"Made for Hohner by the same people who craft guitars for Ovation."

Is there any truth in that statement?

I played a 6-string version in a store once. I wasn't impressed. Never seen a 12, but at a starting bid of $499, it will probably still be there for a while if anyone wants to take a shot at it… ;)

If they mean underpaid exploited laborers in Asia... Maybe. :p

That's what I alluded to… although I agree with your more succinct appraisal, Al… ;)

That part I suspected. It's true of most imports. I was just curious if there was any factual evidence to support that claim.

A guy who owns a local store recently told me that he occasionally gets a 335-style import guitar with a headstock from brand A and a body shape from brand B, (totally separate parent companies) but they are so similar that very few people even notice…

I contacted Hohner awhile back to see about purchasing just the bowl of one of these to see if I could make some sort of abomination out of it... they didn't even know what I was talking about. It wasn't until several emails later from their Korean counterpart that I found out these are made overseas and distributed by Hohner.

And no they won't sell just the bowl > :(

As an Hohner endorer for a few years, I have 3 of these, 2 sixes & a 12 & yes, there was some problems with Hohner & Ovation about these intsruments..they were Hohner 'top of the line' guitars for a while until the threat of a lawsuit pulled them off the market..they are very nice & very rare...I believe they are Japanese made..the yra ran around a grand each...old Hohner page link...me with 6 & 12...Dan

I think it is possible they were made by the same folks who made the import Os..but not positive..
From what I understand there are only a few BIG places there that make instrument for many US companies..Samick being the largest...my thoughts

Sorry if we insulted you or your former patron, Dan…

Conceptually, that Hohner seems like a good idea, (albeit a stolen one.) I only played one in a store for a little while, but to me, it sounded inferior to an average Celebrity model, yet cost more.

Then there's this… Doesn't this fit in the "so wrong, yet so right" category also:

Eastwood Breadwinner

Yeah Standing... When the Eastwood Breadweiner Clones came out, I was thinking that maybe you could get the Eastwood and put an Ovation neck on it.
But for the money that Eastwood wants for the Clone, you can get a real one and fix it up. :p

Just to be clear, the bowl-back above is/was made by Hohner, but that "Breadwinner" is made by (for?) Eastwood Guitars…

"Ovation®" and "Ultra®-GP" are specifically mentioned in the side-bar on that one…
