Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | While not nearly as cool as the Steely Dan concert Al got to see, my wife and I went to the outdoor botanical gardens concert series tonight and saw Air Supply perform.
Russell Hitchcock still has an impressive voice that was in perfect form and pitch all night long and watching Graham Russell play guitar was like watching Pete Townshend back in the day. I was amazed at how he could jump around, pose, and move to the music and make their pop tunes look like heavy rock and roll.
They played about 100-110 minutes and covered all the hits plus some other tunes. I went because they were one of my wife's favorite bands of the 80's but I have to admit I was very impressed by the professonal show they put on. This was not some typical reunion rehash just to make money.
IMHO, all the songs really stood the test of time and sounded very fresh.
I think they said they were going to California next and playing Humprheys in San Diego and then on to Las Vegas.
TONY, BRUCE, FRED, et al.....you should really try to check them out.
GREAT SHOW! |

In all fairness, I did see the ABBA concert special on the PBS membership drive the other night. I actually found it pretty interesting somehow. Pretty high energy show, lots of background stuff I wasn't aware of. Never thought I'd be able to sit through DANCING QUEEN but I made it  |

I never liked these guys, or Kneel LetmechangemynametoDiamond or Kat Litter or any of the rest. BUT, they are professionals. I went to a Kneel Daimond show once, great show but....
Hey, I once even saw John Davidson do a great performance. The music was still shyte but it is nice to watch a professional work. |

I never even broke the wraping on it |

I think I scored more guitar points Saturday when I actually left the NW OFC gathering in time to make it to my mom's 80th Birthday party and play and sing for her.
I've put those points in the bank until I stop by GC on the way home tonight and pick up that 12 string Balladeer. |

I'm rehearsing the "but honey, I just walked in to buy some strings and they gave me this guitar and the other was on sale, so I couldn't pass it up." Makes sense to her when she says it. |

In my experience this only makes them mad where they were once annoyed. Your mileage may vary.
BTW-Good to meet you Mark, let's do it again sometime other than your mothers birthday. |

I'm trying to think of ANY Air Supply song that would be muscular enough to "make them look like heavy rock and roll." I'm failing.
No offense to any true fans of the group, but we always classified them as "wimp rock." It's the kind of drek you would hear on the Delilah radio show today (and if you've ever stumbled across THAT atrocity while changing the dial, you'll run screaming from the room!).

If she wanted to go see Air Supply, I'd take her and enjoy it. Stephen's a smart man. I'd prefer Air Supply over most any of the grunge rock of the 80's. I can't stand concerts where the volume is so high you can't understand any of the lyrics. |

But what I know.....My memory is a little foggy from that era, Rock-n-Roll was the place to be! Although I was dabbling in Country Rock music a little in the early eighties as well :) |

Rick, my point exactly. It was amazing to see Graham Russell performing Pete Townshendish moves to music that you would never think of as rock (wimp or otherwise) but it actually worked and looked pretty cool.
I think the fact that they had a young rockin band probably helped the overall sound as they were the only two old farts on the stage.
but as Bill aptly pointed out, you can have chessy songs and still put out a professional kick ass show. |

This speaks to the major problem in the world today - no one has an original idea. EVERYTHING is a remake, sequel, spin-off, and so on. Even Ovation is "reissuing" their greatest instruments (not bad-mouthing here, just an example).
At last year's superbowl (which was kind of a joke anyway) we were entertained(?) by the Stones, acting VERY 'stoned' indeed, while Mick Jagger took his clothes off...
Top movies for this year included X-men 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, Scary Movie 4 (one has to question why), and I've heard of plans for Indiana Jones 4 and Rocky 6...
If that wasn't enough, a few weeks ago, the Number 1 Country song in the nation was "Who Says You Can't Go Home?" by none other than John Bon Jovi...
Is anyone else confused? |

Location: North Carolina | I always thought Air Supply got a bad rap, as did Manilow, ABBA and a host of other acts that were not dangerous or cool, but could sell a lot of records. And one must admit, they were in the business of selling records. The term "artist" in that business is a misnomer. I'd say these guys did their job. |
