Affter reading all about the banjo bashing in the other topic.. It made me think... "Does anyone play blugrass w. an Ovation Guitar..?"
I know the BG crowd is a tight group of musicians/guitar players that can't seem to accept non-traditional guitars .. Oh well...

Maybe these have been shared before... though.. not much flat picking going on...

You Tube Clip 1

You Tube Clip 2

.. I also have some old VHS video clips of the Mark Pruett band playing on an old TNN show. I believe the guitar player played a black elite (1537?) I also think I may have a pic or two of them playing at the Ovation Factory in N.C. .. I need to get them digitized..

'Jewel's Mom' seems to get away with it.

And the banjo bashing is all in good fun. It stops us taking aim at the ukulele players.

Check this out:

Bill Harrell & Adamas

Harrell played Adamas from the late 70's until the early 90's. Always acoustic-only models, miked.

That would be Steve Sutton, aka Debanjo Rheinhardt.

Tony Rice played a Ovation Legend in the early 80's, and most of the Manzanita albumn was recorded using it. I understand that he still owns that one.

I get away with a whole lot--the Ovation I usually use is an electric!! (The Tornado.) Yes, I know it's really not allowed, but the guys know about the bursitis and cut me some slack. If we're playing in a place where we have to be all acoustic (outside, no power) then I take lots of ibuprophen and use Gertrude. I usually get some surprised looks or comments until I hand them my guitar and they actually play it--then they usually don't have a lot to say unless it's "Wow, this is such a nice guitar to play. Can't believe the action; it's so easy." :D

The thing the pictures don't show is the Marshall half stack behind Steve. You got to have a sense of humor. Those were taken at the company picnic at the Marion NC factory.

The peach was the best.

Those are elites, a -4 and -5. The -4 had a crack in the top. I brought it by and they fixed it and sent it back to Steve. Brown cracked it again so this summer I brought it up again and it was repaired and hand delivered back. Works good but the neck is too skinny.

The -4 is a 1537. What's interesting about it is that while it has the standard neck inlays, it's got the same epaulets as Beal's and Campbell's first 2 prototypes.

I rescanned portions of each pic at 1200 DPI... Not too much more detail to gain...

"it's got the same epaulets as Beal's and Campbell's first 2 prototypes." Whats the specific difference?

Don't forget the "Strawberry" boys.....but I am still partial to the original "Clear". A little burn in tha belly serves ya well, especially on a crisp autumn eve! ;)

Very...interesting fact, I've seen an ad for TRice w/ Ovation.. FRETS I think. I have that CD and never knew that.. I need to listen to it again...I assumed it was his Clarence White Martin or similar since that is what seems to be pictured on the cover..

I also located these items in the "archives" though I cannot actually listen to them since I no longer have a working turntable. uugh! Would be nice to get them(and all my other LPs) into the MP3 player..

Most people are not aware that Tony recorded with the Ovation. They had a trivia question on his web site some time ago, and had people guess which songs he used it on. I can't remember the results, but most of the album was recorded with the Ovation. If anyone has listened to it, you know how good it sounded. I've had the album for many years. It does show Tony with the old Martin, but he uses the Santa Cruz almost exclusively, now.

The web still amazes me... I found the link mentioned earlier

http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:YnauWxmCstQJ:www.tonyrice.com/...

seems to start with this topic

"On a different note, speaking of questions... I saw an old advertisement recently for Ovation guitars that featured Tony's picture on it playing an Ovation. Got me wondering what the deal with that was? Just curious!
