Location: Newington, CT | Long story short...I brought the girls (my daughter and her best friend) trick or treating for Hallowe'en THREE years ago. There was an unlighted sidewalk portion with steps, and I fell. I caught myself with my left (fingering) hand. I'm 6'4" 285 lbs... I haven't felt the same since. Ny left wrist has just hurt...hurts for golf; hurts for guitar playing...two days ago I saw a golfer friend with something on his left wrist. I asked him about it. It's a "wrist brace" from Walmart, says he... $5!!! He told me about it in a golf context, and I was following him in that state-of mind -- golf is a GGRREEAATT game!
However, part of my silly brain was tapping me on the shoulder saying -- "you KNOW how it hurts to play the guitar since you fell"...Bottom line: I bought one: IT WORKS!!! It works for guitar playing!!! I can't wait to try it for golf!
Here're the details:
-----------------------------------------------
Product: Elastic Wrist Support
Manufacturer: Mueller
Size: One size fits all
Retailer: Walmart (in the Pharmacy section)
Enjoy! |

| Friend of mine broke his wrist rollerblading and says its never again been as accurate for playing which is too bad because, even though he only owns one guitar, he has the kind of talent that makes people stop and listen whether he's playing piano, guitar or flute. Gotta be careful I guess o/wise you can lose it. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I have been wearing wrist braces for about 5 years now. Not all the time. I apparently don't have carpal tunnel, but from the amount of computer work, guitar, etc..
I highly recommend trying different ones. I have a couple that seem like they do the same as the others, but are not comfortable and make my wrist hurt more.
The key is immobilization of your wrist for at least a short period of time. Of course you should check with your doctor before taking any advice, but for me getting the "weight" off my wrist for a few hours, where it's locked in one position and relaxed, is enough for any swelling to go away. Much like your neck, even when you are doing nothing, it's still holding up your head. Same with the wrist. Even sitting in a chair or laying in bed, you wrist is supporting your hand and taking stress from your arm. The little metal brace piece that goes along the palm inside the brace, takes all the weight off.
It's been my little miracle cure for the wrist pain I have suffered for at least 7 years. |

It's been my little miracle cure for the wrist pain I have suffered for at least 7 years. Thanks for the elaboration, Miles...one thing about this particular brace: I can wear it and it alleviates the pain WHILE I play...probably by limiting side-to-side wrist movement. However, caveat emptor, I'm NOT sure whether that represents an improvement or a worsening of my technique!
It DOES force me to reach further around the neck, to attack the strings more with the tips of my fingers. THAT forces me to be more precise which is a good thing, I guess. However, I DO use the pads of my fingers, sometmes, to produce a slightly dampened note. Oh, well...no one said getting older would be easy, but it DOES beat the alternative. |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I own wrist braces, an elbow brace, a knee brace, a cervical collar, and a brace for my lower back. When I wear them all at once, I can't move. I guess that's why they make me feel better. If I had known it was going to hurt this badly, I never would've laughed at my parents every time they'd groan when getting out of a chair! |

New Grip Wrist Support
I got a pair and find they help when my wrist is sore because my playing technique is bad.
Yes they also work good for drummers. Not sure if they would help playing the Banjo. :D |

I rarely wear a brace WHEN I'm doing an activity. Mostly only before or after. The idea being to let my wrist really rest when I'm not using it. I sometimes wear it while working on the computer because it provides support on the wrist I use for the trackball, but mostly only wear it for rest. |
