Location: Butte, MT | I have recently started to research a guitar that I have owned for the last 16 years. From what limited info I can find, its an Ultra GP1-S. I am not sure if it is sunburst or cherryburst. The serial number is 10350. I have checked ovationguitars.com and multiple sites from hits on the search engines. If anyone can help me with prices, production runs, and reference info it would help tons. Thanks and lookin forward to your replys. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Do a SEARCH on this forum and you will find plenty of info here on the GP. Lots of members here have or do own them. Prices got inflated awhile back when some metal head was using one, but he gave it up and prices have dropped back to normal. I've owned one and they are pretty nice instruments. Dave |

Dave Well, it's the first time i'm hearing someone call Josh Homme 'some metal head'. I bet you wouldn't like to get a punch in the face from that guy. But yeah, rumours say he's now left with his first, black GP only, having given all others to his friends. However, if you show me how did 'the prices drop back to normal', i will be very grateful. If you have one for sale for 500 or even a 1000, i'll be ecstatic to buy it right away, cuz from what i know, 2000 USD is a miracle, while 3000 USD is the regular price for a GP. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Adam, The last few GP's that sold on ebay went for less than $1500. I wish I knew you last year, I sold my cherryburst GP for $1100. We probably could have struck a better deal. Sorry if I offended your friend Josh. Pointless to debate musical tastes here. You're obviously a Josh fan and I am not. Actually, I thought that band blew dead donkey cabbage (saw them as opening act for Smashing Pumpkins). But that's just my opinion and you'd probably dislike my musical tastes as well. No big deal. By the way, I can take a pretty good punch. Hey, have you looked at the Eastwood GP copies. I don't know much about them but for the money they look pretty good to me. Anyway, keep your eyes open. I think you will find nice GP's definately less than $1500. Take care, Dave |

Location: Lodz, Poland | Thanks for your answer Dave... So i should say - ooops! I guess i made an ass of myself, cuz i wasn't looking hard enough around eBay for it. Too bad. I guess if i sold my vinyl collection, i'd be ready to buy a GP now (about $1500).
And, well, Josh is not my friend, but yeah, back in the day when Qotsa opened for SP, the band could have sucked. But Josh and his GP were responsible for some sound revolution that many folks followed, back in the Kyuss days (early 90s). But yeah, musical tastes are irrelevant, as it is the Ovations that matter here :)
Eastwoods do look good and get rave reviews, but i was thinking of ordering a more or less similar guitar from our great Polish manufacturer - Mayones (cheesy name but great axes, especially basses). Do check them out. A Les Paul copy with a double cutaway, mahogany body with flamed maple top, two Super2s or a Super2 and a SuperDistortion, set mahogany neck, a black or transparent black coat with cream binding... Could cost me approx $1000 and give a similar level of excitement as the GP?

Location: Lodz, Poland | Witkowski? Dave, are you kidding me? That's the name of one of the most famous Polish guitarmakers. Check Witkowski Custom Guitars Website ! He started in 1981, i guess at the same time more or less as the guys at Mayones. So, what's the probability that it's your family? ;)
One more thing for all of you to consider - but please, i don't want anyone to flame me for such a suggestion - but isn't the Cort M520/M600 guitar strinkingly similar to a GP? I mean, the mahogany body with flamed maple top (M600), mahogany set neck and rosewood fingerboard... Shove in a couple of creamtop Super2s and bang - you're with a GP lookalike for very small money. I just can't find any info on weight. Maybe the M series Corts are just thin and light...?
What do you think - anyone ever tried it? I also adore the M900 model, but that's a semihollow. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | I did have a cheap PRS ripoff by Raven that was absoluetly beautifully but the cheap Korean/Taiwan pups were absolutely gruesome and the strings that came on the guitar were more like barbed wired in feel and thickness.
I put some Rio Grande Big Bottom pups in with some 10's, did a setup and intonation and viola....a very good sounding knockoff at 1/4 of the price.
So....maybe a Cort with the proper setup and better pups could be a viable alternative. |

Finns sound like battling turkeys, Czech language sounds like a Polish little children talk and Hungarian? It sounds just as if Mike Patton invented it.
Oh... so what was it that we were talking about? Uh huh... Ultra GP. Well, a great guitar. I have yet to see one in real. But dear MontanaPete - check the stories section at JunkGuitars.com and contact Mr BigBeat, the author of that site. He researched the GPs very hard. |

Hey speaking of staying on topic ... I was in Ann Arbor and found that they have 'Steak & Shake' up there. VERY COOL. I used to go visit my mom in FLA just as a coverup to the fact that they had S&S down there (plus Piggly-Wiggly and a lot of other cool places that never quite made it out to North Mexico). S&S waitress gave me my own S&S hat and personal hairnet. She even let me walk around to the back of the counter for a few seconds. I felt just like the movie "Almost Famous".

The Desert Sessions volumes 1 and 2 are alone worth about $300, cuz they're mint and were pressed only a 1000 each. Qotsa s/t black vinyl was pressed in 2500 pcs, and is worth $150-200. Gamma Ray is worth $75-100 approx, cuz there were only two runs of 1000. Tool Aenima - usually $250, cuz i believe there were only 5000 pressed or so, and it's the most maniacally sought after item of my collection. The Earthlings box is no.55/500, signed by Frank Kozik.
There are also some other rare vinyls worth $30-$50. The cheapest is the Opiate for $10 and the Qotsa 'First' also approx $10-15. |

But i do have a question to you guys - can anyone actually tell me the actual weight of the GP? Or even more, the thickness of the body itself (let's say at the edge, where it's the thinnest). I'm wondering about the difference between the GP and the Cort M520/M600 - i'm beginning to believe it's just much thinner. But i need to find out. |
