Just curious as to what strings other people use on their Ovations.

I know they come with D'Addario EXP16's, but does everyone use them?

Ah yes....the required question for those new to the OFC.
Some will say to just do a search on it and yes...you will have a couple good hours of reading. But I don't mind banging out my answer.
After test driving many brands I've ended up with Martin Marquis lights or medium-lights. They last long enough and IMO...complement the "Ovation" sound.
I don't go with the Elixer theory of sacrificing some "new string sound" for longevity. The Marquis give me a good 4 to 6 weeks of service.

D'Addario EXP16s or EJ16s on my 6-strings, EJ38s on my 12-strings.

I'll put in another vote for the Martin Marquis. Haven't tried the Martin SP yet. The D'Add and a couple other brands just sounded a tad dull compared to the Marquis.

I paid $15 D'ADD's exp 12's, sounded great for a week, went back to elixer 12's, sounded better longer. The elixer's feel slippery, which imo, compliments the Ovation feel and playability. I haven't tried the Martins yet, I guess they're next. Back when I had my '84 collector, i used Adamas 1818's only, they sounded great.

Is it just me or is the string squeak really loud with the D'Addario's?

Bobc...hang around long enough and the pattern will become clear.
First...a new member asks about strings. Then, a few posts later he's drawn into asking about string tubes.
And BTW way Bob...we're glad you signed up on the OFC. Being from Pennsylvania, you should pencil in a weekend this coming spring for the Factory Tour in Hartford.

Hey now, be nice...this guy is new and you are going to make him think that anything that Cliff or Jeff W is a bad idea, and I disagree. Why, just earlier in this thread, he asked a legitiment question...

Thank you everyone. I just put a set of Elixer PB nano's on it. It sounds great, and the string squeak is normal now.

I like a little squeak, but those D'Arario's are much too squeaky for me... :)

I see you've found the right place to hang out, you're not going to have any problems around here. These guys(and girls) are great fun and a wealth of mostly wholesome information.

The elixer's, so far, are the ticket for me, they are good for a couple of mos.

I don't know why this keeps coming up, the instructions are CRYSTAL CLEAR (and Greg, as a dealer you should know better). The string tubes are to be removed AFTER threading the string through the bridge. NOT left on permanently. If you leave them in place they do nothing other than deaden the sound. Dave

Nobody uses EXP17s? I think those strings might be a bit heavy for my 1778LX.

I'm a fan of Webstrings' Portland Acoustic (phosphor bronze) strings. I like the D'addarios, but these sound better (to me) last at least as long and are considerably less expensive.
