Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | Mike found out today that he has a paralyzed right vocal chord. Hopefully he will recover in 6 to 18 months. He may have to undergo a reversible procedure or two to prevent aspiration in the interim.
He is very grateful that his neck and left arm pain has been eliminated. At least now he can play guitar with no discomfort.
Heal up, Mike! Prayers and healing mojo out for ya... |

Apparently he's heard me sing before because he responded, "If you even try, I will personally come after your vocal cords with a dull, rusty scalpel." :eek: |

Good luck and do what the docs say. |

About twelve years ago my wife had thoracic surgery for the removal of her thymus gland. After that surgery, she lost her voice and it was determined that the surgeon "tweeked" the recurrent larengeal nerve to one side of her vocal cords. It was dead. It changed our lives. We couldn't go to a loud eating place. She couldn't order thru a drive-thru. When I couldn't hear her it hurt to the point that she wouldn't talk.
Eventually, she had another surgery after a year of neuro testing to implant a stint to prop up her vocal cord. It still works. She can't yell. She can't scream (she never did either). But our lives are back to normal and I only hate the first doc occasionally.
Point is, there are things a talented doc can do that boggle the mind. John |

John, this is exactly what has happened to me...some days I cannot speak and I cannot sing...there are several procedures that they are planning to do including the one you describe...prognosis is "if" then 6 to 18 months...the procedures may help with my speaking but time will tell...
I want to say thanks to everyone who has left good thoughts and best wishes...I appreciate them from the bottom of my heart...you are all special to me and I appreciate the good will...
I would like to share the last song I wrote (the week after I had the surgery but before I knew that my voice was perhaps permanently affected) with you all...since I cannot sing it I will just share the lyric's; it was written for my HS Class Reunion which was held three weeks ago...perhaps it might bring back some memories of your classes...Peace to you all...
“Class of ‘70”
Michael D. Ward
02/22/10
I.
We were young and green, some barely 18
Looking “to change the world our way”
It could be cold and mean, and full of unseen
Waiting as we made our play
But with the decade dawning bright
We knew we’d turn out right
Ch.
Oh what a time we shared, years spent learning how to climb life’s stairs;
First cars and dates and Friday night air
The decade was dawning bright; we knew we’d turn out right
II.
The Class of ’70 launched that June
A class of new Duke’s growing up soon
Some got a job; some worked the land
Some went to college; some went to ‘Nam
As we all got caught up in life
We knew we’d turn out right
Ch.
III.
Now and then we’d stop and sigh
When we’d remember those years spent at Gloucester High
Where we cheered on the teams, and shared our delight
As we cruised the Freeze or the single stop light
We took Government, Science, Drama, Shop Class
Most courses I liked; and then there was Math
The decade was dawning bright; we knew we’d turn out right
Ch.
IV.
So the class of ’70 went their own ways
Raising their families and remembering the days
Of sharing with Ihsan and enjoying the fun
While recalling how we just couldn’t wait to get done
Yeah, the decade was dawning bright;
We knew we’d turn out right
Ch.
Bridge:
Those years flew on by: 20, 30, and more
While the world changed some of us to our core
We’ve lost some along the way
But if here I think they’d say:
Ch.
Oh what a time we shared, years spent learning how to climb life’s stairs;
With first cars and dates and Friday night air
The decade was dawning bright; we knew we’d turn out right
The decade was dawning bright; Oh the decade was dawning bright;
Hey the decade was dawning bright; now we know we turned out right!
We turned out right! We turned out right! We turned out right!

:p
On the up side, the body has a way of compensating. This may actually improve your listening. |
