In great shape (apart from the missing saddle) and pretty good deal for $370.

Shipped without a bridge... You would think the seller would have mentioned that small detail.

The seller was scatty to say the least. Still I'm hoping that the Mothership can help me out.

Short term I'm wondering whether the saddle on my Elite Special will fit.

I will ask for a small refund.

Did come with a new set of Dean Marley bronze and Elixir strings :)

You should be able to get a saddle from any music store. Bring the guitar with you, as sizes and shapes vary. You may wind up having to order a blank and either file and sand it to fit, or have someone else do it for you. If you can get a plastic one that fits just right, put it in and set the action, then you will know how to shape the bone one.

@Professor, yeah the pup is there - just missing the saddle.

Would rather get a Mothership approved saddle. My local guitar shops are pretty useless.

Do you think a S868 saddle would be OK, seems to be similar in size.

So much for that idea - the S868 saddle is too big. I'm going to hold out for the Mothership to come up trumps (as they always do).

The 93C is a kind of a replacement for the Elite Special, sitting side by side they look nice together but the 93C out classes the humble S868 and makes it look less and less special.

The 93C is more solid, far superiour spruce top and has a lovely ebody fingerboard/buttons and gold hardware. Despite the fact that the top is not as sexy as say redwood or walnut the 93C does look right, a perfect blend, those guys at Ovation did something special when they designed the 93C.

Cannot wait to hear how it sounds. If it anywhere near as good as it looks then it will be awesome.

Its not a big deal to get a blank and make your own, but try to get bone it can really wake a guitar up. Back before i had done a few i would buy a couple of cheap plastic ones to pratice on before i wasted a peice of bone.I had a 93 and liked the guitar but hated the P/U. I`ve noticed some around like that P/U. Maybe its just me.

Fashioning a saddle is well out of my league, not if any OFCer would make me one (bone or otherwise) well I would be your friend for life.

I am mainly going to be recording with mics so pickups aren't an issue to me.

hoho!

Thanks for the offer but it's getting to know the other Collectors and I hate to break up such a lovely group of friends.

It's a right pain in the arse (or butt I think you guys call it) that I cannot get it strung up. Itching to play it. Ho hum, will have to slum it and play the red wood.

The only downside of cutting, ginding and polishing bone is the stinkin' smell! I wasn't prepared for the odor when I trimmed down the bone saddles on my EF75J.

Just given the 93c a damn good clean. It's in fantastic condition, amazing that it's 15 years old, it's either not been played for the last 15 years or loved.

Carnauba was is the best!

Yeah, you should wax up the bridge before stringing, fingerboard oil will work too. Contact the mutha service and they can send you one in the mail. You will have to cut it down for the right height. There must be a shop near you that can do that and if they can they may have everything you need right there.

Yup waxed the bridge, comes up nice! The epaulets are zinging now too. I think that waxing the fingerboard isn't such a bad idea either (unless someone tells me otherwise).

Then went over the 01C top with the same cloth and it's looking even more gorgeous!

I'm a bit freaked about cutting it down to the right height! I thought that's what the shims were for.

Glad you didn't wax the fingerboard yet. Don't do it. That wood has no finish on it, and wax would inhibit the OIL you should use on it. Lemon oil, linseed oil, everyone has their favorite, but definitely not wax.

I have the 93, you got an awesome deal, if that is all these are worth it is depressing. The instructions say you should wax the neck because it is an oil finish and it needs to be waxed periodically. They even recommended two different kinds of wax which I believe are floor waxes. The V neck on these are very comfortable. I have one with a bridge if you need dimensions. You should not sweat fitting a bridge I have done it. Just fine sand paper on a flat surface and a straight edge to keep it square. These are good guitars. Just amazing the market right now is ready soft to say the least.

Sorry if I'm being dumb but why all the talk of sanding etc? I thought I could get a saddle from the Mothership that would drop right in. Why do I need to sand, surely the saddle would be the right size. If it needed to be higher then add some shims. What am I missing?

An off the shelf saddle from the factory should fit "OK" and you can shim it to the proper height. Sorta like buying a pair of pants off the rack.

But for the best fit, custom tailoring is the way to go. For best intonation, action, etc. a good luthier will start with a slightly oversized saddle and sand it to perfection.

I've done some myself and not done too badly.

The saddle will be the right width so it won't wobble around. It will be the right length so it will properly fit the slot. It won't be the right height. That has to be done for each guitar individually, so that's where you sand.

So stick it in string up and see what the actions like right? If it's too high, sand. Too low, shim.
Right?

With a bone nut (if you can get one), I would try to get the height/action right w/o shims as the sound from the p/u will be better if the saddle is sitting on the p/u rather than shims...
If you have a ruler (metal is best) you can tape the saddle to the side with a bit of the bottom edge hanging below the edge and sand on a flat piece of fine grit sandpaper taped to a table top if you sand in increments you should be able to get the correct height/action w/o removing too much of the saddle.
Did the picture's of the auction show the saddle in the guitar? I'd contact the seller to see if it dropped out during shipping...very strange...

Just trying to get a regular saddle let alone a bone one. The thing looks unhappy unstrung. And I'm dying to play it!

The auction pics aren't great so it's hard to tell. I have asked the seller if he has it but bear in mind this is someone who not only excepted just $370 for it but shipped it just in the case, no extra padding / box etc.

For the little money I paid I cannot complain I guess but it would have been nice to have it arrive ready to roll.

Mothership still hasn't replied to my request. Argh!

MS sent me a bridge and so did the seller. They are different so will go with the one from MS.

I was expecting to see 6 little grooves on it for the strings but there are no there. Normally would a luthier add little grooves or can I use it as is?

Guitar tech says saddle is down and 93C is good to go!

Picking up tomorrow, awesome - off to restring the 01C. Making really good progress with "Anu" (Adrian Legg)

Might even get the old beast (1537) out this weekend :)
