| Hi,
I have an ovation 1657 that I am trying to fix up a bit. The neck looks slightly pulled away from the body, but it has been playing fine for the few years I've had it. I am wondering how the neck is attached, and if there should be a small gap between the neck and the body. Is there a bolt in there, or is the neck just glued on? Mine has a gap about this size of 6 pieces of paper between the body and the heel of the neck. It doesen't seem to move very much at all, but with the strings off I can close the gap a bit. So is there a problem, and if so, how do I fix it?
Also the rosette is causing a bit of buzzing every now and then, and it seems loose on one edge. Is any sort of glue fine for this, or is something special required?
thanks for all your help. |

Is epoxy a good idea for the roestte? |

| The guitar plays fine, but the neck joint is visibly seperated. I guess the main question is if the neck is in need of work or if it is safe to continue to use it the way it is. |

| ok, i will try a different question:
Should i see a screw head of some sort on the inside of the body adjacent to the heel of the neck? all i see is a hole. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | The neck is bolted on. No glue. You say it doesn't move "very much at all". It shouldn't move; it should be rock solid. Sounds like you are missing a bolt, and maybe the other one's loose.
As for the rosette, that's a common thing. Do a neat job of getting some epoxy in there. That should clear up the problem.

Location: 6 String Ranch | there was originally some filler probably around the neck joint and maybe that has come loose. The neck should be totally tight against the body. |

| It appears that there is part of a bolt in the hole, just not the important part! I guess it must have broken off at some point??? I assume the other bolt should be where the truss rod adjustment is on some guitars. What size is the head of this bolt and is it hex, or what? I cant find it and thought maybe it would be easier with the right tool. If I remove this other bolt, should the neck come off, or is the fretboard glued to the top as well as the neck?
thanks for all the help, this one will be singing again soon! |

| ok, i finally heard back from the factory, and here is what they said:
"if the neck adjustment is on the headstock then the neck is glued on."
So it seems i am NOT missing a bolt, but they just put a bolt hole on all the bodies. So gluing the neck back on is the solution. Anyone had any experience on how this differs from a wood body guitar??
thanks! |
