Great work!Bobbo... You went for that 60's surf sound & you got it!!
Dave.... Well written. The words formed a vivid picture in my head.
Beal... as you like to say, "well said". Top drawer guitar work. That song darn well better have won at the Mermaid at one time or another!
Mike.. I'm pleased to get as close as seconc place to that song.
Randy... You're making me want to buy a plane ticket.
And Cliff... You really streched yourself on this one buddy. A new instrument, great imagery. Great vocals and production work.
.______________
There is some great production work here.More to come after a few more times through it.And Al... cut it out. Your sounding like Eyore. I'll never play good... you're better off without me... thanks for noticing me.
Next time Al... next time for sure! Okay?? |

I guess that one of the reasons I don't try to record something for a cd is that with me, it would just be vocals and guitar. On almost every cut, it sounded like a full band and string section. I'm very very impressed with what everybody's been doing.... |

But variety is the spice of life as they say, and I think there is a place for those "simpler" tunes.

There is something to be said for the simplicity of a voice and guitar. Maybe if we do another CD in the future we theme it as a "singer/songwriter" release.
At least for me, the issue with over-produced is that I've got a lot of "stuff", you know DAW synth, drum triggers, etc. that I never get to use except for a project like this one. So the tendency is to open up the closet and try to use everything I've got. Wrong approach.
My first "final" verson of Ocean Street had a zillion tracks, saxophones, strings, hand claps, triple tracked guitars, blah, blah, blah. I demo'd it for my wife and she hated it. "I thought this was a guitar club, why are you trying to be a bad Phil Spector wanna-be?"
I cut out 2 verses, ditched all kinds of crap and ended up with something much more managable. But you know what, I also saved a version with just acoustic guitar (Tak TF430) and vocals, and it doesn't sound all that bad (to me).
There's a few guys on the CD who did basically that - Vocals and Guitar. I like it. Acrobat without a net.

I don't have synth drums or the like so I can't be tempted. Just a cajone might just do the trick.... someday.
Some.. not me... might concider Stephen's little overture to his tune a production device. Not me. I love it. I've hit the backtrack a couple time to hear it again.
And Dave, I'd like to hear the unplugged version of Ocean Street sometime. And weren't you the guy who got all over Stephen about his 29 tracks and then went on to extoll the virtues of simplicty???
About the...
"Lower your standards and achive your goals!"
I should have put one of the little winky icons next to that. I was not serious. |

. . the middle part was probably a bit "much", but I wanted something in the middle t'break-up the "strummy, strummy, sing-y, sing-y".
I had re-mixed a somewhat "unplugged" version as well, - no flutes.
I like the idea of just "guitar/vocal" for the next one. TwoTrakMax. |

My tune took an hour to do and an hour to mix it.
The vocal and rhythm were one take and first take.
I put on three other guitar tracks and we used bits and pieces.
One slide track after that but the solo was done four times, the last one was the keeper. It's the full solo, it wasn't pieced together.
It's nice to have friends with this kind of equipment who owe you favors. |

After listening to the samples, I was pretty certain I had really embarrassed myself with my submission. Mine was a live recording of a solo I did several years ago ('04 I think). So not only does it fit in the "simple" end of the spectrum, but I had nothing to do about the mix either.
However, since I do not have access to recording equipment, nor do I have a working knowledge of said gear  , I doubt I will be able to contribute much else in the future.
So thanks for using it this time guys. I can't wait to hear it! |

That was me. I asked him "do you mind if I ditch your original intro and do a little something else?" I had been listening to some Be Bop Deluxe and wanted to give it a try.

and Dave, unless you changed it again, you did send it to me for "approval" so I heard at least a version of it (if not the final one).
I'm still partial to the megaphone......

I was surprised to see it on Mr. Big records. I have been cultivating a yoko ono comback and reserving my label for the various yoko cover bands I have strategically placed around the world.
I digress
anyway it never ceases to amaze me the amount of talent we have here. the cd would never make it alone since it has such a diverse sound
just in general one tune reminded me of springsteen, another jefferson airplane, another the ventures, another ravi shankar etc etc etc.
great stuff guys!!!!!
maybe next time around

Then, despite all the other good stuff, this is testimony that us OFCers can play, in all sorts of styles! The recording quality of most (except mine, alas) was stellar. Five stars. At the moment my personal fave is the "Theme from an Imaginary Spaghetti Western"... I might be wrong, but that tune has a sense of humor! |

y'know, . . I also got (from a co-worker - that he - and his wife) "loved the song" but didn't like the "70's "flute-sound" . . .
Mebbe I was going too much "Fogelberg/Weissberg" . . . .

Location: Tennessee | I got my copy in the mail today and holy smokes is there a lot of talent in our little club here. But I guess I already knew that from Vols. 1 and 2. Once again I feel so lucky to have been able to put something together that maybe is OK enough to bring a bit of credit to the great group of people who frequent this electronic community center and clubhouse. I also hope that some of the folks over on some of the other boards get wind of this and give it a listen. Not just because it shows the great sounds Ovations can produce, but more so they can get a flavor for the broad cross section of the music world where Ovations are played by real people. It's a really fun collection of songs.
Mr. Witko: Kudos for the engineering of the final disc. I can only imagine the varied media you got from everyone, especially those of us who have a dead engineering gene. Excellent job balancing the mix. Secondly, the ordering of the songs and orchestrating this highly eclectic mix of music is magnificent. Thank you. A Lot.
Cliff, as always, a great job translating the flavor of the music into a picture worth more than a thousand words. You have a unique talent and I applaud your contribution to the production of the disc.
I've listened to the whole CD through about three times now. Every song is so good in its own way ... I guess every song speaks to me in one way or another. Sometimes it's the music, sometimes it's the person behind the song. Some of you need to identify yourselves ... many names I'm familiar with because they are the screen names, but some don't match. Who is who? Me? I'm surfbobbo.
I also did a little sittin' in on my son's track. I didn't mean for it to be on the CD because it's real rough and it was a one take deal, but it ended up on. Dane hates the song. Or so he says. But for me it's special because it got recorded right as he was getting ready to go back for his second tour in Iraq, back when it was at its hairiest and the "surge" was just getting underway. I believe Max was part of the deal and in the mix, and Dane said "Dad I want to record this song I wrote". We hastily set up the studio, and in many ways got many parts wrong, and went through the tune a couple of times and then hit record. One time. Then a track with the eggz got stuck on and the deal was done. What you hear is what you get. For me, it's priceless. And it's on the disc because of something Matt Smith told me and Max. He told us to leave something behind so that future generations can know what we were all about. It may be rough and surely there are places where it could be improved in so many ways, but it doesn't get any better than this. |

Sorry about that, I know a lot of you sent me very detailed descriptions. But maybe we can recreate some of that here by the various artists describing what guitars they used, etc. I'll go first ...
Acoustic guitars: Tak EF417 mic'd with an Otari and also run straight to the board. Tak TF430 Cool Tube to the board
Electric guitar: '62 Tele. Bass guitar: Typhoon

Location: Cicero, NY | By the way, I would like to add my congratulations to all for another stellar job on Night Out3 - Day At The Beach. Very nice work on all the tunes, the production and the label graphics. What stuck out to me - and I'm not exactly sure how to say this (feel free to help me out if you get my drift here) - was the overall regional flavor of some of the tunes. You've got your tunes from the Cali beach, some Southern flavored cuts, a Midwestern song or two, one or two that sounded like, well, REALLY Hawaiin (ok, that was easy) while all screaming the same theme of summer...did anyone else get that or did I just read (hear?) into it...?
In any case, great job everyone and, as has been said here almost ad nauseum, the talent pool here is very impressive. So, once again, I'll raise my glass to you all!

Coincidentally, it's next to John's "Rest" CD in the rotation. Maybe hanging out with a bunch of pros will make me better, but then that hasn't worked in golf either. |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | I took mine in the dash cd changer with a friend during a trip Saturday to do a funeral...he complemented all the songs very nicely: he really liked Stephen's; and especially Randy's slack key tunes...it really relaxed him he said. I think the CD is really nice: so many different styles and flavors represented...
FYI: I recorded "Waiting For the Wind" with the 1688-5 Adamas 12 (the same guitar I played it with at Amelia) direct into the new BR1600 DAW and next added the vocals thru the M-Audio Sputnik tube mic I just got from StephenT (this is an awesome mic!!!)...finally mixed it to stereo and then uploaded to the computer...Bare bones, yes: but I wanted to let the vocals/lyric's through (as the message is what's important to me as a songwriter); I wanted to add the sound of wind so I used one of the Hollow Sun patches I uploaded on the Alesis Fusion...thats it! I think for a last minute effort, it worked out even with the small window I had due to some technical issues...OK: I'd maybe do it differently next time w/ a bit more time to experiment (I'd add more reverb to warm up the mix for sure).
Nice to be included with such a great group of songs and players...I'm looking forward to Vol. 4!
Nicely Done... |

I have a request for all OFC members. If you're going to some OFC jam event, NAMM party, Cliff's backyard BBQ this weekend, Amelia, OFC tour, etc. please bring your Olympus digital recorder that you bought from Al and make some recordings. It would be really cool to include a group jam on an upcoming OFC CD. Sorta like the third LP in Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" box - ok most of you are too young to remember that. Granted, these jams probably sounded WAY better to us late at night and strumming with our drunk buddies than they ever would reproduced on disc, but why not give it a try.

And not just the excellent guitar performances (which I expected), but the vocals as well and the songwriting abilities of those who contributed original pieces.
Thanks to everyone who lent their talents to all three CDs. You've set the bar high. I've gotta practice a lot more. |

One comment on Bobbo's kid's tune though, he should be proud of that one, it's good. Very Petty-like. |

Another point that deserves to be mentioned is the way Dave put it together. It flows well and doesn't have too much of any type of song together. This is a really important point that often gets missed. |

Also I must say that Country Artist really shines "Makada"! way to go. And Lanaki's second tune is also way up there on my playlist. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Ocean Street is a true story, based in Belmar NJ. I had to adapt a few lyrics to make them fit.
The name of the street in reality is "Ocean Avenue". I lived at 1401. And Hot Dog Harry is the wagon that used to set up on the corner and sell Sabretts to the passers-by. The logo on his cart said "Harry's Dog Wagon" and his logo was a long haired wiener-dog. You got a dog and a coke (in a glass bottle) for 50 cents. "Beachcomber Way" is made up, but The Beachcomber was the name of a bar on the corner of 18th Ave. The arcade is of course "Belmar Playland". "GSP" and "Jug Handle" are are self-explanatory. If you gotta ask, you've never been to Jersey.

Ya know Cliff, we're the same age and I'll bet there's a damn good chance you are I were in those places at the same time. How strange is THAT! And Al's got some stories of trips to Belmar around that same time. Wouldn't that be stranger than hell if somehow we actually did all come in contact and never knew it until 35 years later ...

Once we were old enough to drive, there were a lot of trips to the shore, from Pt. Pleasant all the way down Long Beach Island. After the Prom it was expected that you'd go to the beach. We went to Island Beach State Park after senior prom and got my '73 Corolla stuck in the sand. During the college days we'd go down and rent rooms at some old lady's boarding house and hit the bars. That was back when the drinking age was 18 or 19. Ahh, the good old days! |
