If you wanna check out some seriously nice inlay work. Have a look at this company!!
They had a double-neck for sale a while back and when I saw it, my jaw dropped. There must have been MONTHS of inlaying on it.
Apparently they build them in Canada and ship them over to Indonesia for the inlay work. Mastercraftsmen... no word of a lie!!
Ooooooh, that acoustic bass has got me jones-ing, lol
Check 'em out!! |

TJ once had a 'bat' motiff BB. Maybe he can give ya his impressions.
They sure are pretty though... |

These are traditional Balinese carvers, right? Isn't that the point, that they carve these guitars in a 'traditional' way?
I am amazed at their skill, but to try and superimpose our 'western' ideas onto how they go about their business doesn't really seem practical.
I did notice that the price of these guitars has gone up three-fold since they first appeared on eBay, and I would hope that that price rise would be passed on down the line to the people at the 'sharp end' of the construction.
Do they make as much as people on the line at the OVATION factory... I doubt it, but they do get to live in Bali which is something I often wish for... in January, lol. |

And before someone throws stones because these guys make $200 a month...
What does it cost to live where they live.
I told some of my friends that I made $6.25/hr in Tennessee... And was quite satisfied.
They thought that was outrageous slave wages!
But I was renting a two bedroom mobile home for $200!
Those guys ain't working on an assembly line, and they are working free-hand.
It looks like fun work if you can get it.

we could all be sitting on a blue tarp in a factory with no shoes no gloves no safety equipment in a pile of dust and dirt with no heat or ac making peanuts.
sorry I don't buy it. This just disgusting. Traditional? are you kidding me? the tools are traditional but this is clearly a factory not an artist in a loft making art.
The standard of living and expenses are low? is that a joke? I think in the US we called that slavery until it was outlawed here is is just "business"
sorry but the video makes me sad and want to throw up my lunch |

It's probably been done that way for generations, guitars just being another medium. If the workers thought they could be better craftsmen in a recliner or even a hammock, I'm fairly sure they would have designed and build one.
As to worker safety... ever wear goggles/face shield, gloves and steel-toed shoes/boots to change your oil? That's not counting the OSHA requirements for disposal, spill containment and mandatory paperwork/reports.
These are craftsmen that know what they're doing. I saw no missing limbs, no powered tools nor other signs of an unsafe environment.
Yes, I do hope that they are earning enough to support their families, afford some 'luxuries' and are respected within THEIR society.
It's somewhat amusing that some folk desire hand craftsmanship and bad mouth CAM cookie cutting. Then, flip the coin, some complain about the variances in manufacturing and demand CAM accuracy. Can't please everyone... |

| Never been to Bali, but have traveled extensively over Asia. Working conditions for the vast majority of people are absolutely appalling by ANY standards, much less Western.
Yeah, they may have a job, but it's barely subsistence wages, even by their standard of living, and there are no benefits (pensions, paid vacations, sick leave, assistance with medical care, workman's comp, etc.) that we expect from our employers. Even in the more modernized areas there's no such thing as workplace safety. Ya think anybody that puts melamine (a poison) in infant formula to make it test out at a higher protein content gives a shit about exposure of their employees to workplace hazards? And the situation gets worse for smaller businesses.
You say you cut your hand while carving, bad enough that you can't work? Tough shit, you don't get paid until you come back. What's that? Got an infection from that cut? Hey, hope you don't get gangrene from it, that would suck to lose your hand, 'cause then you'd be begging on the street corner. Good luck with that, since you don't have the coin for some antibiotics.
I'm all for making money, but not at the expense of people's lives and health. I'm with Al all the way on this one. |

isn't that what the civil war was about?
workers were working 8-10 hours a day and receiving room, board, and medical care for free (in exchange for the labor).
We thought it was barbaric in our own country so why is it different there? I am sure the craftsman just love carving for 8+ hours a day.
and are you really a craftsman and artist when you are following a design that someone else drew up and you get to copy or replicate it over and over?
I can almost guarantee that the marketers/owners are making a mint more than the poor workers are.
I'd rather support what many consider the overpriced Collings, Merrills, etc where at least the workers are making a good wage.
rant over (for now). |

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA | Well, I said I thought I'd get my ass kicked... Didn't think I was stepping on a landmine!!
OK, to set the record straight (again!!)...
- I have NO vested interest in the Blueberry guitar company (are you f--king kidding me). They are based in St. Laurent, Quebec, which although, is... technically in Canada... anyone that knows anything about North America should know that Quebec might as well be on the moon as far as most Manitobans (or Canadians in general...) are concerned!!
- Secondly, I don't like to see anyone exploited either, but if you think that what you are seeing in that video is anything like the exploitation going on in other parts of the world you are, sadly mistaken... There are places in Africa and Asia where the same scene would include ALL of them being in chains, with guns to their heads... NO ONE would be paid ANYTHING and NO ONE would be allowed to leave!! They would work there in the semi-darkness... until they DIED!! That is SLAVERY.
I am aware that their economy bears no resemblance to ours, but ours used to look a lot like that in the 1840's as well. It might be 2010 here, but for all intents and purposes... it's 1840 there. Would I like to see the workers paid an equitable share of the companies profits... of course I would!! It would eat in to my bottom line, being that I own such a large chunk of the company (tongue firmly in cheek here...), but I digress...
- To whether these guitars are beautiful or ugly, all depends on whether you like Balinese-style carving. Some people LOVE it and others HATE it. I only mentioned Blueberry guitars because I thought, being a Canadian company some of you might not have heard about them. But of course, many of you have them in your substantial collections (or did...) and can give me a lesson on them...
I am humbled once again...
Sorry for mentioning it. Someone said this is a 'guitar forum'... I did get that part right, at least. |

It is all about being responsible with your purchases.
Yes this is a guitar forum and yes we have opinions here and yes they may not be the ones you want to hear.
Is this going on with other companies? absolutely.
Show me some proof of it with others and I will absolutely slam their business as well.
This to me is a moral issue not if you like the instruments or not. Personally I can tell you I have played them at Namm and they did not do much for me but that is meaningless. If you like VW and I like BMW who cares they both take you to the store to buy your guitar |

But it also applies to sneakers, sweatshirts, all the T-shirts from Bangladesh, any guitar made in any third-world country including anywhere in Asia (except Japan)...
The only countries that have 'Western' standards are the US, Canada, Australia and some of the countries in Europe.
So when you woke-up this morning... your alarm clock, coffee maker, toaster and microwave were all probably made in a sweat shop in China. (I know mine were) |

Not every company has sweatshops. That is a blanket statement. Please show some proof of that statement.
I am not saying that all working conditions in the world are comparable to the US but there are some that are obviously worse than others. I know that working conditions in Korea are not like the ones shown in the video. How you can make all these statements about these countries? I need more than a statement you need to be able to back this stuff up
I imagine there should be no problem in nude worship if it is sincere. Although some worship sites smay be more pleasing than others. |

Most of my jobs suck... That is why they give me money and call it 'Work'...
These guys will make you ANY kind of guitar that you\'d like....
Stack \'em up... Roll \'em out!
Disclaimer... I ain't saying these people ain't well paid, nor that they don't like their jobs.
You do what you've gotta do. And in this worldwide economy, the Asians will usually do it cheaper. But that is only because of the exchange rate of the USD. Once our dollar goes down the toilet we won't be able to afford their stuff and we have no factories to make our own. Then the Germans and the Australians will be complaining about the cheap sweatshop labor in the USA.

Location: Las Vegas, NV | My 2-cents (and it's probably worth less): The workers in the video appear to be working in poor conditions, but do not appear to be "forced" to work here. Therefore, they must have chosen this job over whatever the alternative would have been for them, if there even was an alternative. Could conditions be better? Sure, but this would likely either raise the end price of the product, or cut into the company's profits. Since we have no real proof what the company keeps or pays to its workers (much like the El Salvadorean tag on the t-shirt isn't proof it was made in a sweatshop), it's all speculation. But one thing seems to be likely: if these workers didn't have THIS job, they would have to take a lesser job, or possibly even no job.
So, while we can all agree that this job isn't ideal, it is likely better than the alternatives available to them. |

We all have our own opinions about what is right and wrong, and that is the beauty of living in the countries that we do. We are all entitled to our own opinions.
I don't want to imply that free speech should be stifled, or some sort of censorship should be enforced, but can we put a stop to this conversation if for no other reason than to prevent the creation of yet another divide for us to bicker over? Let's keep the friendships friendly here people :) |

All I did was mention some intricate inlaying and carving I thought some of you might like to see and... BOOM!! I'm a robber baron, capitalist exploiter of the poor barefoot, third world indigents...
Being that I am something of an oddity in Canada, in that my viewpoints are 'somewhat' conservative (but that would probably just make me a Democrat... if I stepped over the border), and I'm pretty dark on socialism and all hippy-dippy-trippy free-spending nonsense that goes along with that...).
I am very much FOR the environment and TOTALLY anti-corporate scumbag (especially the big, American companies that INVENTED that style of doing business...). Al has named some of those already... we ALL know WHO they are.
For the first twenty-odd years of my life, I was a card-carrying member of the New Democratic Party (NDP)... which are lovingly referred to as 'lefty, commie radicals...' by the Republicans in the US (it embarrasses me to admit to that now...). In fact my father was a union organizer for most of his life, which is where I learned that mindset is the 'road to hell', and I now try to avoid it at all costs.
My views are VERY centre-ist and humanist now, so to be painted as some kind of capitalist exploiter by any American is sooooooooo ironic, lol.
For future posts, I will try an experiment... playing the 'devil's advocate' and expressing NOTHING but opinions that any granola-munching lefty would take no exception whatsoever to.
I am willing to bet, that I will still be set upon by ALL the same people (no matter what side of the argument I take...).
Let's play... :D |

Also, I think it is speculation that these workers don't prefer working without safety equipment, benches, shoes, etc. Much of what I see in the public works construction industry is not preferred by the workers, but is rather forced on the contractor by government beaurocracy, all in the name of "doing something" to "protect" the worker. Some of it is great and necessary. Much of it is a paperwork nightmare that makes a project cost twice what it normally would.
So (with all due respect), if you had your way, would you impose the U.S. system of safety regulations on this Balinese industry, possibly raising the costs to the point where it wouldn't be profitable to keep the business (my speculation now). Then where would these workers be? The less preferable job (as discussed earlier) or unemployed?
Could working conditions be better? Again, yes. But, it's never that cut and dry... |

If asking for people to be treated fairly and with some sort of dignity and respect is imposing "us systems of safety regulations" then so be it.
I don't like seat belts yet I am by law forced to wear one. does it save lives sure, does my medical insurance go down because I wear one no.
We can't dump oil from our motor out onto the street without a fine either. but if it leaks out it is ok.
I did not speculate the workers were paid substandard wages for their local wage. show me exactly where I said that? Or that I said the company was not sharing profits etc.
As for the workers preferring to work barefoot on the floor etc. I hope the next time you get a cheese burger the cook prefers NOT to wash his hands after he dropped a deuce. |

I really wasn't speaking for you, but merely asked you what you would do.
Right, you did not make the speculation about wages or company profits. I believe someone else made that point.
Now, regarding your comment about the cheeseburger and the "deuce," are we now equating food health safety (for the public at large) with occupational safety (for the worker)? Not the same thing. One protects the general public from the actions of an employee of a company providing a service. The other protects the employee from.......himself. |

Makes sense. Wouldn't want to have to commit two days in a row to something. If they end up leaving to much time between protests they might have to go out and find a job or something.
And it seems like they draw something out of a hat to determine the "cause of the day". Is that the new term for "choosing your battles"? |

Then where would these workers be? The less preferable job (as discussed earlier) or unemployed?
Don't know where the workers would be... but the jobs might be here instead of overseas...

Then we protest the Police, or the WTO, or for Pot, or just have a free concert in the square! A bunch of citizens who protest... every other day.
Makes sense. Wouldn't want to have to commit two days in a row to something. If they end up leaving to much time between protests they might have to go out and find a job or something.
And it seems like they draw something out of a hat to determine the "cause of the day". Is that the new term for "choosing your battles"? They also clog up the traffic downtown and generally annoy and inconvenience everyone in the area.
Wonder why they're not at work? Oh, yeah...
We also have a lovely group of anarchists who ride their bikes through downtown at 5pm specifically to cause problems. Our last mayor rode with them... Yeah, it's a great town. "Havana on the Willamette". |

but,... If people have a rant or information pertaining to guitars, lets post it in the general section and leave the "for sale" section for the members that actually have something for sale. |

I dunno drop a sharp chisel on a bare foot and I guess you are out of work for a while. walk home barefoot get it infected.
bring back the industrial revolution when we had adults working 12 hour days 6 days a week and kids working along side them for 1/3 wages.
but I want my cheap carved up git fiddle

[/QB] |

I am trying to follow this debate, but I got lost at the line, "... after he dropped a deuce...". Is this an inherently American expression for some type of bodily function (wee wees perhaps?).
I have never heard this before... Can it be translated into Canadian?
(NO AL... Drop the cleaver.... back away from it slowly, lol) |

slowly, lol) I'm guessing that "deuce" = "two" = "Number twos" which means its the other option from wee wees. It doesn't translate well into Australian either. Over here it would be "Strangled a darkie", "dropped a bomb", "cracked a turd", or anyone of about 100 charming expressions. |

It started out about Balinese carving... meandered into labour exploitation... reminiscing about dear old dad... lefties on bikes... a discussion about multi-cultural pooping...
All we need now is Terry Gilliam to animate the transitions and we have a Monty Python episode!!
I think I finally understand... There is order inside the chaos :D |

Oooh, quite the thread, thanks Keith - by the way, we split the money 50/50 with the Balinese and it was the Balinese that posted the video because they are proud of their work.
Anyhow, there is no pleasing all the people all the time, so we just march onward.

Pays Balinese minimum wage ($2 day). Benefits include one unpaid holiday per year, free wood shavings, and annual malaria shot. Must provide own tools, tarp to work on, and should be able to take a good beating, or be willing to learn. Must be willing to undergo routine drug testing, as we find that drugs make working conditions that much more bearable. |

Then someone involves the importer of these guitars for no reason at all but to throw more logs on the fire.
how about taking this whole mess to dingleberryguitarfanclub.bomb? oops that does not exist why? probably not enough interest, so go from site to site posting stuff for sale trying to increase interest in an item. Wow marketing in the cyberworld. |

I don't think it's any kind of plot (as has been suggested...). It's just an innocently posted thread about Balinese carving (that most of you seem to hate.... which is cool) that got ridiculously out of hand and took on a life of it's own.
Hope I'm not going to get the blame for it going into extra innings here.

You do seem rather intent upon playing martyr though and talking about yourself a lot - what’s that about.
I don’t think that anyone is out to get you so much as you think they are - it’s more like you just keep setting things up to look that way |

NOR was I trying to speak for you. I know you are very articulate and can do that yourself. I was simply offering my take on why you might have allowed the thread to degenerate as far as it did.
I hope you also noticed that it wasn't a 100% slam-dunk with everyone simply agreeing with your position.
And let me be even MORE clear here... I don't necessary disagree with you on this!! I don't know enough about the company to presume anything and although you are obviously comfortable basing your position on what you saw in that video... I am not.
In the other video link provided, the shop looks pretty much like every other guitar shop I have been in... Maybe the selection of power tools is a bit slim, but they didn't really look particularly downtrodden to me.
Until I go over there and see for myself, I will reserve judgement and continue to believe EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion...
If you feel that anything I have said ANYWHERE is this thread is unreasonable, or biased or derogatory to ANYONE, please feel free to point it out. |

You started this thread in the for sale section. Yet you do not have the guitar for sale. So ultimately if you like the guitar and are interested in the bass buy one. Otherwise what is the need for the commercial?
you made a statement the guitars are made in canada. I found no evidence of that. All I can find is that they are designed by a certain luthier. Unless you have evidence of the contrary you are giving false information
Not everyone has to agree with me. I do not expect nor demand that. I have my opinion from the information provided me. From my vantage point in good conscience i could not buy nor play one of those instruments.
As a consumer I can spend my $$$ where I feel benefits me most. As a result bp exxon wallmart and a few others do not get my hard earned dollars if I can help it. My point and only point is that after seeing that video, the thought of owning one of those guitars is repulsive to me. Your mileage may vary since it is in kilometers.
I have been to many factories and worked in a few myself, Some had bad conditions, none looked like that.
I pointed out where you spoke for me, If anyone else has issues with your statements they can speak for themselves.
Overall I think with a few exceptions the discussion on this thread has been rather civil. As we become a world economy these types of issues will be coming up all the time. I feel you must let your heart and conscience be your guide. |

You are 100% correct. These guitars are NOT made in Canada (I was misinformed) and this was clarified eloquently by War Eagle.
My intention was not to host an 'info-mercial' for these guitars and I (like many others here...) am still not decided whether I even like the design or not. I simply wanted to point out a level of carving and inlaying skill not seen on many other guitars. Can we all agree that these Balinese carvers are good at what they do? I would hope so...
As pointed out by several people, the build quality of the actual guitar itself doesn't appear to be that high (thank you Beal...). Without having tried one, there is no way I could know this... One of the reasons I appreciate having so many informed opinions in one forum. Thanks, to those of you that at least tried to review the guitar without getting personal.
I have promised the mods, that I will NOT in future bring any non-OVATION or unrelated items to the attention of this forum (fair enough?).
I would however, like clarification as to whether OVATION-made products for sale (but not for sale by myself...) are allowed. To my mind acting as a 'finder' for these sometimes rare items is a service and should be permissible...
Thanks |

If it truly is "rare" or "unique" or "special", then yeah it's acceptable and appreciated. What's not appreciated are post after post after post - mostly from noobs - highlighting the latest CraigsList or eBay listing for yet another 1617 Legend or mid-'80s Balladeer. EVERYBODY knows how to use the Internet to search, and the only thing these types of posts do is push LEGITIMATE offers for sale or Wanted-to-Buy posts by MEMBERS down off the page, never to be seen again by potential respondents. |

Unfortunately this company is a hot button topic and people feel passionate about it. Post another brand and you may get 3 responses.
there is a guy in north jersey who is/was a mail man and was featured on "queer eye for the straight guy" He bought old beat up martins, guild, gibsons etc and did a similar sort of carving on the tops. I have seen several of his guitars and they are not exactly my thing. BUT the difference is that he is an artist doing original works on quality instruments.
I have played tons of guitars in my life, maybe more than the average person has played. I can tell you that you can use the finest woods and specifications but if it is not put together in the right way it is not quality. there are some exceptions sure.
As I see more and more of my friends lose their jobs and see long time US companies go overseas (the latest for me is the Penn fishing reel company) I cannot but be infuriated by seeing these carvers in sub par conditions building building guitars. In a perfect world I would love to see good quality student grade instruments made in the usa at affordable prices. I guess that ship has sailed |

Fair enough.
I think most people here would find it extremely hard to decide what is 'rare' or 'special' enough to take the risk of enraging the mods or the general population.
What is rare enough or special enough to one may be nothing at all, the higher you go up the 'food chain'.
I for one, will not be doing this anymore as it isn't worth the trouble...
If I see something 'special', I'll just buy it and send you a picture :D |

Bingo!!
I bought a very early one several years ago...#7 if I recall...lousy is the word that comes to mind as far as the fit and finish...I sent it right back...I had not seen the video until Al posted it...why am I not surprised...the carving is the only part of the guitar that is remotely cool...that said, in a world of fine guitars, IMHO, these should have been left on the beach...in the surf...at high tide...just my $.02
BTW, these are made in Bali and imported, strung, and shipped from Canada... |

You may be the first Old Fart they meet, so be cordial. :D |

I have never heard this before... Can it be translated into Canadian?
slowly, lol) I'm guessing that "deuce" = "two" = "Number twos" which means its the other option from wee wees. It doesn't translate well into Australian either. Over here it would be "Strangled a darkie", "dropped a bomb", "cracked a turd", or anyone of about 100 charming expressions. Strangled a darkie?
I love this forum!
For sale, huh?
Did I mention that I bought another LX? :) |

In BOLD RED writing at the top;
"This part of the Bulletin Board is open to posting for New Members and Moderators ONLY."
Check the last word - it's in CAPITALS, so we can hear it clearly.
And the latter paragraph - still in red, but not bold (and no shouting) is a further polite request;
"While the general membership can post in this thread due to software limitations, they are encouraged NOT to."
What Miles is saying there is that he is unable to lock the general membership out of that section due to software limitations, but if he could, he would. So he's requesting that unless you're a moderator, keep your comments out of there.
I know that a number of members question WHY the Welome Center is there and how its supposed to prevent another meltdown, but the owners of the site want it so.
So be it.
FWIW, I also slip under the radar occasionally and pop in there to offer assistance and outing trolls. I know its naughty, but I'm a helpful, naughty 50 year old kid.
If I popped in there and told Mr Williams/Mr Rivers/Ms Heather to f@ck off, I don't think I'd be under the radar any more... |

So I never go there anymore.
Just trying to help out. |

Sort of like screening people at your front door to make sure they don't track dog crap into your house.
So far I would say the system seems to be working well. With the exception of Willams and Avatar everyone seems to be playing very nice and the forum has definatey turned into a kinder gentler home for the new demographic that the owners want to attract. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | And then the song;
(A)I stepped in dog shit and got it on your floor
And that's the reason you don't (E)love me anymore(A)
It's just a small spot and a little on the rug
But that's the reason you don't (E)want to kiss and hug(A)
(D)It ain't my fault Babe, don't blame it on me
(A)It's your dog and you let it just run free
(D)I walk to your house every single night
(E)It's not my fault your yard don't have a light
(A)Your lawyer called and they want to send the cops
Unless I pay you both (E)everything I got(A)
What's going on here, whatchew trying to do?
You hang with lawyers you're gonna (E)get it on your shoes(A)
(D)So go on now leave me here along
(A)Don't try calling I won't answer the phone
(D)I've had enough of all your screaming fits
(E)And your damn lawyer and your dog and all his shit |

In the middle I take a break that starts in A, then G, B, F, C, D, E and back to the top and the third verse. |

My new year's resolution was to start writing songs, so I wrote one. After a week I looked at it and hated it, so now I have to start over again. Damn. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I really like the song, Beal. My thought on the judge song would be some takeoff of the lawyer joke:
Q. "What do you call a lawyer with an IQ of 40?"
A. "Your Honor." I might get in trouble for that one, though.
I found some lyrics of a song I started a long time ago and they weren't too bad, but I never wrote anything down regarding a melody. This weekend my brother showed me a whole notebook of songs he started writing when he was in a band in the 80s. He did manage to finish one for his wedding. I noticed that the last song I learned in my notebook was one I learned for our wedding. Must be some correlation there. |

you could reverse to "And your dog and your damn lawyer and all his shit" when you play it when Mark is around. |

"Why do they bury lawyers 10 feet deep?"
"Because deep down, they are good people." |

We might be doomed, but I'd rather be right than stoop to the level of the tactics that the other side's lawyers have resorted to. .... Long story, not for here.
OTOH, I finally figured out Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" after working on SRV's "Crossfire". The tuning to Eb did it as I could vocalize at a half step lower and finally figured it out. I'm mostly an electric player, but it works on acoustic. Could make an interesting medley.
Yeah, I know. I'll go back to lurking. |

If you ever get into litigation you also want to have the nastiest prick you can find on your side as well, but he's the front man and disposable. |
