Location: SoCal | Anybody else out there a Steve Goodman fan? I believe Cliff is. I just picked up a dvd of which most was recorded at 2 Austin City Limits shows, one from September 1977 (a month after I left Austin) and the other from 1982. A tremendous talent who died in 1984 from leukemia at age 36. I was just reading thru the Wikipedia entry on him and learned that his ashes are buried under homeplate at Wrigley Field.
I strongly recommend looking for the dvd as well as a double cd, half live and half recorded in the studio. The live recordings are head and shoulders above the studio.
By the way, the cd has the live recording from a tune done in the 1982 Austin City Limits show. If you listen to the cd or watch the dvd, you'll learn the true history of "Freddie and the Fishsticks", which I swiped in CT last May.
The more I listen to Steve Goodman, the more I realize what a hack player and singer I am. He was a great.... |

Location: NJ | There was a really good "Tribute Concert" CD of Steve's music done by various artists that came out a BUNCH of years ago. I think it was recorded at the McCormick Center in Chicago. John Prine, Bonnie Raitt, Arlo Guthrie, David Bromberg, John Hartford, Richie Havens, and a bunch of others . . .
NittyGrittyDirtBand does REALLY good version of "Face on the Cutting Room Floor" . . .
I gotta' find another copy of it. Lost it in the "settlement", and haven't heard it in years . . .
The "Easter Tapes" is another good one. Recorded on an Easter morning at the old WNEW-FM studio here in NY where Steve showed up with an acoustic and played/told stories the whole morning . . .

NAME THAT TUNE...
Steve also wrote, in my opinion, the most popular "sing along" tune of all time.

Location: Flushing, MI | I've just recently re-discovered Steve Goodman. I first heard him on TV many years ago, and was blown away by his solo acoustic guitar playing. Anyone that can sit in a chair, with no band and no backing tracks, and do what he does on a guitar has to be admired. I remember him playing some great slide as well.
Fast forward to just recently, I've heard some great shows by Steve on sugarmegs.org. I hadn't heard him in years, and it was just as enjoyable today as he was way back when.
I also heard about his ashes being buried at Wrigley Field, and I believe it's true. |

Location: SoCal | Watching some of the dvd today while on the Tread Climber, I noticed that in the menu of all the tunes, there's a pic of Steve playing an Ovation Legend... looks like the JL model. |

Location: SoCal | In the video, he was playing one of the small body Gibsons in 1977. In the show taped in the early 80's he was playing something that looked like a gypsy jazz guitar.
Temp insults me every chance he gets... it's one of his few pleasures in life. Which does say something sad about his life..... |

Location: Las Cruces, NM | Steve Goodman WAS the 70's and was some of our reasons to exist. My son went to see him in San Diego, and came back and told me (a rabid Mandolin player) that Jethro Burns was his accompanyist.
