couple came in and sat at the table across the aisle from mine. The girl was very attractive. The guy was hiding underneath a baseball cap. When the waitress greeted them, the guy looked up long enough that I saw it was Lyle Lovett. I wonder what it is about him that attracts beautiful women like a magnet.

Location: San Angelo, Texas | I play golf with Tommy Lee Jones a couple of times a year. He ranches out close to our place. I've never been star struck, so that put him at easy real quick as I was explaining to his hired guy that the goats had broken through the fence...again...anf he needed to reinforce it....he walked up, smiled and asked what teh problem was...I told him, and he said they would take care of it soon. I told him it better be REAL soon or there would soon be a BIG goat BBQ. He laughed, offered me a beer and asked if I played golf. Fence got fixed, and I play golf a couple of times a year with him...
I've met most of the Texas Country scene guys, and work with some of them on a semi-regular basis...Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Cory Marrow and a few others. Also see Steven Curtis Chapman a couple of times a year, Chris Tomlin more frequently, a few other on the Christian scene fairly regularly. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | And then there was the time that Bill Cosby was at the gas station waiting for his Gulfstream to get back from Charlotte so he sat behind the counter and answered the phones for an hour.
And Harrison Ford brought in his Helicopter with a mechanical problem so he just went straight to the maint. hangar, landed and asked for some tools. My guy gave him the tool box and went back to work and it dawned on him 1/2 hour later so he walks bace and says, "Is your name Harrison?". He says "Yes" and my guy says, "I thought so" and went back to fixing the plane. When Harry gets his mechanical fixed the Maint Forman comes up to him and says, "I got a Cessna over that that needs the motor pulled, if you're not doing anything this afternoon." Harry smiles and says, "I'd love to, but you know, I get the same flat rate fee for all my work. Can you cover that?" Laughs and hand shakes and pictures with the women followed and he flew off.
The best was getting Jimmy Buffets autograph. It was on the American Express card where he paid for 750 gallons, full retail. He was in town for a Democratic fund raiser.
Not to think that this is anti-Democrat, we charged Air Force One the max we could as well.
For the record: Buffet did not get french toast. |

Location: cincinnati, ohio | Had a handful-- most of them with musical idols of mine. I have interviewed David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Gordon Lightfoot for a local music publication I worked on in the '90's -- all phone interviews (on tape), but fun nonetheless.
Met Crosby and Nash at the Blind Lemon, an upscale tavern with live music in Mt. Adams, which is a hoity toity community overlooking downtown Cincinnati and the Ohio River. Whenever Crosby, Stills, and/or Nash come to town in any configuration, they end up here. Owner Eddie Shephard is a dead ringer for Graham Nash, and when that was brought to the band's attention, Eddie and CSN became fast friends. Knowing this, I grabbed a guitar playing buddy the night before a CSN concert at Riverbend, and we went to the Lemon hoping to do a little stargazing. It was a gorgeous summer night, and we were outside listening to the musician. Suddenly this lanky, unassuming dude walks down the steps in the shadows of a stone archway and goes to a pay phone (!) in a little alcove carved into the wall. It was Graham Nash; I knew what he looked like, and a moment later there was no question when he was joined by a lumbering bear of a man with a Walrus mustache-- the Croz. We chatted with them for a few moments; they actually remembered I'd interviewed them a couple of years earlier. Very cool guys, just folks.
In the 1970's, there was a club in Clifton across from the University of Cincinnati main campus called the Family Owl. It was THE place to play acoustic music in town. The best local talent played there, and national and regional acts, established and up and coming, would stop there to play. John Denver played there, as did U. Utah Phillips and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Our band Rosewood was in the rotation at the club. There was another band that performed regularly there, too, called Melange. GREAT instrumentalists! We'd jam with them a lot. Their lead singer and rhythm guitarist was awesome. He was from right across the river in Covington, Kentucky. His name was Craig Fuller. You may have heard of him; started this little band called Pure Prairie League. Wrote this song called "Amie." We knew him when...
But the best encounter ever was at a bigger club called Reflections, which was about two blocks south of the Family Owl. One night we were there to listen to a band that had just finished their first album, which was about a month and a half away from release. They had been doing some grassroots touring to establish themselves, and they were winding it down. They were incredible--two guitars, bass and drums and four part vocal harmonies that made your hair stand on end. A lot of acoustic-oriented stuff with country overtones. We spent most of the night picking our jaws up off the floor; they were that good. When they took a break, we went over to thank them for the incredible music and offered to buy them drinks. They said they had a tab and bought us drinks instead. They were young guys, about our age, and when we introduced ourselves, I said to the drummer, a skinny kid with a cloud of curly hair, "We're in a band, too." We talked shop for a while, and stayed the rest of the night to listen to the music and get blown away.
The next time this band came to town they played at Riverfront Stadium in front of almost 60,000 screaming fans (including us). That band, of course was the Eagles-- and I told Don Henley, "We're in a band, too." Possibly the most arrogant and presumptuous statement I've ever made in my life! It was a lot of fun, though.
Oh, and Don--- I'm STILL in a band! |

The only other celebrity encounter I've been involved with was in the London Underground about 10 years ago when I had long scruffy hair and a goatee. A local drunk screamed 'Billy' at me and staggered over to give me a huge smelly hug and proceeded to tell me that I was the funniest f***ing fella on the telly.
He thought I was Billy Connolly - the Scottish comedian.
He was VERY drunk.
(BTW, do you yanks know who Billy Connolly is?) |

At the gas station we also had Bon Jovi come through, Jon got right on the phoneas he walked off the plane so that he would be too busy for anybody but Richie and the boys were fine. Remembered me from my previous life.
Elton John played Jacksonville and ordered everyone away from the plane, had the limo go out to it and then snuck into it. Wouldn't wave or look at anyone. We charged then $100 for washing their dishes.
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill flew in for one of the football ganes, Tennessee won and someone in their group stole our Florida flag from the flag pole out in front. They also forgot a really nice pair of binoculars that are still very functional today.
Bill Graham used to come through for treatments at the Mayo Clinic from time to time. A really nice and gental man.
Natrina (tennis) and her wife got stuck there for a couple of hours, change of flight plans or something. She was quiet but nice. |

- my grandfather was an excellent golfer - got as far as being a teaching pro. When I was 8 or 9, he took me golfing with him... our partners were Whitey Ford and Phil Rizzuto. Being from NY and a big Yankee fan, that was amazing!
- I met another ex-Yankee - Paul Blair - at a bowling alley.
- When I was in college, the last time I was in a band, we opened and closed a dance marathon at my old high school. The band that preceeded us at the closing was Twisted Sister - the bad news was that we pretty much only new the songs that we were playing at the dance and Twisted Sister played about 1/2 of them before we got on... OUCH!
- And last but not least... my nephew just completed filming a part in the upcoming season of the Sopranos (He's 8). He plays a kid at a birthday party for one of the mobsters kids.
That's all I've got! |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | and then there was the time I met Tyra Banks at a high fashion female clothing store and she kept coming out and modeling different dresses and asking me (the only male in the store) which ones I liked best. She said she was flying out to attend a ball that weekend in Poland and needed something formal to wear.
My wife kept coming out at different times while trying to find an outfit for a Make-A-Wish gala we were attending and asked if I was entertaining myself. I told her about the beautiful woman who kept asking my opinion so my wife hung around until she came back out. My wife recognized her immediately and they chatted a bit before Tyra picked a beautiful light purple outfit that went just amazing with her skintone.
and yes....she was incredibly beautiful in person with flawless skin and a wonderful personality. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Met and jammed with Dan Fogelberg at a campsite in Mesa Verde National Park in the early 70's. He walked up after hearing me play at a campfire and introduced himself. He had a contract at the time, but was otherwise unknown. I only remember that he had a funny name, could sing really well, knew a lot of songs, but didn't impress me as a great guitarist at the time. Of course, I kept my Ovation and loaned him my wife's cheap Yamaha.
Met and jammed with Kenny Loggins while serving in the National Guard in the late 60's in Los Angeles. He had a friend (a fellow writer) who was in our unit and brought him out to jam with a bunch of us while we pulling an all-nighter.
Met a bunch of folks while touring with Danny Kaye under contract with CBS in the early 60's. I was a pre-teen tap dancer and none of the celebrities made much impression on me except the surf bands of the day (Ventures, Sufaris, etc.). Annette Funicello was closer in age to my mother than me. Red Skelton had a studio next to our rehearsal studio at CBS. He was very kind to kids. All I really remember is the stage hands telling me that it was o.k. to speak to him if he was walking to his dressing room (from the studio stage), but to stay away from him if he was walking to the stage because he had a tendency to barf.
We were performing so much back then that we meeting celebrities meant little to us. I was way more interested in meeting Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. |
