Hi I am new to the fanclub just found out about you guys when I started to consider the selling of my 'old pal'. Unfortunately my '78 Custom Balladeer just isn't what I need now that I am going to be playing live. I really need something with a pick-up and pre-amp. The guitar is basically mint other than a ding in the finish with two hairline finish cracks that resulted from a beer bottle dropped on it the first day I owned it, which is now twelve years ago (ah the memerories). I just don't have the money to hang onto it as well as buy the guitar that I would need for playing live.

I guess I am looking for some feedback on if I do sell it what kind of price I should be looking for (sound wise anything that compares is $1000 or more), but I know I probably wouldn't get that for it (maybe I am wrong). I thought about putting a pick up in it and a guy at the guitar store said "don't you dare you'll ruin that old baby". I guess I would also be open to trades if someone had the right guitar for me. The guitar also comes with an Ovation black moulded case.

Put a Martin thinline or LR Baggs p/u in it with no controls and an out thru the endpin. Won't hurt the guitar at all and will sound great.

A different guy at the guitar store said the same thing, and was concerned about not having a pre-amp or any controls. He said that you can get pre-amps that attach to your strap and don't need to be installed. How the hell does that work and would the Martin and Baggs p/u come with such a feature.

Why do you want a preamp with controls on your guitar? It'll be out of date in a year. Get a Fishman Preamp or something similar, set the sound you want, and forget it. You'll be happy with this setup.

Isn't it the sound guys fault or responsibility to fiddle the sound? You'll find you have a real even spread on the sound anyway.

You may also need to try an Elite LX, Legend LX and Elite T just to see whats been happening lately.

Get a foot pedal if you want some control.

I use a BOSS GE-7 Equalizer. It has a gain control on it.

I use it on my 1972 Pacemaker 12 string which has a Martin Thinline in it. It helps beef up the lows and mids.
There are several other brands which will work also.
