 | I prefer him sitting alone, without the band, with an acoustic or a piano. I think the recent release of Live at Massey Hall was a very good example. He did both on that, and no band. |

 | I've been a huge fan of his for 30 years, and I will say one thing for him, he is one of the most fearless artists that I've ever heard. He does what he wants to do and doesn't seem to care what anyone thinks about it. Personally, I think that he's put out a lot od sub-par material as a result, but he's put a lot of great stuff too. |

 | I've tried to like/appreciate Neil Young. I've bought his cd's, listened to him, and invariably, given them away. He always sounds like a whiney old man to me.
In all fairness, I've listened to recordings of myself, and I sound worse......

 | What Moody said. Actually, both things Moody said.
That said Neal Young is a huge, unique talent and yeah, he's got cojones. His heart/head are in the right place, too. He started the Bridge school for a daugther with special needs and does yearly acoustic concerts at Shoreline Amphitheater (SF Bay Area) and always manages to get big headliner musicians to come. All money raised goes to the school.

Plus he's a car guy, again with a unique twist. He's got a diesel hybrid 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible that's supposedly going to get 100 mpg when it's done.

 | F-yeah! Neil's another one of my pathfinders, like the Ramones, who can resist ... ...
Raised my rifle to my eye
 Never stopped to wonder why.
 Then I saw black,
And my face splashed in the sky.

 | I have to say that Neil is one of my favorites, maybe my most favorite song writer of all. With his volume of works there are going to be some that just don't have the mass appeal. But overall I love it. My son and I did a live perfromance of Cortez The Killer to his would history class, they loved it! "We've got a kinder, gentler machine gun hand" is one of the greatest lines I've heard.

 | Sometimes Neil misses the mark, like with Cortez. The reason Cortez was able to beat the aztecs was that the aztecs were oppressors of neiboring people, but yeah, great song otherwise. For those interested in the Conquest of Mexico, I highly recommend, Conquest by Hugh Thomas. |

 | I've always liked Neil. He has a voice that I sound alot alike naturally. I always start off my kareoke nights with a Neil Young song. I get cheers with them and sometimes with other artists' songs but always with Neil's. By the way I can't stand Bob Dylan's voice and don't understand the comparison between the two. |

 | I got Neil autograph in Nashville when he was taping P.Wind at the Ryman. He was walking down the street w/another guy I stopped my car in the middle of the street jumped out and pulled out my guitar Strp and sharpe and ask if he had time. THe guy w/him said NO. but Neil stopped turned around and signed it anyway. I got tickets to the taping and it was very good. Who remembers the Shocking Pinks album in the 80"s? |

 | I'm glad you like Neil, AJ + Richard. I'll hopefully throw a few of his at ya this weekend.
The OzOFC - 'Out On the Weekend' at last!

The '05ES is on its way up from the 'gong, hopefully will be here by Friday. If it does arrive, I'll bring it on Saturday.

 | Looking forward to it. Thinking of CSN&Y reminds me of a skit on The Simpsons where Barney (the resident alcoholic) meets David Crosby at a function: "Wow, David Crosby, you're my hero". "You like my music?"
 "You're a musician?"

BTW, I recently read that when CSN recorded "Southern Cross" it was actually SSN you hear on the recording. Timothy B. Schmidt of the Eagles sang for Crosby, who was too ill at that point to perform.

 Can anybody confirm?

 | That whole "Daylight Again" album was slated t'be a Stills/Nash album from the get-go. Crosby was off on an extended "SnowDay".
He wandered in from time-to-time to add some vocal tracks. Nash & Jackson Browne berated him into completing the two Crosby tracks ("Delta" & "Might As Well Have a Good Time") and contributing them to make it a CSN album. "Delta" was written on Browne's piano, and he (Browne) practically stood over Crosby till he finished it.
Those two tunes are some of my favorites on that album.

I spent the night of my 50th birthday on an ocean-liner deck chair with a bottle of rum and my guitar gazing at the SouthernCross (first time I'd ever seen it) as it hung over the Caribbean horizon.

 | I think Neil's biggest attribute was the writing. His voice has at times been difficult to listen to, but then again, it works for him. My current list of songs I can sing and play is full of Neil (anyone at the NW Gathering would already know this).
 Ohio
 I Am A Child
 Needle and the Damage Done
 Down By The River
 Cinnamon Girl
Don't Let It Bring You Down

I don't think my versions sound anything like his, voice wise anyways (thankfully!), though some of the guitar work is similar.

 | Some people criticize Young’s voice and musicianship however his music seems to touch people at a basic sort of imaginative level so whatever art is I guess that’s part of it and it’s something that you either have or you don’t and it’s not always conventional.
Lots of people can play and sing better than Neil Young in a conventional sense but many of them are completely boring.

As for CSN&Y, I always thought they were too pretentious and naive - the kind of guys that thought they stopped the Viet Nam war all by themselves - although Young maybe not so much so.

Young grew up in North Ontario where I’m from and I get the impression that the dark and desolate Canadian winter kind of runs through some of his music. I also think that his voice suits much of what he writes about and how he plays.

 I think he’s borderline mad as well..lol

I read somewhere that CSN were slightly terrified of him and ran everything by him first before do anything..lol

 | I was never as impressed (musically) with Young as I was with the rest of CSNY. His live rust years didn't do much for me either.
But one night years later he was the musical guest on SNL and he did the song Harvest Moon. I remember being absolutely hypnotized by his performance of that song. So much so that it was the first (and last) Neil Young album I ever bought.

That reminds me - I need to learn that song...Drop D you say?

 | I have always put up with his voice. He sounds like Micky Mouse on a bad acid trip. BUT...his music is so good, I don't mind it so much. One of my favorites is "Like a Hurricane". (I love the whole "American Stars 'N Bars" album.) As a matter of fact, I love that song so much I taught it to Jarrett and his band, and now it's one of their most requested songs whenever they have a gig. |

 | Neil Young should give us all a hope that we might make it some day. I think that he is into reaching out to all areas of music and hitting at least a base hit at what he does.
He is all over the place with his stuff from Country to Metalhead and he ends up with a top selling albulm doing it.

from "HARVEST MOON TO TRANSFORMER MAN"
 he makes them all good.GWB
