Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | They are even prettier in person. The rosette is inlaid, and the wood that shows through, because of the sunburst finish, looks gold. These are honestly the very prettiest guitars I have ever seen, they sound great for a small bodied guitar, they are immensely COMFORTABLE, and this one PLUGS IN! If I hadn't ordered that custom longneck, this would be on the way to me already. Someone should grab this NOW, (so later on when my finances are better I can buy it from them...) |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | After they were done making the '97 Collector's, there were a few parlor sized bowls left. They couldn't make them the same as the '97C because it was '98, and that run had finished, so they made them with a 14 fret paddle head, and gave them that beautiful sunburst finish.
$800 may sound like a lot of money, but these are RARE, and well worth the money. |

I've currently got, let's see, 5 different Ovation parlor models. Finding a 5741 in excellent condition is dammed difficult. Finding one for less than a thousand is even more so.
Both the '97 Collector and the 5741 look like good deals to me.
And Dave, I'm still waiting for you to pick up one of those Japanese models for me... |

Location: SoCal | Not here to pick up a fight BUT someone else may feel that it is worth $800 or more...what do members of this forum feel it is worth? $200,$400, $600? What did you base that on? Is there an esteemed book available? Is it how it compares against a Martin, Collings, etc.? This guitar could easily hold its own against a guitar costing over $2,000.
How do we value an item (house, car, guitar, etc.)...by comparables (when available). What is the method when there aren't comparables? Maybe your valuation is based on what you will do with the guitar such as stage, home, or collector. Well, want do you want (or can) to pay?
Several times I have paid higher than what previous comparables sold for...I was happy. In fact, when I paid $12,500 (cash, no trade involved) for #50 (pre-production slothead) I was honored that a friend offered it to me and ecstatic that he accepted the offer that I could make (even though it is worth more). #50 is 35 years old and is a 9.8 of 10.
We have an absurd market out there. It will be absurd until people are back at work, confident that they will not be laid off, etc. I know, that if I ever want to sell one of my guitars, I will not lose money and I will have had years of enjoyment.
It would be interesting if those making pricing statements would back it up with the specific basis for their judgement, as well as what makes them the definitive 'expert'. Over 8,600 other members would like to know. |

If Smokey is right, there are loads of inexpensive Ovation parlors out there just waiting for me to scoop them up.
But Dave, I don't expect one of those Japanese market models to come cheap should you come across one. |

...We have an absurd market out there. It will be absurd until people are back at work, confident that they will not be laid off, etc. Many People are getting spoilt by purchasing guitars from desperate people.
Before the recent (3 year) economic changes, $800 would have been considered a DEAL for a 97C.
In January 2008 I paid $600 for a used Elite T with a gig bag...
Then four months later bought a NEW T with a case and a warranty for $602.
I have recently bought and sold LX's for less than $500.
That is not what these guitars should be worth.
That is just the "Going Rate".
If there is an economic rebound, that 97C may suddenly be a good deal again.
Remember, people who buy Ovations from brick-n-mortar stores are paying $700+ for Korean O's without a case. |

It would be interesting if those making pricing statements would back it up with the specific basis for their judgement, as well as what makes them the definitive 'expert'. I agree that it is overpriced today at $800. I base this on what I see on the local CL and KSL.com ads, and my personal experience trying to sell or trade guitars. This is due to what you accurately describe as an absurd market.
The parlor is a great guitar, and a very nice condition used one should fetch $1k or more in a healthy market. It is a remarkably nice sounding guitar with the typical excellent USA Ovation craftsmanship.
The only reason it is not worth more than $800 today is that it cannot be resold for more than $800 next week. The 6778LX in mint condition that I paid $700 for about four years ago can't even generate phone calls today at $500. It is a far better guitar than $500 should command.
If someone wants a nice parlor to keep and love, and if one of those two is in excellent condition, the price is a bargain. If someone wants to sample a parlor for a few months and then resell it, those prices are risky.
The only thing I am the definitive expert on is my opinion. |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I am basing my "it is worth $800" on the fact that I owned one once for a short time. (Maybe babysat would be a better word.) Believe me, if I hadn't been obligated to give it up after a year, I would still own it, never sell it, play it every day, and cherish it always. If I weren't a bit overextended right now, I would happily pay $800 for this one. As a matter of fact, even though it would not be wise to spend the money right now, I am considering it anyway. I LOVED that guitar! |

If it was mine, I would not sell it. Yeah, I think that's an Elite Prototype, not a Japanese market specific model like the P777 and the P778's.
I actually have a parlor Elite - PG18-X. Posted a couple of pics of it on the ning site but haven't been able to transfer copies here.
And no, it's not for sale. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | I'm only an expert of my personal opinion also, and based on a comparison of other Ovation guitars selling today, I wouldn't give over $600 for one. They're smaller and took less materials to make, and they ARE used. I saw one sell not too long ago on Ebay for about 450, and I've seen Adamas IIs going for around $800+. I know, I know, they're probably great instruments and are much better than their non-O counterparts, and are considered rare, but in todays market I don't see them worth much more than 600. If they're such a great deal at $800, then why haven't they been snatched up by now? The one in Syracuse has been on the market for quite some time now and hasn't sold. JUST my opinion. If someone disagrees with my opinion, PLEASE prove me wrong and buy one of these for yourself. My feelings won't be hurt (: |

Location: Phoenix AZ | The answer to the question probably depends what your real need is. If you need (want) a parlor guitar for some specific reason, in my opinion there are far better ones than an Ovation. But if you are an Ovation geek and want to add a different flavor of roundback to your collection than the 97 Collector is pretty cool. |
