I gig with one.

It IS great plugged-in.

Unplugged, it can sound a bit "thin" in the lower-mid and lower registers.

Needless t'say, there's NO "boominess" . . .

I've played a few, the 1866 i believe. your assumptions, in my opinion, are correct.

i've never played one in which i was happy with the unplugged sound. i think it's my own personal preference in that i prefer a deeper 12 string sound. i play with heavy gauge strings on my 12's, and i tune down to C#, similar to leo kottke's taylor model. my mid bowl legend 12 has a great balance, while my elites sound like a piano when tuned down.

now, just like you thought, when you're plugged into a dedicated acoustic amp, all bets are off. The sound is wonderful, and when playing with a strap, the SSB is very comfortable.

good luck , ernie

It's a gigging guitar.

It's what it was designed to be.

I've gigged with both SSB Legend and a Legend LX MB, and both are excellent gig guitars.

I have a 12 strings 5759 and it's the best 12 strings I ever played. All the other guitarists that tried that instrument were impressed...the unplugged sound is strong, but it would be better if it was a deep bowl.
