Location: Central Massachusetts | Yes, it's true.. for those of you who aren't up to reading all 12 pages of the other thread... it took us over a year, but we finally have a confirmed plan for a NW OFC get-together!
The gathering will take place Saturday, August 19th, 2006 starting at 1:00pm at gh1's house in Portland, Oregon.
Gh1 will be hosting a bbq, and everybody will be bringing their toys for sharing, learning, and jamming. I'm also going to see if we can get the local Ovation rep to make an appearance.
The following people have expressed an interest in attending. If you aren't on the list and think you might show up, please RSVP in this thread so we can plan accordingly.
gh1, dvd, Mark in Boise, fillhixx, JeffreyD, tdeej, MWoody, Waskel, briwilt, seesquare
Thanks to gh1 and his SWMBO for their generous offer to host the event! Thanks to many others for offering to bring recording equipment and interesting guitars. It should be a lot of fun! See you there! |

gh1 - 2 amps, 1537, 1597, etc.
dvd - 2001 Collector's
Mark in Boise - 1537
JeffreyD - Barbetta 23C combo amp, 1537, W597, Carvin DC400
tdeej - "a few" guitars, usb recording interface
Waskel - Adamas 1581
fillhixx - BR-8 digital recorder, Balladeer, bastardized Thunderhead
I've never seen a breadwinner or deacon in person, so if somebody could bring one of those, I'd love to see one up close. I'd also like to see how a 1624 feels... Waskel, could you bring yours? |

We should also get pokeypup and it seemed like there was someone from central Oregon, edensharvest and a few others that haven't posted much lately. |

I'll likely bring my laptop and Firewire box and do some recording of my own. It's always handy for evidence. Don't worry, I won't let it interfere with my fun.
Sounds like Miles may show up too. |

In addition to my modest Ovations, I also have a modest Fender Frontman 25 amp I can bring. And I have a mic and 2 mic stands if you think that's necessary.

I'm driving over the 5th alone, but a guitar will fit in the passenger seat. My wife may ride back with me on the 12th or 13th, which means I'd have to leave the guitar somewhere. 1537, 87 Collector's, Folklore, Classic? Your choice. |

It sounds like we'll have a plethora of 1537s anyway, but I could leave the 1537 with Waskel and probably squeeze in the 87 when we haul my daughter and her stuff back to college on the 18th. Or leave the 87 or Folklore with Waskel and bring the other in the SUV. |

We can confirm that the record for the largest guitar ensemble stands at: On May 7, 1994, a gathering of 1,322 guitarists played Taking Care of Business in unison for 68 mins 40 secs in Robson Square, Vancouver, Canada, in an event organised by Music West of Vancouver, Canada.

Location: Central Massachusetts | okay, a couple of options I'll throw out there for you.
"The Urban/NW 23rd Option" --
NW 23rd is a popular shopping district in Northwest Portland.. not too far from where we'll be gathering (15 minutes) --
Hotel: The Inn at Northrup Station My mother-in-law recently stayed at the hotel.. seemed modern, interesting. good location near shopping, nice restaurants.. street car goes right by to connectivity to downtown and elsewhere.
Spa: Dosha -- Dosha has two locations, one downtown near the hotel, and one in the Hawthorne district, not far from the Gh1's. They come highly recommended.
Another Spa option: Rejuvenation Day Spa - a few minutes drive south of downtown (10 minutes-ish) - my wife has been there once and she enjoyed it.
"The Rural Option" --
Hotel & Spa: McMenamin\'s Grand Lodge Hotel & Ruby\'s Spa - McMenamin's is a local brewpub with locations all over town. They like to take over old properties and convert them into interesting places. The Grand Lodge is an old Masonic lodge that has been converted to a hotel, brewpub, theater, spa with soaking pool, frisbee golf course, and who knows what else! It's out at the western edge of the Portland area in Forest Grove, where I live. It's about a 30-35 minute drive to Gh1's if traffic cooperates. 15 minutes to shopping. You're wife can have your car to explore, and I can ferry you to and from the event.
Lots of other options, but just wanted to float those as options. Let me know how I can fine-tune my recommendations.
Other cool destinations in/around Portland for family that would rather be doing something else while we goof off:
Japanese Garden,
Chinese Garden,
Oregon Zoo
Children's Museum
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (including a submarine)
Multnomah Falls / Columbia River Gorge not far east of town.
multiple malls, NO SALES TAX!
people watching / walking / cycling at Waterfront Park or Washington Park |

Edgefield is another of their properties at the eastern edge of town.. a converted "poor farm".. see them by following the Grand Lodge URL from above and clicking on "Hotels" |

There is one in downtown portland, I can't remember the name of it, but an old motel that was upgraded in a rather grand style and it was very remarkable and walking distance to all kinds of "weird" and interesting Portland stuff downtown. |

If SWMBO is into outlet malls, you could stay at the old poor farm, drop her off at the outlet mall in Troutdale on the way in and everybody's happy. |

I have a buddy turning 50 (the baby!) this summer and his wife was threatening to have the party on the 19th. Last night we plied them with curry and beer and got it moved back a week.
My wife's excited about the trip (which guarentees our attendance) and we very much look forward to meeting you all...sorry, y'all.

If the weather is really nice, however, I may have to change my plans and just bring the Goldwing with the 1537 strapped on the back. I promise I will put my wifes "armor" and a helmet on it. Might have to stick a wig on to just for effect. Rather long-necked lady, but look at those curves. |

When playing solo, it's true you do tend to follow whatever muse takes your head. "We'll end that one there then!"(quote from a previous band)
But I was thinking of swapping a few cassettes (!?!?) and lyric/chord charts so we could play a few tunes together-ish. ;) If one person plays rythme while another does lead noodles, you can't really step on each others notes much...then there's the bass that holds it all together. That's my story anyway... |

Actually, I probably can strum a little melody and can sing as long as the words are printed really big.
If anyone can play Maury to my Jim Croce, we could probably to 5 or 6 of those. I'll try to resurrect all my Eagles stuff. Those were pretty easy. Please remember that I dropped out of the guitar scene for the 80s and 90s. |

Me, JeffW, Schroeder and Weaser doing Moondance. It's hard to get together to practice, let alone across two continents and 8 time zones.

Don't worry about filling up the house -- i guess we'll just make room and figure it out as we go. At this point, the more the merrier i say.
After reading this thread, our event looks to be building nicely. I did not see any hanging questions that need answered, but if i missed any please repost it and i'll get it answered. PM is available now for contact info if other's haven't stepped up and provided it -- please feel free to share that within the group.
Also, all you finger-picking stylists -- bring your tabs :)

In other words.....I am a peace with myself on my playing abilities.

Jeff, the thing I miss most about the 911s I had was the fake back seats. I cut off the bottom of a booster seat and hauled the girls around as they were growing up. Then the fold down bench back there was great for hauling stuff on trips. Neither of the Boxster trunks will hold a guitar, at least if it's in the case. |

Has anyone attempted to contact Pokeypup, MisterGolf, edensharverst or a few others in the area to see if they are interested? I noticed that you can search profiles by location and possibly could pm or email them as a group.
It just occurred to me that I might not be able to my Molson beer drinking story with my daughter there. |

Your daughters presence may even help provide an element of decorum through restraint, that by the end of the night we may appreciate, or more probably, the next morning. ;)

But we've certainly got a quorem and we don't want to have to rent an ampitheatre, so I wasn't going to beat the bushes too much.
If people are planning on bringing spouses/offspring/guests, please speak up so we don't surprise Gh1 or his wife too much, and so we don't run out of supplies before we run out of energy. :) |

I'd love to come, but Saturdays for me are just about impossible during the summer (darn day job :D ). Major bummer, as I should be getting my C759LX-Koa by then... :( If something miraculous happens in the next few days, I'll be sure to let you know.
Just to keep up, we've moved, and now live about two minutes from the greatest bed of depravity and social illness in Washington (yes, we're in the capital). When I start getting more than four hours of sleep again I'll get back in the chat... |

I'll actually have to watch myself. Mom's birthday party is that evening. It may be over in time to head back to gh1's. I don't expect the 80 year olds to go too late into the night. |

The Maudite looks like it's a lot more potent than what I usually drink. My tastes in beer were probably ruined from the start. I lived in Kansas, where we had to drink "3.2" beer until we turned 21. Coors was the local favorite.
Besides all that, I really need to watch my consumption. The plan is formulating that I will play and sing for my Mom's 80th birthday party that evening. |

On Aug 18 is the Tacoma factory Tour. On the 19th is the OFC gathering and the Ollala Bluegrass Festival - both of which don't hold a lot of excitement for my Wife (I became an over-zealous Ovation Fan later in life!). I need to see if a weekend devoted to what I want to do is the right thing to do.
That and what needs to be fixed around the house. |

I might still drive down Saturday evening (I'd be getting to Portland at about 7:00pm), if the event is going late in to the night. I'm wondering, though, how many people might be up for a breakfast get-together the next morning (Sunday). For me at least it would further justify driving down for part of the evening on Saturday...
What do you guys think? |

We could do a breakfast "hang out" at a restaurant, or a park (weather permitting), coffee shop...?
Since a whole bunch of us will be driving at least a little bit to get there, why not make more of a weekend out of it?
Mike, I do believe there are Lenny's in OR, but that is actually where Shari's originated, so it might be sacriligious to eat elsewhere. |

I think that I can fit the 1624, EA68, 1271, 1718, 1881, and the C759LX I custom ordered (assuming I have it by that point) in my car, along with my little Marshall and some pedals. Oh, and bread, of course. :D

I'm new to the Ovation family -- well, I will be next week when my 6751 Std Balladeer 12-String arrives from Elderly. Anyway, I'm just over the water near the 'couv (the WA 'couv, not the BC 'couv), so it sounds like it could be fun to join y'all. A few Qs:
1. How do I get the address details?
2. Are you all smokin pickers? Will my feeble strummin make me want to hide in the corner and cry in my beer(s)
3. If I come, what should I bring - apart from the 12Str, I could bring a Behringer Accusonic 1000 (nice but huge 'coffee shop' type amp) and some really cool Ukes. Or should I leave all that at home?
4. Are you PBR or IPA guys?
5. Do these jeans make my butt look big?
Cheers, 'veg
PS my blues name is 'Crippled Fingers Jefferson' -- which is my excuse for my crap playing |

(y'can't have too many ukeleles IMNSHO. amplification may be provided...?)

(IPA but flexible and open)

(if you have to ask, you know the answer) PS: up here no one would understand "the 'couv". It's pronounced Vang-couver. |

Edensharvest--sorry I may miss you if you don't get there till 7. My Mom's 80th birthday party starts at 6 over in Hillsboro. No offense, but I wasn't too worried about not meeting you until I saw the haul of guitars you're bringing.
AFG (Ron), Rainier is probably 50 miles from Portland between Portland and Astoria. Anyway, that's too close to miss. If you're flying, you'll be really close to gh1's house if you land at Portland or really, really close to my family if you take a small plane into Hillsboro. See you could have delivered the Ute to me.
Fatveg--do an email or private message to gh1 for his address. If you don't get a response, let me know and I'll find it and send it to you. It's on Yamhill, which is just a little on the east side of the river, straight across from downtown. So it's a very central location for the Portland area. I just met Waskel and listened to him play. You won't feel embarassed by your playing once you hear me. I'm a hacker just like my golf game. |

It's actually across the river from Longview, and if my memory is correct (motorcycle trip from last summer), you can travel up (or down) I-5, cut off at Longview and cross an very long/tall bridge that will drop you nearly square into Rainier. Then you can either go back to I-5 or simply follow Hwy 30 back into the Portland area.
Very close in Alaska terms. And no airplane required from Rainier to Portland....lots of roads. ;-) |

fatveg: I sent you a reply to your PM with contact info. The logistics to some of your other questions are not worked out yet, but definately bring your instruments -- i think we'll have enough amps. But if someone pipes up and wants to hear your Behringer Accusonic 1000, well, then bring that too.
I'm pretty sure we will represent a broad spectrum of guitar playing abilities, even still, nothing wrong with hiding in the corner and drinking beer ;)
I drink both IPA and PBR, but on August afternoons -- probably PBR.
No comment on your butt .....

gh1 -- thanks for the info, I plan to be there
I'll leave the amp at home unless anyone specifically requests to play with it. I got the model number wrong, it's a Behringer Ultracoustic ACX1000 -- big and heavy, a little noisy but great sounding.
Looking forward to seeing you all

Mike, it was a lot of fun playing with you in CT. Too bad we both had to travel across the country to find time to sit down and play together (while trying to overcome sleep deprivation). Hope you can make it.
Mark, I also enjoyed meeting you finally, and your wife (hope I didn't mess up her exercise schedule too much). It was a wonderful break in a very long hot weekend journey, and a fun ride in the Boxer. Thanks again for that.
You've got a very nice selection of geetars! Great 1537! Everytime I play one of these I'm amazed that they all sound so different, yet they all sound fantastic. To me they're the perfect example of the 'Ovation' sound. Bright and warm at the same time.
I'm now home and excessively happy with my new bike. My only regret is that between getting up to leave for PDX at 2:30 am and not getting out of Twin Falls until 4pm, I wasn't able to make it to Hermiston to visit and spend the night with Jeff. I look forward to meeting him at NWOFC.

On playing, I must admit, I almost never 'jam' per se. I play backup when asked and will try to follow anything. (though HATE Andrew Lloyd Webber after playing his personally arranged excerps from Cats) For the most part I play obscure originals, my own and others. Mostly country/rock/folk flavoured.
Will bring my no-name bass to hold down the bottom end and some small percussion....watever fits around the beer  |

Mark, I'll play oldies with you anytime. I don't get a lot of opportunities to sit down and play with other guitarists, but my hands remember many songs my brain has forgotten. And if I don't know it, I'll catch up with you within a few measures. |

Cat Stevens would be fine. I used to know a few of his, so maybe my fingers will remember, but I doubt it. If I learn one "new" oldie, it will be more than worth it. |

I don't recognize any of fillhixx's songs, though. The Boss is my wife. And what are those letters after the songs? Knowing what key something is in doesn't mean that I know what chords to play. Maybe this is why nobody ever invites me to a jam session. |

For beverages -- yeah, bring those to share -- mix and match style. I'll have a big a$$ cooler full of ice we can stash 'em in. I'll get some cases of PBR, soda, and water, and at least a few Molsons for Mark.
For food -- well, at first i thought i'd just grill up some wings, and kabobs, put together a couple of salads and call it good. But that was back when i thought there would be about seven to ten. As it grows, and that's a good thing, i'm not sure i could keep up.
Let's wait until we get a better idea of the head count. I'm thinking by the 7th of August most folks will know if they can make or not, and we can take a poll. Even if there are a couple still on the fence i doubt that will effect any planning. From there we might be in a better postion to formulate a plan.
Anyway, that's my thinking on it at this point.

Really, food's not that big an issue. Our gang does dinner every Tuesday...if it gets that big, everyone just brings one dish that feeds two and you have twice as much food as you need! (Host supplies nachoes and dip, just to avoid 14 of the same thing)
-or-
Everyone brings a protien (meat) to be cooked on the barbie.
-or-
Just bring what you feel like...this is always a great way to stock the hosts fridge for about a week.

I miss the parties where a bunch of guys just brought whatever was handy. Once we got married the parties all had to have some theme and there was more food than drink. Nothing more boring than a Mormon party. I'll pick up something on the way over or I'll grab a bunch of leftovers from Mom's 80th if I make it back later. |

Waskel, does your wife have a list of fabric store addresses? And what's the traffic/driving like in this town?
Remember, I'll/we'll be in a foreign (and hostile) land...not knowing the local customs and such we're likely to say something in 'Canadian' that gets us sent to Gitmo! |

I'm driving my Sable, which will hold at least 4 guitars in the trunk, two in the backseat with my Marshall, and one or two more in the front. Definitely bring the Ute - hopefully I won't miss you on this trip, as I'd love to try one.
On another note, would anyone be interested in playing a newly-refurbished 1869? I just got mine back from the mothership in near PERFECT condition, and could hold off selling it long enough to bring it down in August.
I'm thinking for sure to bring:
1624 Country Artist
1881 Adamas II
1718 Elite
EA68 Viper
1271 Viper solid
C759LX (hopefully)
LOTS OF BREAD & GOODIES!!!!! |

How about Okangan Springs? Kokanee? Big Rock Brewery? Unibroue? These are all smaller brewers, though many have sold controlling interest to large companies,(sigh) some retain their original flavours.
Unibroue is the most interesting of the lot, they do in bottle fermentation for finishing carbonation so their product has bottle residue just like homebrew. It does not travel all the well for this reason, however they do manage to get some flavours to BC all the way from Quebec.
Do you think I could get a six of hemp beer across the border? |

The Mexican restaurant where my daughter works thinks my regular beer is Negro Modelo, but they keep better track than I do. The only beer I ever had to pour out was something Kilt Lifter. I hope it was just a bad batch. The only other explanation is that some drunk Scot pissed in the bottle and they thought it still had enough alcohol content to call it beer and sell it. |

Dave 114 is my exit so i'm guessing the Arts Center?First O at 105? My first new electric was at 105 {well technically 109,but ya get there from 105 too}. Place called Red Bank music. Andy who was the amp tech there went on to start up Tech21 {Sansamp}.Those were tha days! |

Although I think 105 might not be correct. I got my first Ovation at Red Bank Music, but not the main store in Red Bank. They had a little second shop in Neptune in the Acme Plaza on Rt.35 right in front of 2-Guys.

I've been talking about the conflict with my mom's birthday party for quite awhile. Her birthday isn't really till September 3, but we had too many other relative that couldn't do it over Labor Day.
How about if you all come over to the Orenco Elks lodge and help celebrate her birthday? I tried to work that, too, but it didn't pan out. I can hold my own on the beer drinking, maybe even with a Canadian, but I do need to be able to get back to Hillsboro (my daughter might be the designated driver) and be able to play and sing a simple song for her. Maybe I should practice a little while drinking beer. Oh, wait. That's how I always practice. |

Now that I have my calendar correct, I should be all set. Still no word on exact date for my custom 12, but I'm still hoping. I will have a Tacoma Roadking dreadnought-style 6-string to bring along, just for kicks. After all, even in the OFC, if it's a Northwest get-together, a Tacoma should be welcome...right? |

I did a bit of research and here it is:
For a funky, hip place to stay at reasonable rates: it's the Jupiter Hotel. Be sure to request a room in the "quiet zone", there is a hipster bar (Doug Fir) associated with it that goes until the wee hours. It is on Burnside - East Side and about 5-10 mins from the Gathering.
Here is a listing of fabric shops. However one of the best, so i'm told, The Whole Nine Yards, is no longer at the location listed. It is instead now on Burnside East Side too. About a half a mile away from the Jupiter Hotel.
OK then, i hope that is useful.

That's pretty good list, Greg. The ladies out to be able to lay out a route to hit most of them without getting lost. |

Well, Here is a B&B finder type of deal. Not sure how comprehensive it is, but it is a start. (i recall you specified B&B as well)

Yep -- about a mile or two from the Downtown/Rose Quarter area. Like you said, any "corporate" hotel in the area is close. Availability depends on the convention(s) going on at the time. I guess i recalled the request for kind of "off the beaten path" accomodations.
Anyway -- carry on!

I'm a bit of a connoisseur of 'no star' hotels. Small old family run places. Where they know they're number two but try to smell like number one.
After all, it's just a place to sleep and odds are I may be drunk by the time I get there. |

Location: Central Massachusetts | Uggh, I hate recommending places that I haven't been or stayed... here's what google maps has to say about it:
hotels/motels near Gh1\'s neighborhood
I would shoot for the Shilo Inn at the convention center (labelled I) or the La Quinta, also near the convention center (labelled M) or the nearby lowball Econo Lodge (labelled Q on the 2nd page)
All of those are less than $100 a night and not far from the shindig. There are cheaper hotels but they are mostly closer to the airport.
There's also a Days Inn in downtown Portland near PSU.. cheap, but it's a bed and a shower.
Anywhere in the downtown I-405/I-5 "loop" would be relatively close to the party, as well as hotels near the I-5/I-84 interchange (Convention Center/Lloyd Center)
Waskel, what's that hotel right there at the "end" of NW 23rd right near the freeway onramp? |

Party like a Kennedy! That's too funny.
History: When I grew up in Taxachusetts there was always a small picture of Geo. W and or abe Lincoln on the wall. The big portrait was JFK and you could usually spot RFK not too far away. |

re: booked up hotels... hmmm.. the biggest event I can think of that might be causing hotel probs is the Jen-Weld Tradition golf tournament that runs the 21st thru the 27th. Guess people could be coming in early for that.

For what it is worth, I did get a reservation at the Fairfield in Lake Oswego (where I work), but I did book that last week. |

I prefer, when possible, to buy leftover rooms at 9-10->? at night...it's amazing how much the value of a room drops between noon and 9PM.
...of course there are a few risks, like how many places you have to shop before you buy. But that just adds to the adventure! |

Definitely some of that local Canadian beer :) , beverages, maybe some snack food. I'm going to grill up plenty of lamb and chicken kabobs. I'll have a package or two of hot dogs and a few pounds of hamburger. So the main "course" will be taken care of.
fatveg is on his own :)
Those that are local -- if you have some extra, guitar friendly, chairs that might be good. Space and seating may be a bit tight -- nothing we won't figure out though, i'm sure.
It cools down at night so be sure to bring a jacket. Fleece is practically mandated in Portland.
That should take care of the accommodations. As to the focus of the gathering, some random thoughts:
Tabs of some of your repertoire would be nice.
Someone earlier offered to put on a "class" on home recording. Not sure what would be good to have around to make that a more practical lesson.
I'd like to learn about the electronic side of the electo/acoustics of Ovations -- i really don't have a clue. I've got so many different kinds of holes in my guitars that i have no idea what they are for, as an example.
Cameras.

But parking is an issue in my neighborhood. I'm one block off a commercial strip -- bars, restaurants, coffee houses, shops, etc and those that visit them will be competing for parking. You may end up a block or two away.
I do have sort of a driveway, it's small and narrow, that we'll keep open for unloading.

Nice, but wrong house, close though. My house is two houses right of the arrow, with the grey roof. You can see the two skylights into my kitchen. The drive is to the right of that.
Also, note the yellowish splotch filling the interstection. A bunch of local "hippies" painted it with a sunflower design. That's the intersection of 33rd & Yamhill.
Official show up time is 1:00 PM. But, if your traveling -- just come by whenever. Don't want you roaming the streets of Portland, now do we?

She just told me she wasn't planning on attending. She was just planning her shopping in Boise.
Waskel has the 1537 and sort of promised to bring it. Haven't heard from him since I gave it to him on Thursday. He should also bring a 1624 and his Adamas, I assume. We would like to see a Viper. |

Yes, I'll bring the 1537. Or at least a picture of her proving she's ok and a note explaining where to leave the money.
She's got her new strings on. And the rattle was a pick in her innards.
I was planning to bring the 1581 Adamas II, the 1759 CL12, and the 1271 Viper (recently aquired from Uncle Stevie's Colorado Guitar Emporium and Celestial Manifestation Observation Station).
Probably bring the MicroCube and my Marshall AS50R acoustic amp. If I can fit the 1624 in as well I'll bring it, but that might not leave room for the 1537... |

If I can fit the 1624 in as well I'll bring it, but that might not leave room for the 1537... I was reluctant to replace those extra light strings with lights, because it played so well with the extra lights. I don't know how the pick got in there, since I rarely use one. Maybe my daughter was using it. I'm sure you can fit both the 1624 and the 1537 in the Honda (not the Goldwing). If not, I'll hunt you down like a dog. |

In light of losing $2700 to this ebay scam, I will probably not be making it down to Portland. Not having money for food or rent all of a sudden kind of puts a crunch on unnecessary road trips. In addition, I will most likely be putting a couple of guitars up in the for sale section, namely the Tacoma Roadking, 1624 Country Artist, and the EA68 Viper. dvd, let me know how much you need for the shirt, and I'll either have you send it to me or send it with Woody and I'll get it from him.
Sorry guys, I was looking forward to this. Thanks for all your input. |

One of the first lawyers I met used to say there should be a defense of criminal stupidity. It seems like the dumber a person is in injuring himself, the more likely he is to sue someone else for it. Bring it on, John. Just don't damage my guitar in the process. Given the rapidly depreciation of the Boxster, I think you should just concentrate on protecting those Hondas. |

a little repression is a good thing. Well, maybe not so much repression as an unrelated celebration to help keep things in perspective. If you have a regular job, you have cash flow. You can then survive everything short of catastrophe and addiction. (see my wife the accountant for details)
Losing a couple grand in a bad deal is neither. Come ask me about losing more than a hundred on a business gone bad! ;)
Edensharvest, come on down, the company is warm. These celebrations and tribal gatherings are among the things that make the experience of life itself worthshile...IMNSHO  |

To gather Saturday and this afternoon (Wednesday) is a logical impossibility as one cannot be in two places at one time.

We have Kokanee, Blue and Canadian available here. One thing about it is it's brewed to "American tastes" so you can imagine it tastes different. I haven't had a Molson Export or a Labatt Classic since I moved from southern Ontario 7 years ago.
One thing to be wary of is US Customs who limit the amount of Canadian suds you bring into the US. You may have to pay duty and taxes on anything over about 24 bottles...and possibly 12. |

I will also bring the printed edition of "Slipkid's Cheat Sheets". Classic 3 chord playalongs from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's! |

Will anybody have a bass amp ... thought I might bring the Viper bass (the Bassman might be a little big to bring along). Of course, a decent bassist would also be nice. :)
Here's what I'm planning on toting: Josh White, 6751 Lennon, 6759 12 string, EA68 Viper, Anderson Valley Boont Amber Ale, Lagunitas IPA. My son is likely to bring a wooden box, probably just to get a rise out of us.
Anybody want me to bring a Hamer or two? My electric amps are both pretty big so I doubt I can bring either of them.
Let me know if there is anything else that's a "must bring". Looks like there will already be a 1537, 1271 Viper, and Deacon 12 in attendance. |

I am in Lake Oswego this morning, so looking like I will be able to pull this off. Got the W597, 2080 and 1537 in the trunk, but with the grandson coming back, didn't have room for an amp either (nor the Carvin DC400).
I can manage to play a bit of bass (used to be my primary instrument...the way I play 6 string, you probably stay on the bass) |

RE seesquare’s copy center: Well, there isn’t one in the immediate neighborhood, but they are scattered across the city and some are not too far away. MWoody said he was bringing a set of the cheat sheets. Perhaps he can make you a copy before he leaves tomorrow?
I’ve got two amps at home. A GB Shen. Jr. and an old 30W Crate. I’ll pick up a pack of name tags today (good idea!).
Remember, parking is going to be an issue. So, I’ll leave the drive open for unloading, and from there you can scavenge a parking spot on the street.
One more warning. We have a big dog that has strong pack instincts. Which means he is going to bark his head off when you arrive. Don’t worry, it’s just his pack alarm going off. He is not aggressive, but don’t show fear, it only heightens his anxiety.
Sorry to hear you can’t make it Edensharvest, sad state of affairs for sure. Take care.
See the rest of you tomorrow!

Location: closely held secret | Btw, yes, it was great fun! Many OFC members were able to attend, and several brought thier wives. One even brought his parents, who were only planning to stay long enough to check out "these old guys from an internet chat room" they were leaving thier son with (very wise and commendable, I think!). They wound up staying all day!
Please let me be the first to thank Greg and Shari for being the wonderful, generous hosts they were, providing food, drink and hospitality to all (even me!). |

Location: PDX | It was a great time that sadly had to end. What a blast having the opportunity to play so many different guitars! I really wish there was more time to get to know each of you better. I can't help but feel the sense of opportunity lost. But alas, such is the nature of time; it's limited. I would like to advocate for a reunion.
I ended up with a power cord to an amp and a green folder of chord sheets (Nextel FY02). If the owners would PM my your snailers i'll see that you get them back.
Thanks to all you road warriors that traveled so many hours to join in. And a special thanks to Mark for his year long efforts to put this thing on the map. And one for dvd for his efforts in geting the shirts made.
Oh, and tdeej: if you need to make space, i'll take that 1547 off your hands. Bar none that was my favorite guitar of the day. Thanks for bringing it!
Cheers all! What a wonderful group you are!

Absitively a great time had by all. Greg & Shari were the consummate hosts, and the paragons of forebearance, despite our nomadic intrusions into their "plantings". Thanks again for the hospitality.
Wide array of musicianship, and equipment displayed. Rather daunting to see that many O's in the same place.
Personally, held up my end, as devoid of talent, but high on enthusiasm! Got my mitts on several, really beautiful instruments, and yes, I can play badly with ANY guitar, thank you very much!
I'm in favor of making this an annual affair. Think I better start practicing a little more, too.
Cheers,

He'll have to fill you on on the name of it when he gets home, but it was a percussion instrument -- a wooden tube that made different tones depending on where he hit it.
The 87C and the book were A/B'd... I think by Miles and Mark? Not sure who.
People will have to volunteer their own list of what they brought. too many for me to keep track of. We completely filled three rooms of their house with cases. I brought my super-shallow Elite and my '01 Collector's.
Ray from Kaman brought a 2080 and an LX that had various sections cut away so you could see the internals of the body and the neck. Sorry I didn't get a pic of it.
One of my favorites was a 12-sting cobalt-blue woven-top cut-away Adamas... was that yours Tim? What was that model number?
And another favorite was Waskel's 1581. And Greg's 1674. And fillhixx's Thunderhead. And MWoody's breadwinner. and .. and .. and .. well, they were all great! |

BTW - I have your T-shirt.
It was nice to touch on all flavors. I did notice that my rescued 1114 got picked up a lot - not to do with me but as a credit to the Ovation design. There is something about a 12 fret wideneck that that is right. Maybe they were afraid of dropping one of the "nice" guitars.
Miles brought some one-of-a-kinds! |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Finally got back and got the chores done. Thanks to everyone, especially our hosts. Beautiful home and back yard, Greg and Shari. I was envious as I was mowing the lawn tonight.
I was about to download pics, but I'm glad Waskel and dvd posted theirs so I can get some sleep.
Some "answers": We compared the Book and 87, but only briefly. I think my daughter was a little bit overwhelmed by Miles. Not because he's big and scary (that too), but because he just kept hauling out these beautiful guitars. I could not tell any difference in the sound. Maybe in a quiet room, someone with good ears could. I didn't realize the Book doesn't have a carved bridge. It also has the abalone around the headstock that the 87 doesn't. Innies on the 87 and outies on the Book. Different neck inlays. Other than those appearance items and the different preamps, they appeared to be the same guitar.
The wild looking collector's is dvd's 2001 Redwood. Sounds as good as it looks.
Too many choices for me to pick a favorite. Like going to a dance, I like what I brought. Miles' samples of his collection were simply amazing.
A few goals for next year:
Learn to play something on electric guitar.
Learn to play something on a 12 string.
Stay long enought to teach the rest of you "Classical Gas".
Learn "Classical Gas".
Learn a few even oldier oldies than I know. The only jam session I heard seemed to focus on the 60s.
Bring more guitars.
Bring way more guitar stands.
Bring armless chairs.
Drink more beer.
Stay until they throw me out, unless it's at my place.
Thanks for a great time. |

Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | Okay, I will (almost) never criticize yankee beer again. The specialty brews I tasted from N. California to Washington...at the party, not while driving..were each and every one much better than the everyday-off-the-shelf crap I brought. Although Greg seemed to like the Pilsner.
There were a couple 1/2 sacks of specialy brews, but I hid them at the bottom to leave for Greg. but that may have been a waste given his joy with the Pil.
Add mine to the pile of thanks to Greg And Shari for hosting this. Love your yard! and neighbourhood...which is a lot for me, as I hate cities in general.
Note: The bags under my eyes are larger than normal in these pics. Caused by 5 hours driving, 2 hours at the border, and the cavity search from hell. (words no man want to hear; "Okay, now I'll have to ask you to lean into me,sir.")
Total travel time from home is 12-14 hours but we did the trip down in two legs.
Linda and I had a wonderful time, it's just too bad these things don't last long enough to have more than cursory conversations. Our original imagined itinerary would have taken about three days what with fabric stores, micro brews, and museum/libbrary tours.
Next time, our place!
:D
How about at Vanouver Island Musicfest? 2 1/2 days of music and camping. Five stages that are within a 5 minute walk of each other and very relaxed camping environment.
We go every year and really, you come away feeling like you've had a weeks holiday or more.
Y'make a little village within the campground and off you go to hear a few wellknown acts and a bunch you (okay, I) never would have heard otherwise...that are excellent!
Or, I could just set up the old 24'geodesic dome in the backyard and you all come to The Salmon Capitol of the World!
Great meeting all of you, there's a bed waiting any time you're lost enough to get here. |

Speaking of which, thanks to Ray and Miles for handing out a few Ovation and OFC goodies right about then.
And Greg's lamb kabobs were excellent! |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Yeah, those pictures made it look like a Canadian standoff, but it was just because everyone else sat down. I suppose they figured that the stories would be long-winded. For a true Canadian standoff, we should have each had a beer in hand, but I was headed out the door.
I apologize for the lack of Idaho beer. I was going to bring some Idaho wine and then figured this was a beer crowd. I wrongly surmised that Albertson's, which used to be a Boise company, would have some Idaho brews at it's Oregon stores, but I couldn't find any, so I brought some local Oregon beer and, of course, potato chips. My daughter brought the veggie plate, so she and fatveg could have something to eat. I didn't drink all the beer I brought, but what I had was pretty good.
The chicken kabobs were excellent, too. It was just a great get together. Just wish I had more time to fling BS back and forth. I hope we made a few of the young folks into lifelong Ovation fans, if they weren't already. |

BTW, the lamb kabobs were out of this world. As was the smoked salmon that was snuck past our intrepid border guards. Or maybe samples were used as a bribe? Just glad they didn't confiscate the whole lot of it.
There was an amazing array of guitars at the event. And the lesson to be learned is that while we can all argue about which ones sounded better than some others, Ovation doesn't really make any bad guitars. And there were plenty of good players there to do them all justice.
Special kudos to Tour72 ... that lad has got some great chops. The future of Ovation looks bright with talents such as he carrying the torch forward.
A year is too long to wait to do this again. Anyone up for a NorCal event sometime soon? Casa Bobbo is open and available. |

I am up for either Phil's and/or Bob's proposals. As a default location Sheri and I had a such great time hosting this one, we'd be happy to do it again. However, in fairness to the travelers, perhaps moving it around the NW would be more equitable.

Well, I wasn't thinking everyone would jump in the Dodge and come this weekend!
However a couple of the bikers (no fear, 99%ers!) in the crowd expressed interest/curiousity about some of our more twisty roads. We have a couple that we use to scare prairie folk and keep the influx down a bit. |
