I go to the options tab.

click on audio

click on general tab and I am prompted to choose ports for the and recoding timimg master.

there are no choices there it says "none"

any clue on how I make choices happen in this box?

try posting in the recording group on the social site! Some real wiz kids over there.

Seriously....too early to think. I'll reread this one when I get to work over some coffee.

Al, you'll get an answer here . I use the Guitar Tracks subforum all the time to get those kinds of problems solved.

I agree http://forum.cakewalk.com/default.asp or call Cakewalk (Sonar) support.

It looks like Sonar is not recognizing the sound device fully.

1. Did you run the Audio Profiler?
2. There may be a SONAR patch for the driver you are using.

Also, if you haven't already... Sonar actually has a pretty good "help" F1 utility. Search on "record timing."

Well, looks like you got a couple good resources so rather than piling on more, I'll wait to see if those provided solve the problem.

Good luck!

For anyone else reading this...

If you run into any issues with Sonar, there are a couple of quick steps (I talked to Al about this on the phone aleady) that will help.

1. If you are using an add-on audio card or device, disable/remove the ones you are not using from the machine. As example, many/most computers have an "built in" sound module. Disable it at the BIOS. You should first uninstall and drivers, then disable the onboard device.

2. Insure the audio device you are using for Sonar is the primary device. This should be pretty obvious when windows boots up and you get that "Intro" sound. Play a tune with media player or whatver. Once confirmed the deice is working with the WIndows sounds... TURN OFF the Windows sounds.

3. Run the AUDIO PROFILER in Sonar.

Most of the time Sonar will just come up and work fine. The above steps are for when it doesn't, however, the first two are just good practice for ANY computer recording setup.

Also, checking and searching at the supplied links. A lot of good info. The product has been around since the days of DOS, so there is a TON of info on their site.

Check often for updates from Cakewalk. They are always fine-tuning and working on performance issues. You'd think I would put this first, but it's rare when Sonar won't work because it "needs" an update. On a first time install, it's best to make sure it's working at all, before updating.

On a rare occasion, things will go sideways on a new install and none of the above works. Contact the folks at Sonar. They are very helpful, but let them know you did all the stuff above first. If not, they'll likely have you do all that first before they can assist.

As I said, been using Sonar since the DOS days. Tried a bunch of others, go back to Sonar every time.

does sonar load or does the message pop up and stop loading the program?

maybe a buffer setting is too low?

Miles is the sonar expert so maybe he can help.

The following shows some examples of where you select the inputs and outputs for each track.

If things are setup correctly, and you only have one sound card/device... it should default to what you need and just set the tracks to record mode and click record.

Also, what was the result of running the Audio Profiler?

Also, please elaborate on this "now I get a 324 uses too much may cause error message." Full message, how you get it etc etc etc..
